Just noticed the Devils stole Johansson. Makes what we got for Stepan look a lot better.

Wonder if NYR are waiting on the Kovalchuk response before signing. I certainly hope it isn't Klein's retirement decision being up in the air.

The dominoes are moving though. Marleau signs megadeal, Thronton signs, Radulov signs. Next up is Kovalchuk and then there will be no fire power left anywhere and that's when Sakic is planning on making his move to try and rob a team.

I could definitely see that. But I also think his market is drying up for him. Lots of teams are hitting their caps and filling needs. I think the only teams with glaring Center needs are Rangers, Montreal, and uh ... what's kind of it?

also good for depth

Lindberg can also play wing, which is a bonus. Right now we have 12 forwards (Mika and Fast RFA, Nieves is included in this). We can for sure use at least 1-2 veteran signings to fill out the roster or a trade.

For real, Radulov single handedly kept them in that series. Habs look so bad right now. Price having a Hart trophy season is their only chance at the playoffs.

I know nobody wants to hear this...but I firmly believe HENRIK single handedly kept US in that series...

Marc Staal

Has a thought about Staal. If buying him out this year versus next, the difference is $100k per year (not very much) I wonder it Gorton is telling Staal here are 2 options for you:

a) waive you're NTC and I can move you
or
b) we will buy you out

Now I know it makes sense to ask to get bought out since Staal can double dip money wise, but now that the market is sort of set for FA's and most teams are kind of set does that limit who would pay him what?

Just a thought.

His buyout is hell. I wouldn't even threaten that. Find someone who can use the cap space and force him out. If he's not getting any ice time I can't imagine hed complain about being dumped to say... NJD (Ala Johansen). Wouldn't have to uproot his family and could get ice time.

I'm thinking JG will make sure Staal gets sheltered minutes in hopes he ends up with decent Numbers to flip for some sort of pick at the deadline or next season.

No point in buying him out of there isn't an FA to use the cap space on. Keep the depth.

Staal is depth only in the sense that he opens up an abyss to hockey hell for the fans and the team. He will compete for a spot under warrior-veteran-loving Vigneault. All the rookies coming in hot will be punished by Vigneault randomly so Staal will definitely get regular ice time. In November, Girardi was meant to be rested to keep him fresh but ended up playing on the top pairing every single night that he was physically capable despite being seriously handicapped by injuries.

This is the disconnect that just keeps on coming up. Staal wasn't going to waive for Vegas at the ED. Why does he change his mind a couple weeks later?

Yeah I know that's why I put the sarcasm emoji. I freaking wish he would but absolutely makes no sense at all from his end.

There was no need to even ask him to waive at the deadline. Protecting a dman wasn't a concern
