doesn't matter what he thinks, its about what AV thinks.

Not true. If Gorton doesn't think Staal is a top-4 guy and brings in a good top-4 and AV continues to play Staal in the top-4, AV will be unemployed.

I had a moment of weakness after the Stepan trade where I was really pissed. Prior to that I was a staunch supporter of what Gorton was selling. After I calmed down and have looked at everything, I am buying in more now than ever.

It isn't a problem. As others have said, Ruff was hired for a reason (not my first choice but not my last either). I think Gorton realized after the PO's that he and AV may see things a bit differently.

If AV tries that with Staal, I think he gets canned. Gorton made a ton of moves to revamp the defense. He isn't going to stand for AV's BS. This is his team now. Get on the train or get left behind. AV needs to figure out where he wants to be.

Touche my friend. I forgot about that one. Erat didn't have a bad contract but still. That... that is awful.

Good point about Ruff. I forgot about him. If I was AV I would assume that was a shot across my bow, I am now on notice. And I'm sure it's not a big secret in the organization over how guys should be deployed.

You would have to wonder what's going on if the D looks any different than what we expect. Good mix of defense and puck moving ability, the younger guys are with veteran players, everyone is on the appropriate side.

Look at the payday Girardi got. There's no way in hell Staal voluntarily gives that up to help us out. The ONLY things that could compel him to do so, maybe a favorable destination, or a better contender than the Rangers. It's not going to be to join a brother, because they're all pretty movable. He's not going to Toronto, bc they suck and they don't want him. Does a contender get Marc Staal? If they want him, how are they contending?

Staal would get the same salary he gets from the Rangers if he is traded. Players are competitors. Players have egos. There is no way Staal wants to be a healthy scratch all season. If the Rangers ask him to waive he will most likely waive it. Girardi was bought out. He did not want that to happen.

What management thinks especially in the offseason matters a lot. First off the decision this summer is up to management not AV just like with Stepan. Secondly AV only has a job as long as management wants him to have a job. While they will usually let the coach do his thing once the season starts there are plenty of exceptions. Bringing back Avery and Zooks was all Slats in my opinion. I do not think Torts wanted either guy.

Why would you waive if you knew you could get a buyout and another contract on top?

AV doesn't have his pets anymore. Girardi is gone. Glass is gone. No more guys like Pyatt. Gorton knows what kind of roster you need to win at the NHL level. No more usless plugs. You want good locker room guys? They need to be able to produce as well.

This team is going to be much different. Gone are the days of the Ranger nice guys. We have some real nastiness on the back end with Smith and Bear gloves. I feel like Miller will be a real **** stirrer this season along with DeAngelo. I think Gorton realizes that the days of needing toughness are long gone. Guys who chirp and agitate are the new version of them. Almost like an on-ice troll if you will. As long as DeAngelo keeps it together, I think he can do a FINE job of this.

I feel like this team is going to be so much fun to watch and other teams are going to hate playing against them so much, by the end of the season the Rangers will be the unanimously most hated team by all fans and I would love every second of it.

I have been a big Gorton supporter in general, so again I hope you're right. I do like how this team is transitioning to a feisty but still fast group. Sort of like the Bruins teams he was a part of except they can skate. It's why I'm more inclined to believe that guys like Kreider, Zuc, and Miller aren't going anywhere while I think Hayes would be a trade chip if his value ever goes up.

The offseason is not AV's time to make decisions. AV is in charge of the guys on the ice. If AV was in charge of player personal in this offseason I'm pretty convinced Stepan would still be here. The player moves made in the offseason are determined by management.

What makes you believe the FO wants to move Staal? They didn't ask him to waive before or after expansion.

I think the way Staal is valued inside the organization is far different from how he's valued by HF posters; whether right or wrong.

He's going to be in the lineup 10/5, barring injury to him, or I'd be absolutely shocked.

Staal is locked up making millions. Not everyone hates the idea of not having to work for a paycheck.

If he wants to sit in a press box making millions for a couple years and then we buy him out when the term and hit is more bearable that's fine with me. I suspect his pride wouldn't let him do that but I could be wrong. Our cap situation is reasonable at the moment even with him on the books.

I just don't want to see him on the ice.

Devils really shouldn't be worrying about trading Kovy to us aside from rival pride reasons. His time here would not have any effect on them lmao they won't be competing in the metro for at least a couple of seasons.

Why would you waive if you knew you could get a buyout and another contract on top?

1. We never even offer a buyout. We either make him the 8th dman in the press box or a trade.

2. Would he rather get paid 4-5 mill a year salary or 1.266 mill a year in a buyout?

3. There is no guarantee another team will pay him what Girardi got.

4. If he is lucky to get a deal it probably would be for 2 years not 4 years.

I do not know for sure but Gorton saying he is not viewed as a top 4 combined with a logjam on defense especially on the left side plus Staals contract leads me to believe they are considering things.

We didn't ask Girardi to waive before we cut him. We did not protect Ranta in the draft before trading him. These are calculated risks. We did not have Shatty or DeAngelo nor Smith before the expansion draft so it would have been way premature to ask Staal to waive his NTC.

What do you even trade for kovalchucks rights? its like trading to get the boogie man...

Then even past that how the hell do you determine what hes worth salary wise??

Who knows, but I know he's said in the past that he wants to play here. Maybe he'd take a Shattenkirk-like discount lol.
