Anaheim wanted Marleau. They were reportedly very disappointed Marleau went to Toronto. Eric Stephens is the Ducks beat writer for the Orange County Register. He said the Ducks have a backup plan. They have Getzlaf and Kesler signed long term. They played Rakell played on the wing sometimes last season. He can play in the middle. He is a natural center. The Ducks were reportedly interested in Kreider and Miller when they were discussing trades last fall. Cam Fowler's name came up and the Ducks wanted a top 6 winger. Would Anaheim swap Rakell to the Rangers for either Kreider or Miller? The Rangers get a young righty center signed long term at a very good number. The Ducks get a top six winger. I would give them Kreider. Miller and Rakell played together in junior at Plymouth for one year.

Why not Nash with a sweetener back? Or give them Vesey and a prospect from us then.

The GM sits him down. Points to the 4-5 other LH Dmen on the roster. Says we can have you sit in the press box if you like but baring injury it is unlikely you will play this season. Would you like for us to try to trade you to another city. We can't play him just because he has a contract. The other guys are better than he is at this time.

Okey, but he's still on the roster, does Gorton force AV not to play him? AV will want to play him. AV wanted Girardi, Gorton didn't force him not to play him. AV wanted Glass, Gorton brought him up.

I see your point in theory, but AV is the coach and he obviously likes Staal, so i think ur point is moot.

As much as I don't like RNH, if Gorton could somehow work a Staal+ for RNH trade, it would be the best offseason by a GM in history

I don't like RNH either but a move like that would be what legends are made of. Stepan + Raanta + Staal --> Andersson + DeAngelo + Shattenkirk + RNH (minus Girardi) :amazed:

I don't think he would either. Rangers might not have a choice but to just buy out his contract next summer.

Saw a breakdown though, we don't really save much money by waiting till next year. Like $100k each season if we wait till next year.

Better to do it this year, no?

Staal for Duchene :sarcasm:

Could you imagine?

Sakic "Not getting serious offers for Duchene, let me try the Rangers". "Hey Jeff, you guys need a C now that the Stepan fella is in Arizona?

Gorton "Yeah Joe but I'm not giving you Skjei or McDonagh so don't even ask"

Sakic "I figured. I'll settle for Marc Staal and a 2nd though"

Gorton ".... (he can't be serious, is he high? Drunk? Both? He does run a team in COLORADO...) Let me see if Marc wants to waive"

Sakic puts the phone on mute and looks at his team "Can you believe this? Hes going to give me Staal + a 2nd for Duchene! Staal is a top pairing defenseman. Their family has great hockey players. Hooray"

Gorton "Joe, Marc is on his way to the airport and booked on the next flight out".

Sakic: Ha, I really got him good. Thinking I'd want those kiddies who don't know the game. I got myself a real gamer who plays with grit and jam.

AV has done nothing to indicate that he believes Skjei or Smith are better options than Staal. In fact, he's done the opposite.

That's the problem.

If him and Gorton tell Staal that barring a performance improvement he's the 7th defenseman Staal will waive. But whether by delusion, blind loyalty, or some other unknown reason he continues to get heavy minutes and usage in critical situations. Why would he waive if he's getting 20 mins a night?

Why wouldn't he waive for anywhere? Can't see him wanting to stay that badly if we're actively trying to trade him. Obviously maybe not a team like Vegas but I'm sure he would waive for a more attractive option.

If he is told he will not play he will waive and try to have a say in his destination in my opinion.

The same could have been said about Girardi. If management tells him that he will not play he will likely waive.

Look at the payday Girardi got. There's no way in hell Staal voluntarily gives that up to help us out. The ONLY things that could compel him to do so, maybe a favorable destination, or a better contender than the Rangers. It's not going to be to join a brother, because they're all pretty movable. He's not going to Toronto, bc they suck and they don't want him. Does a contender get Marc Staal? If they want him, how are they contending?

Its pure fantasy as it would be the worst trade in the post 2004 lock out era. We can hope though!

Erat for Forsberg. It was terrible at the time and now, it's just mind numbing.

Nothing will top this for a loooong while

It isn't a problem. As others have said, Ruff was hired for a reason (not my first choice but not my last either). I think Gorton realized after the PO's that he and AV may see things a bit differently.

If AV tries that with Staal, I think he gets canned. Gorton made a ton of moves to revamp the defense. He isn't going to stand for AV's BS. This is his team now. Get on the train or get left behind. AV needs to figure out where he wants to be.

Touche my friend. I forgot about that one. Erat didn't have a bad contract but still. That... that is awful.

I hope you're right, i just gave up on believing AV will see the light when I saw Tanner Glass on the ice in the final 2 minutes of a playoff game after playing like 2 mins of regular season hockey with us and benching our best defense pair several times in the game.

AV doesn't have his pets anymore. Girardi is gone. Glass is gone. No more guys like Pyatt. Gorton knows what kind of roster you need to win at the NHL level. No more usless plugs. You want good locker room guys? They need to be able to produce as well.

This team is going to be much different. Gone are the days of the Ranger nice guys. We have some real nastiness on the back end with Smith and Bear gloves. I feel like Miller will be a real **** stirrer this season along with DeAngelo. I think Gorton realizes that the days of needing toughness are long gone. Guys who chirp and agitate are the new version of them. Almost like an on-ice troll if you will. As long as DeAngelo keeps it together, I think he can do a FINE job of this.

I feel like this team is going to be so much fun to watch and other teams are going to hate playing against them so much, by the end of the season the Rangers will be the unanimously most hated team by all fans and I would love every second of it.

Gorton somewhat made it clear they don't think Staal is a top 4 option anymore when they had the Shattenkirk conference call

The offseason is not AV's time to make decisions. AV is in charge of the guys on the ice. If AV was in charge of player personal in this offseason I'm pretty convinced Stepan would still be here. The player moves made in the offseason are determined by management.
