But aren't most of the guys going to be signed by that time? at least the guys of consequence? Assume Zib gets $5m and Fast gets $1.5. That's $52m with this lineup:

Kreider-Zib-Buch
_____-_____-MZA
Fast-______-______
_____-______-______

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
______-Smith
Bereglazov-DeAngelo
Staal

Hank
_____

I would assume some of those lower-line guys will be low-dollar shorter term or kids coming up.

Vesey
Hayes
Miller
Skjei

Cap is at $75m (do you see this going up next year? I would assume it will due to expansion team new income?)

So add Kovlachuk for 3 years @ $6m and the line-up is:

Kreider-Zib-Buch
Kovalchuk-_____-MZA
Fast-______-______
_____-______-______

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
______-Smith
Bereglazov-DeAngelo
Staal

Hank
______

That's $58m

Miller - ~$4-4.5m
Hayes - $3.5-4.5m
Skjei - $4.m-5.0m
Vesey - $2.5-$3.0m

That's another $18m if we take the high end ranges which would put the team at $76m
- Assuming they don't buy out or dump Staal

if they move Staal and bridge either Hayes or Miller it's possible. I see your point though as it will be tight

They would be at the 76m with 3 forward spots and a back up goalie that they still need to fill.

Even if you move out one of the guys due for a raise next year instead of paying up, you'd have a bit more space but 4 slots (plus goalie) to fill.

They won't be able to move Staal unless they take an equally terrible contract back. He's destined for LTIR, but you can't really rely on that being your out clause.

Kovalchuk won't fit here. Not at that salary.

Rangers could get a team to take Staal (especially if they retain 50%), that means he would be around 2.8M per for him.. The bigger question becomes is he willing to waive the NMC

Staal <clap> won't <clap> waive <clap> ever <clap> for <clap> anywhere

Why wouldn't he waive for anywhere? Can't see him wanting to stay that badly if we're actively trying to trade him. Obviously maybe not a team like Vegas but I'm sure he would waive for a more attractive option.

Staal has no real incentive to waive his NMC though. He's completely rooted here and he has the trust of his coach, why would he waive?

I don't think he would either. Rangers might not have a choice but to just buy out his contract next summer.

If he is told he will not play he will waive and try to have a say in his destination in my opinion.

The same could have been said about Girardi. If management tells him that he will not play he will likely waive.

Bergevin is a Bottom 5 GM

That little "no bb come back" thing is proof.

I think bottom 5 is pushing it. He made some great moves over his career.

Tbh, I'm not sure how Montreal hasn't been a bottom 5 team at least once during his tenure. Their roster always seems to have gaping holes (which I guess you can put blame on MB)

Issue is, who tells him he's not playing? He can't be sent down to the AHL and he has the trust of the coach, AV will play Staal as he played Girardi.

The GM sits him down. Points to the 4-5 other LH Dmen on the roster. Says we can have you sit in the press box if you like but baring injury it is unlikely you will play this season. Would you like for us to try to trade you to another city. We can't play him just because he has a contract. The other guys are better than he is at this time.

AV has done nothing to indicate that he believes Skjei or Smith are better options than Staal. In fact, he's done the opposite.
