The Patrick Marleau signing is horrendous. I thought that franchise was changing. Just awful.

I can understand it for the next 2 years. They have their 3 young studs all on ELCs and have a window to try and contend before they're going to have to shell out ~20-25M a year for Matthews/Marner/Nylander.

The 3rd year is the problem though. That 6.25M hit is on the cap unless he's traded but he has a NMC.

They added a top 6 forward who can still skate and score, and all it cost them was $ which they have right now. Guess they'll deal with Y3 when it gets there.

Nieves has his size, and some speed, and that is about it

He is average to below average at everything else. Hopefully he can stay concussion free this year

Strictly looking at it from a contract perspective, yes. But from a team and player fit perspective, I think it makes a lot of sense for Toronto. He'll fit in very well with that team, IMO. That third year is a killer, though.

The thing is, as you said, they aren't at their window, so why even do it?

He's going to be 38 mid season on a completely new franchise.

I'm sure people will use the "he will rub off on the young ones", but I've found that to be just a bunch of crap in general. Just because someone is old, doesn't mean they want to teach or that they are a good teacher, or that the other other millionaires on the team give a flying **** what he thinks.

It's not a pee-wee travel team summer camp.

"Wow guys! It's rapidly fading star Patrick Marleau who never won a cup! I hope I can be big and strong like him when I grow up. I better keep drinking my milk."

It's probably a market based think since it's Toronto, but it's smells in a team sense.

Totally Maple Laughs material I thought they were getting away from.

How does he fit so well?

He seems to fit the old Toronto mold fantastically by over paying for old stars, and this is the oldest they've bought.

I mean he's going to be starting on a completely new team, with a completely different play style at 37 with a $6 million dollar contract for 3 years with a NMC.

He could very well be an albatross by year 2 at best.

Marleau is still a fantastic skater, and the Leafs game is built largely on speed and pressure, an aspect of the game which Marleau is very effective in. He should also make an already fantastic PP even more dangerous, as he's still a threat in that area as well. He also adds much need experience and leadership on top of that. Not to mention that he'll most likely play on a line with Matthews, and is certainly an upgrade over Zach Hyman (who I like, but he's certainly not anything close to a top line forward).

I don't disagree with you at all that the contract is bad, just to be clear. I just think he'll do well with that team, bad contract or not.

Don't be like that. the return of Messier did wonders for Malholtra's career :naughty:

What is Jokinen looking for as a 3rd line center?..

Not sure. His production ha fallen a bit. Off year or starting to age?

Coming off a buyout, he may be willing to take a bit less money to play for a contender on a 1-year deal, but he could also be looking for the last payday.

I'd guess somewhere in the middle of all that...around $2.5 per...maybe 2 or 3 years? :dunno:

Was he more of a wing in FLA?

Louie Louie

Buyout Marc Staal (if nobody bites trading him with some $ retained)
Trade JT Miller, Nick Holden, Ryan Graves and maybe a pick to Toronto for JVR and Leo Komarov (I would prefer Kadri or Bozak but do not think Toronto does that)
Sign Mikhail Grigorenko on a two year deal
Sign Klingberg as a depth UFA signing on a $1.025.000 deal (meaning he can be waived without cap implications)
Sign Will Butcher as a UFA NCAA defenseman
See what Vladimir Tkachev (invitee) and Lias Andersson can do in camp

Kreider - Zib - Buch
Nash - Komarov - Zucc
Vesey - Hayes - JVR
Grabner - Grigorenko/Andersson/Nieves - Klingberg/Jensen/Tkachev (until Fast returns)

McD - Shatty
Skjei - Smith
Bear Gloves - ADA
Kampfer/Pionk/Day

Hank
Ondrej

If all fails we have plenty of enticing pieces to deal at the TDL (Nash, Komarov, JVR and Grabner) loading up for next years draft

A few things. As some have already said, Johansson is a winger, not a C.

On a 1 year deal, 8 million for Thornton is fine. The Marleau deal actually isn't bad either. Should have been 2 years not 3 though.

The really bad deals were Fowler and Price. Yikes  .

Caps are so screwed. So, so screwed.

The market took another step this season. We had the circumvention deals. Then a year or two the market didn't quite adjust. Suter, Parise and co still makes a lot more then the deals signed a year ago. Now the market rebounded and caught up.

This affects things, in light of for example the recent deals, Rads ask of 6x6 is pretty reasonable.

Any thoughts about signing Jagr on the cheap (less than 3Mill AAV 2years max) and have him play in a limited role?

Have there been any rumors of a Staal for Bjugstad trade? Not sure if the value is exactly equal (Staal more $) but Florida needs a LHD and we need a center, so...

While Jagr would certainly be good value, I worry how he fits into AV's up tempo system. There has been a clear direction towards fast and deliberate style of play.

I'd throw a flyer out to Stephan Da Costa. He's had some success in the KHL. RH center. 27 years old. Maybe he comes over for a nice 2-year deal.

I'd also sign Jokinen but I'd stay at 1 year.

Sign John Mitchell as a 4th line backup C

Montreal and Boston need a lefty D. Will a team take on the 4 years on Staal's contract? Girardi had 3 years remaining. Tampa gave him two years. If the Rangers discussed retaining 50% of the money, that third year is an issue. Staal will get a 2 year contract as a free agent. Maybe 3 years. Not that many good D out there. Girardi had multiple offers. The Red Wings were interested.

I'd take Plekanec back for Staal at 50

Just eat the 6 this yr then Plekanec ufa

Anaheim wanted Marleau. They were reportedly very disappointed Marleau went to Toronto. Eric Stephens is the Ducks beat writer for the Orange County Register. He said the Ducks have a backup plan. They have Getzlaf and Kesler signed long term. They played Rakell played on the wing sometimes last season. He can play in the middle. He is a natural center. The Ducks were reportedly interested in Kreider and Miller when they were discussing trades last fall. Cam Fowler's name came up and the Ducks wanted a top 6 winger. Would Anaheim swap Rakell to the Rangers for either Kreider or Miller? The Rangers get a young righty center signed long term at a very good number. The Ducks get a top six winger. I would give them Kreider. Miller and Rakell played together in junior at Plymouth for one year.
