$8m for Thornton is kind of nuts but they have the space this year and still have about $10m in space to round out there roster.
Even for Toronto I don't think they'll be in huge cap trouble until the last year of the Marleau deal when Marner and Matthews need a raise. They'll likely get ride of 1 of JVR or Bozak (or Kadri) before then, but they should be ok

If the Leafs even have thoughts about moving Kadri, JG should be all over that.

Caps in salary cap hell and desparately need another defenseman. What about one year of Lars eller for nick Holden?

9m in cap space with 8F, 5D and 1G signed.

Burakovsky and Grubauer still RFA. Man, I would love to take Burakovsky off their hands. They can't afford him

I agree that Holden will be involved in a trade for a center if he is traded this offseason. If not, trade him for a draft pick and we'll use that to figure out our center situation.

I say we should just wait it out though. I really like how this team is built (outside of needing a center). Anderson seems capable of coming in and making the team. He's pretty close to being NHL ready and might be able to take the 4C spot and maybe move up to 3C as the season goes along. As stated, Pittsburgh and Washington have lost some depth and now our D core is much stronger.

I don't see any UFAs that are worth it right now as anything more than a 4C. There are many intriguing RFAs, but I don't see any that won't be signed by their current teams (well, at least the guys we'd be interested in)

Duchene is a long shot but the longer Sakic waits, the better our chances are of fleecing them. Besides, there is always the outside chance Sakic could be fired. Again this is unlikely, but the longer they wait the more desperate they might get to unload him, especially if things are ugly to start the season.

Most likely, the best option as stated would be to play this season out, and then wait for the deadline to approach and make our move for a center then. A lot can change over the course of an NHL season, and you never know who might end up available. It also will give time for our prospects to develop further and maybe increase their trade value by this point.

Our team right now is much stronger than last year's team, let's see how things go and then make our move.

Ok, we need to work over the leafs. They are now $1m and change over the cap with hyman and brown needing deals. They have big holes on d.

I don't know how, but I forgot marner can play center. Matthews, nylander, marner, kadri, bozak and Moore.

Yeah, they could trade captain jvr and pay for the 2 rfa's hyman and brown. But that $4m+ for kadri and bozak each might go to matthews alone. The lupul money can go to Nylander. Plus kapanen in 2 seasons, shoshnikov has 1 year left.

Zuccarello and Holden for kadri and fehr. Close to even cap, fix the 3rd pair, money that is gone in 2 and 1 years respectively.

Very good players are going for pennies to fix the cap.

Lars Eller is a 4th line center who makes 3.5M why would we possibly want to trade for him?

It's 1 season, helps us out on the PK and is a very, very solid 4th line player. We might even get a pick with it since it's a clear cap-dump by the Caps to get under the cap. They need to sign 5 forwards, a D and a G with 9m in cap space. That's not going to end well without shedding some cap

Expiring contract at a position of need

Except that we can just sign someone in FA who is just as good, if not better, for a similar or cheaper contract. Or trade for someone else. Not a 3.5M 4th line center.

Some names being Desharnais, Winnik, Grigorenko, Jokinen, Nestrasil

Trading Zucc for a center doesn't help, just moves the problem. Zucc is not the guy to move anyway.

We are deep at wing. That isn't a problem.

Vanek is sitting waiting for a deal. So many wings are waiting to sign. It will sting to lose zuccarello but it will hurt way more not having enough centers.

No. This is the thinking that got them in trouble in 15-16. They need to be better than fine.

I don't disagree that we could add some NHL depth up front capable of playing the PK. I expect Hayes and Miller to get more PK time this season, though. AV was certainly trying to groom them for that tole.

I think Miller + could potentially bring back a 2C.. I dont know who tho.?
