They need defense badly. Staal + Holden for Backstrom seems perfect. Caps had trouble defending a lead with 2 minutes to go. That pairing has a lot of experience with those situations

Lmao. If we could pull that off I'd be so happy. Backstrom is the most underrated 1C in the league.

Smith+ Deangelo for Backstrom?

Yeah, but we all know they dont trade him to us for that.. NJ is same division, but they're not close to a contender yet.

I'd have paid more than two mid-round picks for MaJo.

Or maybe Caps should've dealt him outside the division?

I don't know. Consider me confused, and consider me as a person who will never understand how some GMs operate.

Where are all these young defenseman playing this year?..

Mcdonagh - signed for 2 more years
Shattenkirk - 4 years
Skjei - not going anywhere
Smith - 4 years
Staal - NMC
Deangelo - ELC
Bereglazov - can return to Russia if not in the NHL..
Holden - signed

Gotta imagine Holden is dealt for a pick. Someone will take him on as he plays both sides, is signed for 1 year, and makes really nothing substantial. Can't see the Rangers letting Bereglazov go back to the KHL if they're that high on him.

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo
Bereglazov

Don't see them dealing Staal as there's no immediate need for cap space. They'll ride it out the year until the NMC becomes a limited NTC. Bereglazov will be the 7th but he'll get in his fair share of games I'm sure as injuries pop up. Good problem to have to have this many defensemen.

I think gorton intended for Deangelo to be that right handed defenseman for the Rangers, I dont think they thought Shattenkirk would take such a discount to come here.. Does that change things? Deangelo is on an ELC sure, but I can't see him playing top 4 in the near future now that we re signed Smith AND signed Shattenkirk, the top 4 is set for next 2 years at least, and now they probably extend Mcdonagh (whether smart of not is debatable).

Johansson is a winger, not a center. I know he has played center at points, but I'd say he's 90% wing, 10% center.

He's a good player, but I wouldn't be comfortable with him as a top-6 C. And we certainly don't need to add more wingers.

Don't see why we can't bring him along slowly, he's 21. Not to mention that Smith would work perfectly fine on the third pairing.

I don't think they need him to play top 4.

Plus if AV ever wises up these guys are all interchangeable. Don't feel comfortable with Shattenkirk defending a lead with a minute left? Bump Smith up with McDonagh. Need a goal late in the game? Move DeAngelo up with Skjei.

He'll get his time on the PP and a RH puck rushing defenseman is always going to hold value. I really hope he wises up because he can bring tremendous value to this team, even in a bottom pairing role.

What the **** is going on? Did the salary cap go up to 110m and nobody told Gorton? What's up with all these ridiculous deals?

Also having both Shatty and Deangelo is huge for this franchise. Shattenkirk can mentor Deangelo and help him round out his game

No it doesn't change anything. He's the Rangers best defensive prospect. It's not really close. If he forces his way into the top-4 that's a great problem to have. Deal with it then.

Anyway, any other Caps forwards that might be available? Burakovsky maybe? I'd be happy to send a prospect and a pick to DC for him.
