For years I scoffed at the idea that Ranger fans couldn't handle a rebuild and thought it was a crutch used by ownership.

Now I find myself in a world where ownership seems more capable of handling a rebuild than Rangers fans.

Talk about one of life's surprises.
Again I think most of the ppl advocating trading for him are doing so by suggesting trading roster pieces..not young players or picks. It also needs to be said that Ottawa is gonna HAVE to take back some salary to hit the cap floor

Getting rid of like Hayes and Skjei in an EK deal has about the same net effect as bringing in a James Van Riemsdyk: it probably makes us a playoff bubble team. That...kinda sucks

Karlsson at 10-11 million >>>>>>>> injury prone Trouba at 8 million.

I doubt Trouba gets $8m. Probably mid $6m. He also fits the age dynamic better and gives the Rangers another shutdown option. They've also been rumored to have asked about him before.

That being said, the injuries are a huge red flag for sure. Maybe he could be a flippable piece though?

I think a lot of people are missing the point in the sense that if the Rangers trade for EK today, they're not trying to compete starting three years from now. The window reopens and they're trying to compete today.

Trading for EK blows up the rebuild, it doesn't complement it.
I think it massively accelerates it. Is it so hard to believe that if we made this deal for some of the packages on here (aka no Chytil/Andersson) that in the ‘19/‘20 season we can compete? That way it gives the kids another year of seasoning.

Assuming Hayes/Spooner/Skjei/Hajek go in the EK deal...below is for the ‘19/‘20 playoff run. This is a deep team if the kids are ready.

CK - Zib - Buch
Andersson - Chytil - Zucc
Ryan - Howden - XXX
Vesey - Names - Fast

De Haan - EK
Staal - Shatty
Lindgren - Poink

+ maybe Smith rebounds?
+ maybe ADA has a great season?
+ maybe Kravtsov comes up after some AHL time?
+ maybe Ryan scores 20 goals?

I do think there's been unexpected wrinkle. The truly sadistic Ranger fan are drooling at the prospect of getting Karlsson for a pittance in light of the Islanders losing Tavares.

I think we started that way...and then we started drifted into including those players when we realized there's very little reason for Ottawa to make the trades we were proposing.

It's going to take prospects, younger players and/or picks.

All teams have those, some more than others. Likewise, some teams are better positioned to move said prospects and reap the immediate rewards.

We have the prospects, picks, younger players to make deal. Of that I have no doubt.

But that cost is going to be high. When push comes to shove, I don't think the Rangers are willing to pay it.

And if it does come down, that means it also comes down for other teams as well. In which case, we're right back in the reality that we're not going to be able to hand-off a bunch of expendables for EK.

My dream would be to get Parayko out of STL, but I see absolutely zero reason why they’d move him.

I’m gonna stick to Dumba and Trouba as two guys that I think we’d target.

Larry Brooks was the first hockey writer to report Tavares was going through the interview process when there was speculation about Tavares re-signing with the Islanders during the weekend of the draft in Dallas. The Rangers weren’t involved with Tavares and the Islanders are a very secretive organization. Even worse now with Lamoriello in change. Don’t assume LB got his Karlsson information from the Rangers or Islanders.

If he is at mid 6's, maybe. I think he comes in higher than some expect.

Or Larry knows the assumption is that the Rangers were going to go hard for EK, and with no other news to report, here we are.

Or EKs agent or OTT called NYR, and Larry got his info from his inside source: "[blank] called and tried to sell us Karlsson...we're not interested"

Brooks tweet never said NYR was involved.

What is the current estimated cap space is we try to sign all RFAs to deals, assuming Skjei and Hayes have a good shot at a longer slightly bigger AAV deal?

If EK's ankle was 100%, I'd say go for it, but the cost would be insane. How long until it explodes and he's LTIR? We're in a rebuild. PASS!

Get Panarin before he hits FA. Use Hayes plus to get him now

Too expensive for a rebuilding team. Imagine if we traded away Hayes, top prospect, and a 2nd round pick and then Panarin decides, oh, taxes are way lower in FLA and the sun is way better in LA and walks.

I'm not good at this, but we have almost $24M in cap space with 16 players signed.

However, 7 of those are D, and include the likes of Claesson, Kampfer, DeAngelo, and Smith, two of which will probably be in Hartford.

That will probably bump up the real cap space to around $25M.

If we gave Skjei the same contract we gave McDonagh in 13/14, that would be $5.8M today. McDonagh had proven more, so maybe $5M long-term for Skjei?

Hayes would probably reach a similar number. Maybe $4.75M on a longer-term deal.

Spooner is looking at a decent raise. Maybe $4M?

Vesey, I would guess 3 years, $2M per.

By my crappy calculations, that leaves us with $9.25M with 11F and 6D signed. All of our youngsters carry about a $1M cap hit, so if Andersson or Chytil makes the big club, subtract that amount.

Feel free to rip apart my numbers. I'm admittedly not an encyclopedia of contract knowledge like RangerBoy is.
