Thompson is much better than Lindgren as a prospect
Spooner was also much better at the time of the trade than Berglund and Berglund is pretty much almost a cap dump
When did we get a 3rd back in the Nash trade? That was Holden right?
Sabres got absolutely robbed though although I really like Thompson. He was dominant that one game near the end of the year against us
You're right, the other pick (3rd) came from the Holden trade

I also think Thompson is a very mediocre prospect, and considering our system I would even go so far as to say I would prefer having Lindgren

Thompson with 2 points in 16 AHL games and then 27 points in 71 pro games last year (30 in AHL)
Thompson would be fighting to be in our Top 10 prospects

Does anyone else think that’s A TON for ROR? What is Hayes worth?

Two 30 year old players who are basically cap dumps. Thompson, who is a decent prospect, but certainly not the best St. Louis had to offer. A 1st round pick next year that will likely be in the latter half of the round, and a 2nd round pick 3 years from now.

Honestly, I think Buffalo got bent over.

Jack f***ing Johnson f*** off. 5 years at $3.25 mil per! WTF! He's 31 and it's been at least 5 years since he had a good season. Maybe the Penguins will get a couple good years out of him. They get more mileage out of players simply because of Crosby and Malkin.......but I can't see them not regretting this within a couple/three years and maybe even sooner.

I'm with Torts on this one and the comment that Johnson made on leaving is pathetic and classless. He didn't have a problem cashing their checks.

Sort of agree. There is a lot that needs to right for the team to reach back contender status it was 3 or so years ago. I don't really see it happening with our current pool of prospects/players atm and I'm still unsure what Gorton's long term plans are.

At least we'll have more character moving forward.

A top 5 forward from our pick next year, maybe a haul from a Hayes or Zib trade, a Staal buyout, and the cap space to chase Panarin, Seguin and/or Karlsson will have us right in the thick of things.

I'm surprised there was organizational mandate to unload ROR before his $7,500,000 bonus kicked in. I guess even for rich billionaire owners, paying someone the equivilent of 6,500,000 $1 McChicken plus tax right before they cut him is a bitter pill to swallow. Even the dedicated owners are looking to save whereas Montreal, Toronto, and NYR just doesn't give a heck.

Berglund and Sobotka are serviceable, but taking their cap hits is part of why Buffalo got a 1st, a 2nd and Thompson. Not sure why NYI wouldn’t match. Maybe buffalo willing to take less to get him out of the conference. Maybe NYI not willing to pay the bonus.

Keeping Kostin, Thomas, and Kyrou is huge for St Louis. Thompson is okay but totally expendable for them. The rest is cap dumps or hopes and dreams.

Buffalo got hosed, IMO.

What the hell goes on behind the scenes with Rhino that he's gotten dealt for two shit packages now? At least Zadorov is finally rounding into form for Colorado, but how does Buffalo eat all of that cap and not get back one of Kostin, Thomas, or Kyrou? I like Thompson, but that's a brutal trade for a dude like ROR who gets the hardest usage in the league and still performs while dealing with abysmal linemates.

For what tho? A defensive top 6 center who probably didn’t want to be there anymore and has a history of causing problems

Don't forget they don't have to pay ROR $7.5m at midnight tonight now.

Feel like that's a major point that is getting glossed over.

I think O Reilly still has a lot of term left while sobotka has like 2 yrs and berglund 4

It’s not horrible for buffalo w the former 1st Thompson , a 1st and a 2nd

Reminds me of the Nash rangers Columbus deal though

Well he supposedly wanted to be moved which hurts his value, but beyond that? Not a clue. I just think Botteril made a bad trade here.

I think it comes down to the serviceable thing you mentioned. BUF had too many tweeners that are, to quote Eichel, "happy to be in the NHL". Two grizzly veterans will help that.

He didn't want to be there, pulled the same stuff in Colorado.

STL has some depth, but the goaltending is questionable imo. Still though, he should fit in very nicely with the Blues who don't really have a no 1 center.

In some ways Rhino Riley is the closest they've gotten to one in years.

They've got a really good forward prospect pool, and they'll play this year imo. That forward depth is going to pose a lot of mismatches.

Instead they have to pay Sobokta and Berglund $7.35 million in salary over the course of the season.

So what is the difference really

Yes. The whole thing was they wanted to clear him before the SB kicked in. I think STL knew that Botterill's hands were tied by an imaginary midnight deadline.
Well, then that's a pretty bad move by Botterill. Eat the money that you're gonna make back on Dahlin and Josh Allen jersey sales and go for the better value in a trade. :dunno:
