Are all the "experts" getting wood over the Oilers off season thus far? Until they prove otherwise on the ice, they are still ****ty.

Pete Chiarelli and Todd Mcllelan are going to change that team. It was about time they changed the front office around. Won't be the same Edmonton team.

It's not even if McKeown or the pick turn into NHL players, because prospects and picks are always gambles. No individual prospect or pick has that much value, since they're unknown. Thus, it's easy to say, "It's just a pick," "Prospects are just crap-shoots," that sort of thing.

That misses the point though; you have to keep a steady stream of prospects moving through your organization, and you want to be picking as high as you can in order to assure overall quality. So, no one pick is worth much, but you can't dump your top picks year after year, at least not without jeopardizing the medium-term future of the club. And, while dealing those picks for current players makes sense to a degree--full credit to Lombardi for Gaborik, and several other very shrewd trades--if you're getting players that either only play with you a bit (Sekera) or aren't really addressing your central needs (Lucic), then you're just burning through assets without much return.

That's my problem with the whole string of trades we've made. High-risk/high-reward moves are fine, and necessary in certain situations, but that doesn't mean you throw ALL caution to the wind and dump substantial assets for very marginal returns. Particularly when Lombardi, contrary to popular belief, doesn't really have an exceptional draft record. Nor do we have a well-stocked prospect pipeline right now. There are a few interesting players who may contribute, but very little top-end talent. I'd be much more okay with all this if it looked to me like we were genuinely improving the team on the ice after last season, but that's not obvious at all. Lucic helps us in one area, but not in the area we most need it.

Of course there will be little top end talent, the Kings aren't picking high anymore, and 13 doesn't really count as high. They lucked out when Kopitar fell to 11.

Drafted Simmonds. Traded Simmonds. Oh no! Drafts Fasching. Trades Fasching. Oh no! Drafts McKeown, trades him. Drafts Miller, trades him. So Lombardi and co. are finding prospects all the time. They don't get just one shot at it. As easy as it is to say it's just a prospect or a pick, it's also easy to get enamored with a prospect or a pick. Just because it's a 1st rounder doesn't guarantee anything.

And every team is going to have a hole or weakness somewhere. It's the teams that can best adapt to the ones they have that win. Only time tells on that one.

Backup goaltending market is also drying up. Kings couldn't afford to give Greiss $1.5M? Ok... Let's go with Berube then!

Was reading that Greiss chose the Isles over the Kings. Probably more possible playing time on Isles with Halak's injury history.

Kessel to the Penguins. May not be enough to get them the cup, but will be exciting to see him play with Crosby or Malkin.

Still can't get over the NMC. I get it, it happens, but so glad DL doesn't do those. NMC mean you get to take your foot off the gas when it gets tough... a la Toronto.

So Kessel to Pittsburgh. Should be interesting to watch.

I'm going to see that Yelp pop-up ad in my dreams tonight. I must see it every single minute I'm checking these boards.

Z Michalek back to Arizona. What did St Louis give up for him again? Makes me feel a little better about losing Sekera.

Also, there goes another defenseman.

No their not. THe whole complexion of the team changed when the front office did.
Chiarelli is a good fit there and is showing it. THey neede to upgrade in goal and D and they've done that
They have a good coach in place and will be a much more difficult team to play against.

Two awesome things about to happen:

1. Toronto fans **** themselves over not getting Crosby or Malkin in return.

2. Kessel is suddenly going to look to Toronto fans a whole lot like the rest of the league has seen him: overrated and lazy.

Oh, I wish there was a live stream to watch both these things happen...

I would PPV the crap out of a live feed showing Toronto fans reactions to the Kessel return.
