GDT: Free Agent Frenzy--9am PST, 7/1/15

we can't afford anything that big right now because of the MR situation

if we end up with his contract on the books again or having to buyout, we're absolutely ****ed if we have another 5mil+ 5 year contract on the books

again, not gonna see anything big today
and the Kings continue to be in cap hell twilight zone like all season long. It really has been a fascinating year.

I think it's about differences in what Lombardi and Sutter see as the team's weaknesses. They clearly do not see the defense as a major issue, or they'd be putting resources like money, picks, and prospects into solving it. They must be happy going forward.

I find that puzzling, but there you go.

we can't spend right up to the cap, and it's a huge gamble to spend on anything longer than 2 years term wise right now with the current situations we have on our hands

and the Sekera trade looks that much worse.....F me

Risky to sign playings on last year of term. No guarantee Lucic stays, one reason Bruins began shopping him last summer wasn't just play falling off for 3 years, he wants a 8 year deal at 'fair market value' which NESN said was 7M.

He might get an offer for that length from a young and rising team and sign there.

IT's a risk...he gave up another 1st round pick, and Miller (Jones was gone anyway)

How can Dean not match that

Meh, Sekera didn't choose to be here. Maybe he doesn't want to spend all his money on cost of living, and maybe the Stanley Cup isn't a major motivating factor for him. The money is the best he's ever seen and the term is extremely secure for him, and he certainly won't blow through all that money in Edmonton. We have enough long term deals and growing contracts. Just have to wait and see what alternate options we have available and where Dean goes from here.

Lucic won't steam roll Sekera. He'll be joining him next summer because we won't be able to afford re-signing him hahaha

It's not even if McKeown or the pick turn into NHL players, because prospects and picks are always gambles. No individual prospect or pick has that much value, since they're unknown. Thus, it's easy to say, "It's just a pick," "Prospects are just crap-shoots," that sort of thing.

That misses the point though; you have to keep a steady stream of prospects moving through your organization, and you want to be picking as high as you can in order to assure overall quality. So, no one pick is worth much, but you can't dump your top picks year after year, at least not without jeopardizing the medium-term future of the club. And, while dealing those picks for current players makes sense to a degree--full credit to Lombardi for Gaborik, and several other very shrewd trades--if you're getting players that either only play with you a bit (Sekera) or aren't really addressing your central needs (Lucic), then you're just burning through assets without much return.

That's my problem with the whole string of trades we've made. High-risk/high-reward moves are fine, and necessary in certain situations, but that doesn't mean you throw ALL caution to the wind and dump substantial assets for very marginal returns. Particularly when Lombardi, contrary to popular belief, doesn't really have an exceptional draft record. Nor do we have a well-stocked prospect pipeline right now. There are a few interesting players who may contribute, but very little top-end talent. I'd be much more okay with all this if it looked to me like we were genuinely improving the team on the ice after last season, but that's not obvious at all. Lucic helps us in one area, but not in the area we most need it.

Good post. The trade would have looked much better even with Sekera walking away if the players hadn't let Lombardi down. On. The flip side, they've delivered more than a GM could dream of the previous few seasons.

$5.5M for Sekera. 6 years. Wow. You guys don't think Kings could've afforded that?

He also got a no move clause though. Dean wouldn't have given that.

So Brad Richardson is a Coyote, eh?

Backup goaltending market is also drying up. Kings couldn't afford to give Greiss $1.5M? Ok... Let's go with Berube then!

By the way, on March 10, 1981 Kings GM George Maguire traded a 1st rounder in 1983 to BUF for 4 games of Rick Martin.

"With the 1st pick, 5th pick overall the Buffalo Sabres select Tom Barrasso from Acton-Boxboro H.S. in Massachusetts"

Worse than Sekera move by far. These things happen, especially when players force GMs hands.

Pucking-moving, play-driving defensemen are the engines of good NHL clubs. They make the whole team operate better. Consequently they're rare and valuable. I'd take that contract with the NMC all day.

Yes, but the Kings already have a couple of those, 3 if he doesn't get deported ;)

I don't think DL does NMCs. It would have to be someone very exceptional for him to write that into a contract. A counter point would be that the Kings are going to suck in 5 years in all likelyhood, so he'll want out anyways
