A-Mart has become really underrated around here. People are constantly talking about how there is NO WAY he can play on a second pair or is nothing but a 3rd liner, etc.

I think Alex Martinez plays on the 2nd pairing on almost any team in the league. Our defense has been so ridiculously good and deep for the last few year that I think people have forgotten what a regular defense looks like.

This is going to be the make or break year for AMart in terms of gauging his ceiling. Early on, his metrics were bad in terms of possession, but the Kings outscored the opposition by a ton when he was on the ice. It was the largest goal differential on the team IIRC. Then he got boarded in Tampa and that's all she wrote. He's not the possession beast like Muzzin, so he couldn't carry RR and Greene. But Voynov (if he makes it back) and McNabb are both better than those guys. If he's partnered with either, I would imagine he would play better. After his concussion, he never returned to form. So here's hoping the long off-season was good for him.

I know exactly what a regular season defense looks like and so does Sutter, that's why he moved Muzzin down to the second pair when Martinez wasn't getting it done. At this point Martinez is about to be 28 and he has only excelled on the third pair, it is what it is.

That's what I've been saying for years.
 
Comparing Martinez to Oduya, for the grass-is-greener folks, see attachments.

No question Muzzin has developed into a better defenseman than Martinez, but Martinez is still a fantastic d-man in his own right. He can't carry anchors, which Greene was last year (as was Regehr outside of an about 1 month stretch). I attribute a lot of it to general deep-playoff fatigue but also, the defensemen got hammered with minutes due to injuries, so yeah.

edit; not to mention Martinez's production is superior.

Would be very unlike Deano.
