If they win a cup or two, who cares ? Not sure why so many Leaf fans are fixated with what the Oilers are doing. The only thing I care about the Oil is whether 97 wants to come home.

Oh yes, can't wait until they win a few rounds with Soup in goal and he tells the no believers to kiss his ass.

He's definitely not in Marner's class.
and if they dont, he gets fired. gm's always gotta look at present and future when making moves. hate short sighted moves putting u in cap hell

Definitely a shocker. Wonder if it trickles down into them doing a full rebuild too.

Maybe he wanted to return to the US, maybe he didn't like Sutter... Hard to say.

All signs point to him wanting to be somewhere in the eastern US for family reasons. His wife about ready to give birth, wants the baby in the same country as the grandparents etc.

Columbus isn't exactly home but it's a hell of a difference getting on a plane and going to the eastern states from Columbus then it is from Calgary, especially if Canada ever goes back into COVID lockdown

We added malgin and a guy from the Soo were set
I’m sure there are other active AHLers that are Soo alum so I’m certain we aren’t done yet.

Genuine question: is there another recent GM who only has eyes for former players to this degree of lovestruck obsession? I get Holland is obsessed with former leafs but they weren’t his own players at any point.

That is the risk but he also has to keep 97 happy. Wonder if Kypreos has any insight when he said the Pens signed Malkin after Crosby put his foot down and told them to.

I mean these moves aren't really future shattering anyways

Jack is a risk

Kane for 4 is a perfect term

Kulak isn't making enough money for it to matter

Just a dude on Twitter trying to justify our terrible off season so far by shitting on the oilers

It's going to be a fascinating next few days for the Leafs. Quite a few options up for grabs, a few of them will have to take a lot less than they probably wanted in the next while.

Holl was said to be on the block for awhile. Kerfoot seems like he should be. After today, maybe that changes. But could still happen if things shake out from other teams.

Ducks still have 35M in cap space with nothing to really re-sign. I wonder what they'll do too. They need to do something.

Johnny Hockey going to Columbus sends shivers up my spine about Mathews doing the same thing in 2 years, wanting to be closer to family.

If Mathews does not re-sign before his NTC kicks in, we have to trade him. It will be painful but we cannot let him walk for nothing in return.
hes going to see what UFA offers him. LA Kings going to throw the bank at him

Wonder if Dimitrij Jaskin could be a big body Russian winger with unrealized offensive ability in the NHL that might fit in cheap with the Leafs. Did nothing in Arizona last year.

Unluckily for us our moron gm gave him a ntc that kicks in as soon as you're allowed to trade in the off season before his deal is up so we'd have to move him at this trade deadline

He is Czech more than Russian, and I think your last sentence says it all. He did nothing with Arizona last year, and doesn't have a spot on our team.

I'm going to guess there's another 1 or 2 UFA signings for depth, but I'm probably in the minority when I say I'd be fine with letting Robertson and other Marlies compete for the open spots and just signing depth/injury cover.

It allows us to evaluate the young players on cheap ELCs and its easy enough to trade for 1 or 2 quality bottom 6 players during the season (especially in a year where multiple teams will be tanking for Bedard).

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kerfoot - xxxx (Marlie or another signing)
Kubel - kampf - Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Gio - Liljegren
Muzzin - Holl/Sandin
Sandin/Holl

If no Marlies are ready then we'll definitely need to trade for somebody, but I think we have a few guys pushing for spots and Knies should be ready once his season is over as well.

If any young guys are ready, I'd rather give them the majority of the season to get comfortable rather than over the last couple of weeks in the year which is extremely tough to do (and then kick it up a notch in the playoffs).

I don't remember anything to this degree. Roger Neilson would seek out his former players and so would Mike Keenan but that was based on NHL experiences not junior level experiences. I think of the great hockey men as knowing every single player in the league and filing away new information every year regarding each draft class. Previous personal connections should be largely irrelevant with regards to hockey talent.

yes that is pretty far, but at the same time its closer than Alberta and still in the states... it is still perplexing why he went to columbus

I guess he figures they'll hang out a lot whenever they play within the division and go to the Metro NJ/Philadelphia area?
