Maybe Calgary trades Weegar right away?
If they do move a defenseman, they may be able to swing for a guy like Kadri. At this point, Kadri's options seem limited.
And Florida needs defense now, and it is not like there are any good ones on the UFA market outside of Klingberg.

Barkov-Tkachuk-Lundell is a nice big three to build around, and they still have Bennett, Reinhart, Duclair and Verhaeghe so they’re nice and deep on forward.
Deeper than the Leafs, though our high end talent is superior.

Look at that defense, it’s Ekblad, who’s emerged as a good #1, then Montour, Forsling, Gudas, Del Zotto and Marc Staal? Do they have a kid who’s ready for a spot?
Unless they go out and get a guy like Girard, that defense is terrible and will get shredded by Toronto and Tampa.

Practically no prospects either.
Lundell and Knight are their best by far and both are on the NHL team. Schwindt was one of their best remaining. Denisenko is trending towards major bust territory. Noel and Heponiemi have struggled. Pretty much their best prospects right now are Samoskevich, who is very mediocre as a top round pick, and Sourdif, who is like Hirvonen-level.

I think the weaker teams in the Atlantic have become quite a bit better and the top teams either haven't done enough or like Florida have got weaker.
Leafs have a shot at winning the division still but the goaltending really has to work out somehow.
I see it being a lot closer this year from top to bottom.

So I'm assuming they wanted to extend their window with this deal since Huberdeau/Weegar are free agents next year and would've costed a lot
But they have no cap space, no picks, no prospects and an awful defensive core. How are they re-tooling this?

You know what, with all the people down on our offseason. Florida and Boston got way worse than we did.

I'm not sure if's long term gain for Florida because they have gutted their farm system and will be relying on UFA and trades to shore up their roster for the next 4-5 years.

They don't have the cap space for a Girard.
They are already going to need to dump a bunch of salary just to fit in Tkachuk's new deal.
I imagine they pay to dump Hörnqvist and then use whatever remaining cap they have to bargain bin hunt for a cheap forward and who knows what they can do for their defense.
