One Top 6 power forward is a necessity at this point. Our top 6 is way too vanilla. Assuming Mathew Knies makes the team before the playoffs....

XXX - Mathews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander

That needs to be a top 6. Bunting just isn't physical enough to be in the top 6. He's a bottom 6 pest at best

Nylander and Sandin for Tkachuk is fair in terms of value, I think.

Nylander may give them a higher chance of re-signing, has a contingent of Sweden there already in Lindholm, Backlund, Markstrom and Andersson there.

For a ripe top 6 forward, Calgary will probably be open to this deal one would think.

Toronto takes a huge chance here, though as there is no way we're fitting in Tkachuk with Matthews contract coming up shortly. Not even sure he wants to play in Canada.
If I'm trading for Tkachuk it's to add to the forward group for the next two years. taking away Nylander doesn't really make us better.

sign Sandin to his cheap bridge and move Muzzin/Kerfoot to make it happen and run a 20 man roster.

This is of course assuming Calgary is interested in a futures package (Robertson/high picks, etc.).

In 2 years you let Murray/Brodie/Nylander go and give Sandin/Liljegren their raises.

We all trade Nylander constantly (I've even been guilty of putting him in hypothetical deals)...I think it'll be absolutely hilarious if he's the only of the 3 (Matthews, Marner, Nylander) that stick around to be a career Leaf lol Really hope Matthews & Marner spend their careers here though. Truthfully it's Tavares I want to move on from most, but that's not likely to happen

I can’t see a Tkachuk trade where it comes with an 8 year deal. It is going to limit the potential teams. I suspect Tkachuk ends up being acquired as a 1 (or ideally 2) year rental. I’m sure Tkachuk would be more willing to go to more teams on a short term basis for 2 years.

If I am Calgary I am trying to work out a 2 year sign and trade with 50% retention. Sell off to the highest bidder that he will go to for 2 years and then his 8 year deal can be dealt with then.

I also think the value Calgary gets for a 2 year 50% retained Tkachuk is going to be the same if not more than selling him off to a team wanting to do a long term deal.

We will see if Bunting can recreate his first-year performance, but I thought his chemistry with Matthew / Marners was exceptional. I wouldn't be so quick to drop him to the third line.

Just my theory, but I think Rielly got $7.5 and not something in the $9 million range because of his height. A real premium was paid out that summer and Werenski, Jones, Nurse, are more in the category of rangy all situation minute munchers. Sergachev projects to be that but isn’t there.
Meh, I don't buy that, 2/3 best defensemen D-men in the league (Fox, Makar) are smaller than Rielly. And considering that the game is headed more and more towards speed/skating, that bodes well for Rielly too. The best players of a generation typically dictate the way the game is played during their era (You saw it with McDavid that the league trended more towards speed, skating).

Nurse, and Jones might play in all situations but that's why their teams are no good. Just because a team puts a d-man on the pk doesn't mean they belong there. Werenski is no better than Rielly. I have both as a top 10-20 D-man in the league.

Bunting belongs with Matthews and Marner. Nearly wins the RoY, puts up 63 points, but somehow he's a bottom 6 pest at best? Strange.

I think many/most people believe he wants to go to St. Louis.

Whether it is a sign and trade or a trade and sign it will likely be long term, IMO. Too much risk about walking after 2 years. There is now history about his commitment to a team.

St. Louis has a cap situation, and my guess is the Flames want younger, long term players, and Thomas/Kyrou would fit that category. Although Schenn would also work, and it isn't far from his home.

If it is either of the younger players, St. Louis has to move some Cap. Curious if Tarasenko could end up involved.

Tarasenko and Thomas/Kyrou
for
Tkachuk extended

EDIT: Guess I should have read this first. Why would Tkachuk not want to sign long term in Calgary? Where could he end up?

I also think it was CJ who said recently something along the lines of “If Nylander walks” but in the same breath “when Matthews extension kicks in”

Maybe the insiders know something the rest of us don’t, or they are just speculating based on the rarity of that type of talent walking

I would say complete speculation.

Matthews is will be 25 in September and who knows what might happen between now and 2024, although the Leafs lose control next year on July 1st.

Whoever is in charge is in a no-win situation, trade him before NMC or give him complete control.

I think that these kids leave home at an early stage in their life as a billet in junior. (16-20) Then they get drafted to a city they know nothing about and again away from their families. They make good money and play in that city for 7 or 8 years. Meanwhile they see every day life occur. They miss their parents and grandparents birthdays,Christmas etc. one of these relatives get sick ,pass away and life sets in. They have their money and sometimes enough is enough and they just want to go home to family and loved ones.
This sometimes doesn’t mean they dont like a city it just means they are human and have sacrificed family and friends and they just want to be near the peoole who mean the most to them

This is the same guy (Serravalli) that said Gaudreau was getting 7x12m

Or they're not as desperate for clicks like all these other writers are that are saying Matthews is going to leave

What's the holdup here? We've got Kadri to sign, Tkachuk to trade, We've got 157 players unsigned from last year still --> 2022 NHL Free Agents Tracker

It's like teams are waiting for a singular move to open the market back up.

It's weird because it's not like teams completely cheaped out. Some contracts were expensive and awful, especially for defenseman. Many teams still have plenty of cap space.

Teams like Arizona, Buffalo and Anaheim just making a complete mockery of the salary cap is really weird. But hey... teams know you can only win by drafting impact players at a young age.

Cap not moving up and contracts going up really has not been good for average level player... who would have guessed?

I feel like we're sitting on a bomb of news still waiting to blow up but every day that passes we're still waiting.

Bettman is probably happy keeping NHL current in the off-season.

Curious how much Kadri is going to get and from which team.

Colorado is probably a good bet, but they have MacKinnon doubling his salary next year.
Then Rantanen is up same year as marner, and so they have to look at what kind of term makes sense for a 32 year old (Oct).

Nashville seems like a team that would be very interested in Justin Holl if the Leafs are still putting his name out there. They acquired McDonagh, they seem to be missing a mid-pairing RHD between Fabbro and Carrier. Sounds like they want to compete so it would make sense.
