What's interesting about trading Holl, Sandin, or Muzzin is that I think Dubas only trades one of them if another top-4 D is coming back. Say what you will about Sandin or Holl, but I believe that they can step into a top 4 role in case of injury. Actually, all of our D can step up and play top 4 minutes if necessary.

That being said, I wonder if Connor Murphy could be had out of Chicago. That would definitely require a Muzzin trade.

This is true. I’d like to move Holl but he’s still valuable as a bottom pair d-man and depth in case of injury.

Well, we got Jarnkrok. Everyone else still on the board.

Curious about ZAR. There was a ton of smoke leading up to free agency.

Dubas said he prefers Sandin on the left side
Then, I would trade him immediately, before his value drops like a stone. He won't see a single game on the left with those guys ahead of him. I thought for sure they'd just move him to the right.

He'll see some games. Muzzin and Gio need to be load managed. Not a bad position to be in if they can convince Sandin to buy in. If this kid really thinks he is worth 2.5m, then I doubt he buys in and they move him.

My wish list (after clearing some space with trades for futures):

Cheap Kessel and Subban.

My reasoning:

Kessel
-I know he's RW, but Nylander can play his off-wing
-Kessel can play both 2nd or 3rd line roles very well
-since he can play either line, we can audition Gaudette, Malgin and Robertson on the 2nd line in the first part of the year. See what we have there.
-he has slowed down a bit, but not that much. He had 20 goals in 53 games 2 years ago on a really crap team. When he was in Pittsburgh not too long ago (18-19), he put up 82 points.
-he should be cheap
-one of the few Americans who love Canada. LOL If I'm not mistaken, he still has a house here in TO
-will be motivated to be on a contender again
-proven playoff performer

Subban
-from Toronto and gets to come home (motivation?)
-he's not 40....he's 33....still has some gas left in the tank
-plays physical
-right shot
-good on the powerplay (finally get that heavy shot from the point)
-good bottom pairing guy who can replace Holl
-should be cheapish too

Can i ask fast question when thinking about our salary cap? How many players affect to salary cap or how many players do you need all the time that affect it?

NHL teams are only allowed to dress a maximum of 20 players – 18 skaters and two goaltenders – for any given game, but those 20 must come from the 23-player active roster. Both the 23-player active roster and 20-player game roster can change day-to-day and game-to-game.

There is no rule that says you have to carry 23 man roster.

If I understand your question correctly. Every player on the NHL roster affects the salary cap. Some teams go with 20 players on the roster, but the maximum is 23 players on the NHL roster.

If the players salary is higher than 1.25M (I think thats the number) and he's put on waivers and assigned to the AHL, whatever is higher than the 1.25M counts against the salary cap. So for example: John Doe has a 2M salary but is waived for the AHL, his cap hit is now 750k for the NHL roster even if the player isn't on the roster.

I would browse CapFriendly - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps and play around with things. They have a lot of information about the salary cap and rosters.

I think sandin is gone

Mete is watered down league min sandin so if they didn't have room for him he's at least a replacement that's useable and is probably fine with being the 7D

Kessel will never come back nor should be

Dude got lampooned in the media the entire time he was here

damn, Strome signed a 1 year deal in Washington for Kerfoot money.
I think I'd rather have Strome.

They're not trading Sandin over a $1m disagreement. Apparently he wants the Boqvist contract, which is very reasonable.

That would be interesting for sure, but I doubt they would both take the necessary paycut to be here.

The issue they don't have room for 2.5 mil for him.

We're either at cap or 700k over after engvalls 1.4 right now depending on how many people were carry

We definitely don't have room for another 2/2.5 unless we dump both kerfoot and holl and replace it with basically nothing

If he executed 3 trades between now and beginning of the season I would be surprised.
I don’t expect it, but I could see two from the big team.
One from the D side, and from the F side.

And I guess there’s a chance to move around some excesses, shuffle deck chairs for the Marlies kinda thing.

I watch a lot of Nashville games and had to endure Subban for too many games and I don’t want to watch him play on a nightly basis ever again.

What was is that you didn't like...his defensive game? Wasn't Subban playing a more prominent role in Nashville though? I'm picturing him more as a limited-role, 3rd pairing physical guy on the Leafs. Playing on PP2 as well.

He thinks he’s better than he is and was trying to put on a show more than trying to play hockey. Especially toward the end when he quit being physical.

If a team was willing to take Muzzin's full contract in return for future considerations, do we do it?
