I think they got DeAngelo to be Shattenkirk's understudy.

Honestly I could see Buchnevich getting dealt before DeAngelo.

I could see that as well. I just think that we have a lot of depth on D + some young pieces and still some cap space. I think JG might let this FA play out and see who still has needs then the phones come ringing and he try to swing a depth roster player or a young D man for an impact player to make another run.

So, what do we think the plan is with Staal...?

Is there a contract for contract trade to be had (presuming he waives his NMC)?

Could they really be thinking of buying him out on top of G? That would be a LOT of dead money for a LONG time.

My guess is they're kicking that can down the road for a year. They ought to be able to get Hayes, Miller, Skjei, and Vesey under contract next summer when Nash's deal comes off the books. The latter two will get bridged I'm sure, which should keep the money way down.

We all love Skjei on that 2nd pairing with Smith, but who knows if the Rangers actually feel the same way? They could still consider Staal a 2nd pairing guy for all we know. Last year's usage would certainly prove that the coach still feels that way.

Absolutely zero chance that happens

Why?

They have too many wingers and they can't trade Vesey, because the implications on signing future blue chip NCAA talent. AV isn't the biggest fan and he has a ton of value. Would anyone really be mad at a Buchnevich for Duchene deal for example?

Too many wingers? They have no more wingers than last year

And your solution to decreasing the large amount of wingers the team has is to trade the 22 year old top 6 winger on an ELC?

Yeah, makes total sense

I'd have to think about that one, simply because I have no idea what Buch is or will be. He could be Yak 2.0 or he could be Artemi Panarin. I have no idea what he will be. I'm not saying no but I'm not saying yes either. I think I would rely on my FO here.

Hayes + Buchnevich + Staal (some retention) for Duchene, pick (?) for Kovalchuk

Nash - Duchene - Kovalchuk
Kreider - Zibanejad - Zucc
Grabner - Andersson - Miller
Vesey - UFA - Fast

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Bereglazov/Holden - Deangelo

Hank
Pavelec

:amazed:

They had too many wingers last season too! Either Vesey or Buchnevich will wind up on line 4. Again.

And yes getting a player of Duchene's caliber would allow me to part with Buchnevich considering how badly the Rangers, who are back in win now mode need another center, especially one who fits the team so well and is already around what Buchnevich tops out as offensively. If Duchene walks, Andersson and maybe Chytil are ready by then as well.

Gorton won't trade the younger players (Skjei, Buch, Vesey) anyway so whatevs but think whatever ya'll want

But I definitely do think there's some expendable pieces here to move for a big impact forward (Center) and with Nash money coming off the books next year gives us the dollars to bridge contracts for the rest of the young core.

Bonus, if you're able to move Staa's contractl, now we really have flexibility. But that one I have no confidence in.

Maybe yes, maybe no, but with Duchene out there for the taking and the defense sorted, this is a very good time to be aggressive.

If the Rangers are confident in Andersson and Chytil being on the team in 2Y, I could certainly see them moving a Hayes or a Miller to get a center to help them compete while they have Mac and Shatty on board.

I think Vesey and Buch are prob off the table unless an offer comes by they can't look away from.

As I said, I would not be able to look away from a Buchnevich for Duchene deal. It is very good asset management. Especially in the Metro.

I don't see Buch being traded in a deal for Duchene... not when he's only got 2 years left at 6M.. That ELC is going to be important for the Rangers going forward, same with Skjei for another year.

Interesting Brooks tidbit that the Avs wanted Skjei for Barrie. Lol Joe Sakic.

not surprised at that... Barrie is pretty good, and a RHD which makes him more expensive to trade, but I don't think Skjei is getting as expensive as Barrie is in the near future.
