What does the Tkachuk trade look like? Can we even fit him anymore?

Greig, Brannstrom, Formenton, Zaitsev, 2023 1st + Signed Tkachuk or with assurances that he would sign

Johnny Gaudreau not only screwed over the Flames but most likely eliminated the chance of the Sens trading for Matthew Tkachuk. If Gaudreau would have informed the Flames his decision to leave before the draft, the Flames would have likely moved Tkachuk at the draft. The Sens would have very likely used the assets they used to acquire DeBrincat in a trade for Matthew Tkachuk.

Now it seems really unlikely that the Sens go that route. If he only signs a one year deal then they might consider trading for him at the trade deadline or giving consideration to him as a UFA. But if a team like St Louis acquires him then he likely gets locked up long term.

There's 100% no way to make the cap work with Tkachuk about to get 10.5 a year or whatever he'll demand. This is fantasy basically. We're going into the next 3 years in a very precarious cap position.

Let me dream...even go so far as to say DARE to dream.

Gaudreau pulled a Tavares and strung the Flames along assuredly to improve the offers from teams he actually was considering signing with.

Scumbag move.

I don’t know, it seems to me this all on Flames management for not having the steely nerve to draw a line in the sand last summer.
We love you, sign here, we will pay you. No? Traded.

You have to assume they won’t re-sign, if they won’t re-sign. Just can’t let guys who are that valuable walk for nothing. Now maybe they’d say it was a dream to lose to the oilers in the 2nd round so we’re good with that but those are the choices.

I really wish we knew this about Matt before the draft. Could have done something with the 7th overall pick + more. Now he'll cost a fortune in assets and it won't work cap-wise at all.

Debrrincat is nice but I have more faith in Tkachuk signing here long-term.

They may have thought losing him for nothing was worth the chance, as foolish as that is.

We lost Stone with a one year deal left and all we got was Brannstrom and a 2nd. That's not really much of a needle mover in the context of a rebuild, so I can see being willing to give that up for one last shot and arguably could be worth the additional revenue from a 2 playoff round season, even though that can't be predicted as any sort of certainty at the time the decision needs to be made.

I agree with the sentiment though. If you won't sign now, why should we expect you to a year from now?

If you bridge Sanderson and Pinto, don't acquire a new top 4 defenceman, dump Zaitsev, and Stü, Cat, and Matthew all sign for AAVs between 9-10 it might be able to just barely squeeze in depending on what the cap goes to the next few years. There would be absolutely no wiggle room though.

We did know it was a possibility, we talked about it in here, but the flames were never toning to deal MT before they ran out of time to sign JG, which was after the draft.

It’s the dominos.

To me it’s inexplicable blundering by Calgary management after watching the same thing happen in NY, and the watching us do a much better job, but still not perfect, when in our situation.

There was no excuse to lose JG for nothing, and now have MT on a one year and out the door as well….

Set back their inevitable rebuild hugely. I honestly think that our blueprint will be adopted by other teams; you pick a point and sell everything of value and start from the ashes. Don’t speed up the rebuild until the cupboards are full of promising prospects. Even without a lottery win you can still build a solid core over 3-4 years. Build culture and chemistry and then add quality UFAs.

I’m just glad we actually were shown that our team could make that spending leap to adding UFAs.

The fact that he signed for significantly less than what the Flames were offering is pretty telling. If he had no intention on signing an extension with them he really should have informed them earlier.

What makes matters worse is that he actually seriously disrupted the Flames organization by not doing that. The possibility of him leaving pretty clearly increased the chances that the Flames would need to do a full rebuild. It was pretty clear that if he parted ways that it was going to make it extremely unlikely that Matthew Tkachuk would sign a long term extension so they would be forced to move him to acquire assets for a rebuild.

The draft was coming up and the Flames likely had some players in the draft that they would have been interested in targeting as part of a rebuild. They likely would have been in a better position to get a superior return if forced to trade Tkachuk. They could have got some picks for this draft and next draft. They could have even moved other assets that weren't going to be part of a rebuild.

They miss out on making any trades at the draft and are now stuck with more uncertain outcomes for a return. Even now with a team like Ottawa acquiring Debrincat that has potentially eliminated a potential trading partner who could have helped drive up the trade price for Tkachuk.

Considering that the Flames treated him well and were willing to give him a massive payday to try and keep him, it is a pretty shitty move to leave in the way he did.
