But how does this happen?

No one is taking Z without a major sweetner from us. I don't see how there can be any budget left to buy him out. And I don't see how they can bring in an expensive top 4 d-man without getting rid of Zaitsev's salary.
Future draft picks & prospects could get it done.

ready or not .. neither would be able to replace Zub as a top 4

Holl would be an ok stop gap.
We don't need any more stop gaps; we have enough already. :)

It's not terrible. Chabot Brannstrom get more offensive starts, allow them to push the pace and not have Chabby playing 25+ every night. Sanderson Zub could play well against higher skill lines, and transition to offense. Holden Hamonic can deal with heavier forward lines.

Thomson and JBD can also push for spots and fill in when injuries happen. Even without a true top-4 pickup, another 5-6 dman would be good insurance.
Zaitsev is not there.

Do a google translate on the Russian

A stop gap > hole.
I did. :)

If the goal is to ice an NHL team its not terrible. IF the goal is to get in the playoffs and have a chance to win a round or two ... its not good enough.

I hate to break it to people but as you're playing with salaries for the 2024-25 season you'll see that the numbers don't work and Debrincat is likely gone. Even with conservative numbers we are like $4M over if you project ahead and I suspect he'll be the unfortunate choice we need to make.

Not a fun topic to discuss now but let's call it what it is, Debrincat is a 2 year rental with a really tough decision attached to him at the 2024 TDL.

There's no way of knowing what will happen, at this point.

1. We don't know what the cap upper limit will be (could very well be over $90M)
2. We don't know what the internal budget will be (what if we're coming off two seasons of $18k+ fans per game, revenue from a few playoff series, the Melnyk's take on a financial partner, and they've broken down on Lebreton?)

Couldn’t we just ‘bury’ zaitsev as 7th d for the remainder of the contract? DJ needs strict f***ing directions that this guy is not a top 6 d given our options, let alone a top 4 option. Keep him around to translate for Zub, and until a trade option comes along.

At some point Thomson, JBD or Brannstrom will need to have some time in a RD spot. Why wait?

Still gotta pay him if he's in the press box

Zaitsev will be moved his salary structure will make it worth while for a team and we will toss some picks to make it happen

I think some rd dominoes need to fall like klingberg

My guess is they are holding onto him until they find an upgrade - and he goes to Calgary

Yeah but paying him to not play may be preferable than to give up assets to get him off the team. Maybe Dorion can convince someone he’s valuable enough to take a small sweetener rather than a painful one a la Murray. But that seems unlikely right now. Maybe d injuries will hit another team and someone will take him out of desperation.

Yeah I stand by my original statement. Toronto was desperate for a goalie and we still needed to send a sweetner.

I seriously doubt a team is going to take on Z's 4.5M without sending salary back. I feel like Dorion has shot his load on Giroux and Cat. Hope I am wrong.
Yeeesh, that's an image I don't need while scrolling during lunch.

What about subban at a good price for the bottom pairing
I'd avoid. Would block prospects without providing any real benefit these days. If we get a D, go biggish or go home.

The money in the press box would be restrictive of who they can bring in to shore up the right side

Hi guys, AZ fan (yes we exist), I come in peace. Just wanted to say I think Dorion did a f***ing amazing job these past few weeks and you guys will be fun to watch.

But also... I don't agree with the bolded at all. in 2024-2025 Zaitsev and the Matt Murray retention is gone, also by that time you'd think Forsberg becomes your #1 so you don't need Cam Talbot and can therefore sign a cheap backup, that's $8.5m additional cap right there (assumes 1m for a backup goalie). Sign Debrincat for 8.5 and that's still 6.5m more room than you have right now, so that's 18m for Stutzle (year prior) and whatever additional money to keep your D. That's plenty of space, even with a flat cap. And the year after that Giroux falls off so no real long term issues imo.

Anyway imo you have plenty of cap room, esp when you compare it to teams in real trouble like VGK or BOS (or most other teams really).

So, imo you guys could / should be very good for a long time going forward, as a neutral fan, I think your top 6 is easily one of the best in the league going forward. Here's to hoping you guys make playoffs (and start making runs) sooner rather than later, will be cheering you on from out here in the desert
