If we are to believe the term was an issue, and that’s a big IF considering the source was spinmaster G, then gotta imagine every maneuver made is keeping Sanderson extension in mind. Also the sens want to offload Zaitsev which is no doubt bringing down any trade value, so likely our trade wouldn’t be favored by other GMs operating near the cap (leaving us only one choice which is Arizona and they sorta know it too)

Dorion absolutely still needs to find that top-4 defenseman. Shoring up our offense in such a big way and leaving the back end with a big hole in it is such a waste.
He will. There still needs to be some patience involved, although I was loving the major news happening every day that was going on LOL

Less supply, while I’m sure there’s still a lot of demand
Tell that to Klingberg's agent. LOL

Less supply and less demand. I'm not sure one trumps the other. Also, we saw that being able to take back a cap hit reduced the acquisition cost substantially, like when we traded Brown for a low return,

I'm confident there is someone out there trying to sign Klingberg, Kadri, or someone else who is willing to "lose" value in exchange for clearing cap.

1 demand went down, 1 supply went down.

Teams are tight; we've seen more trades to clear space ( burns, max pat, brown, mrazek Murray etc) than we have for True buyers ( Fiala, DeBrincat).

Klingberg still not signed. Hard to argue this is a sellers market.

Everyone and their mother knows Dorion has made a top-4 dman a priority and his options are shrinking.
And Dorion knows that teams are willing to dump players like Marino for low value because they need to shed cap to sign players. Maybe this prompts Severson to be put on the block. One less bidder for Weeger maybe?

I don't think it shrinks options at all, I think it gives him leverage with his cap space.

The demand is always much higher than supply (like housing), there’s like 30 teams always looking for help in the top 4, while there’s like 7-8 dmen available, even less now that FA period has come and gone. Cap crunch is probably why Klingberg isn’t signed, but from Arizona’s perspective (which was the original point) why would the asking price go lower? It’s only gonna go higher now, other teams aren’t in any position to hold the coyotes over a barrel, so they got all the leverage especially with their cap space

There's precisely 4 teams who can fit and afford Klingberg (or any of the other major FA's) right now. None of them are anywhere close to contention.

While I might agree that top-4 defenseman and top-6 forwards will always be a a premium due to demand outstripping supply, you have to reciprocate and admit that cap space is always ay a premium as well. There's never enough to afford all the players teams want to keep and deals will always be out there as a result.

Why would you have him above Formenton or Greig?

Just think he has more value as a D-man over a similar quality player in Formenton. Greig is unproven and smaller build. Prolific junior players aren't guaranteed to translate. I'd take a young productive NHLer over a WHL player typically. I like Greig. I just like the added certainty coming from someone who has proven.

Doesn't sound like NJ fans agree, they're not that high on him and he seems to have fallen out of favour, much like Brannstrom. Don't think they see him as valuable as we do with Pinto, Greig and Formenton.

Prolly a bit of a poor assessment on their part. 22 year old, 2nd year pro with better stats already than Brannstrom. I suspect at 25 he'll be a top 4 d, 2nd pp kinda guy. We'll see.

My opinion is Arizona knows that he won't re-sign - or they have a pretty good inkling. 3 years means he has nice term, but the longer they wait...let's just say if it gets to 2 years left, they price goes down IMO, if it gets to 1 year left he's a straight rental.

The value will never be higher than it is this summer. So they are kind of committed to it. If they can do it by the deadline, they might be able to still maximize, but next summer it'll be looked at as a 2 year rental and teams won't give as much.

Or at least, that's the way I'd think.

I hate to break it to people but as you're playing with salaries for the 2024-25 season you'll see that the numbers don't work and Debrincat is likely gone. Even with conservative numbers we are like $4M over if you project ahead and I suspect he'll be the unfortunate choice we need to make.

Not a fun topic to discuss now but let's call it what it is, Debrincat is a 2 year rental with a really tough decision attached to him at the 2024 TDL.

I think this is accurate.

I just hope it wasn't Marino's term that scared Dorion off because that would be extremely dumb

That's what Garrioch said awhile back. Echoed what he said about not wanting to match Fiala's term.

Dorion doesn't want to acquire a player with a long-term contract if he's not needed long-term or won't fit in the budget down the road.

Silly considering Marino is fairly young and almost certainly could be dealt in a couple years if necessary and return assets back.
