When can Zub (and others with 1 year remaining) sign an extension? I would have thought when free agency opened, but someone said the other day when the season starts.

Mete:

Drafted by Montreal
Claimed off waivers by Ottawa
Signed as a FA with Toronto

I believe that the next step in his Canadian tour will be a trade to the Jets, but I don't know how he gets to Alberta after that.

Wonder if Justin Holl might be our guy if we strike out on Klingberg and Marino

Had a bad year but was pretty good the two previous years. 6'4 RD that only costs 2M.

Not exactly the top 4 D acquisition we were all hoping for but wouldn't cost much.

Leafs need to clear some cap after signing Jarnkrok if they want to re-sign Engvall and Sandin.

I was just thinking maybe Alex Kerfoot. Would it be too much to expect as the future considerations? $750k salary left and a $3.5 cap hit Toronto has to shed now that they're at the cap and have players to sign. Could see it as a stop gap while using something else from the bottom 6 towards a Dman trade.

I wasn't a fan of the two-year extension when it happened. He was clearly a good d-man but they figured JBD/Thomson would be ready by now.
ready or not .. neither would be able to replace Zub as a top 4

I think the board/fan consensus and general comments by management suggested that the team wanted Zub long term but Zub and his agent were banking on a likely big pay day after he was a better known commodity at UFA.

Extend Zub.
Run with Hamonic on the 2nd pair and Zaitsev on 3rd pair, unless something better comes along.
See how the offense fits together. 6 guys is lot looking for offensive opportunities.
See what Debrincat's contract expectations are and whether they fit with the team.
If there are questions in the last 2 points... trade Debrincat and Zaitsev for a top pairing RHD next summer.

Is anyone willing to grab Demelo back? Not a good offensive player, but always does well defensively and has good analytics. Not to mention not expensive at all.

Holl was awful last year but quite good 2 years ago. What is Dubas doing ? I really hope Engvall goes to arbitration. If a team liked Sandin he would be an easy offer sheet, 2.1M is only a 3rd as compensation, Hughes should do it.

Be pretty comical if they ship Zaitsev out and bring Demelo back

For sure, but it makes perfect sense. Also if we get a contract as cheap as Demelo, we can afford to sign Debrincat and Stutzle to long-term high 8mill deals without losing a single player on our roster (Assuming we bridge Pinto of course). If one of Klingberg or Weegar comes, we absolutely lose both Formenton and Joseph, while we do have Greig to replace them. Why not just let Greig replace a fourth liner, and have Demelo instead?

If we were considering DeMelo, I’d rather just give JBD a nice long look. He was really solid defending to end last season, and great defenders with limited offence tend to make less. We need guys like JBD and Kleven to make it as shut down guys so that Sanderson and Chabot can make the big money, while the other two make the mid cash. Keep rotating vets on the third pair with kids and AHL vets as call ups.

Zub is another mid cash guy.

Refs gonna win us a bunch of games this year

Hopefully can be parlayed into an advantage. The NHL loves managing games to keep penalties even unfortunately.

Maybe the Tim Peel hot mic will help the league push to move away from that mentality, but I wouldn't count in it.

A large advantage in penalties for and against along with a top-10 powerplay would go a long way to securing a playoff spot.

If we can’t get a top 4, we should try role out

Chabot-Brannstrom
Sanderson-Zub
Holden-Hamonic
It's not terrible. Chabot Brannstrom get more offensive starts, allow them to push the pace and not have Chabby playing 25+ every night. Sanderson Zub could play well against higher skill lines, and transition to offense. Holden Hamonic can deal with heavier forward lines.

Thomson and JBD can also push for spots and fill in when injuries happen. Even without a true top-4 pickup, another 5-6 dman would be good insurance.
