The 4th line can be designed with different attributes. Some teams design it to be an energy line. Others design it to be a strong defensive line. And others design it to consist of several fillers or specialists such as a policeman, a PK specialist, a PP specialist, or a 7th D. Plus some want it to have offensive players.

Agreed, I should have said as much. Point is that a 4th line is rarely built with a rookie offensively minded player who has limited upside beyond certain goal scoring attributes.

Sokolov actually has some agitating qualities. He is very strong on his skates, is a nuisance around the net and can be very effective on the forecheck and working pucks along the boards and in the corners. He is capable of playing a heavy cycle game. He mentioned on the locked on senators podcast, that during a rough practice part way through the season, that he crosschecked Kastelic and they ended up dropping the gloves. From his account, it seems like he handled himself well. It also sounds like he has put on some muscle mass and is in really good shape.

I think it will be interesting to see how he looks in preseason. If he can lay some solid hits and really embrace that agitating style and continue to be a nuisance around the net, on the forecheck, along the boards and play a heavy cycle game then he could set himself up well to take on a 4th line role. Being willing to scrap certainly helps as well.

His grin reminds me of Neil tbh.

He hasn't really demonstrated the big hits or the willingness to fight yet but I guess we will see what he becomes as he progresses in his development. I think having Sokolov embrace the physicality and agitating style will help him become a full time NHLer and have a long career. It will allow him to play more roles.

He demonstrated quite a bit of that rough style at the prospect tournament last season so it is just about him finding consistency with it. I wasn't able to get audio for the second game when I put the clips together, but when I watched it live you should have heard Sokolov talking trash from the penalty box. He can be a real pest t times.

Perhaps. The thing holding Sokolov back right now is playing with pace and not just in his skating. It’s how quickly he makes decisions, how quickly he reacts. He’s fine in the AHL but he is just behind the play at the NHL level in the limited time he has played.

Steve Lloyd basicat said forget about chychrun. Things can obviously change but as of now, he ain’t coming
I would rather a RHD anyways, but I don't think we'll find anybody who is otherwise as perfect a fit and is available. Too bad.

Moving on, I'd guess we're inquiring about guys like Myers, Severson, Larsson, and Roy.

I like the fact dorion isnt just throwing s*** at the wall and hoping it sticks with the Chychrun trade. If arizonas asking price is too high we will find another solution.
Arizona are trying to be too clever with a guy who's never played a full season and has 1 good season on his resume. Asking price will come down when they realize he's not gonna be happy coming back for another season of bland, uninspired hockey.

We have zero need for De Haan, just doesn't make sense to add him imo, I mean where does he fit in?
De Haan makes sense if we unload Zaitsev but otherwise just give him a PTO and see if he has anything left.

Even then, he's behind 4 guys on the left and we'd be asking him to play his off side. We really should be targetting a RHD with PTOs.
This should be plainly obvious.

Come on team - we don't need to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for players that would be on their off side and haven't been good for a few years.

If Lassi or JBD can't adequately fill in to the level of some of the retreads being thrown around GMPD should have been addressing RD with a laser focus all Summer (and yes I know some will say I don't know that he hasn't...if he he has he failed).

I believe in the young guys to come up by mid season and be a little shot in the arm.

Let's see how team does as constructed and then evaluate next move.

It’s Lassi’s time to shine.

The assets required for Chycrun (sp) are not worth it.

He’s intriguing, but not at that price, on his off side.

State watching shows a young D who hasn’t played a full season, had one huge season, and had a much less effective season last year, playing on his off side (which we would want him to play).

Sure for a fair deal, but I’d rather look elsewhere. I think our problems on D are vastly overblown in here.

Adding Talbot and Sanderson alone is a pretty big off season add. We’ll find another steady D to fill in if our kids can’t get the job done in camp.

We’re not looking to win the cup this year. We can still afford to be patient. Cap space needs to be heavily monitored right now, going forward. We don’t need any hasty missteps.

finding a defensemen mid season is hard and pricey

lets stop making excuses. If the defense fails again without any change its on Dorion

You guys and your ‘it’s in Dorion’ lol. It’s been an epic summer so far, try and enjoy it. Our defense and goaltending is already much better than what we started with either of the last two years.

It’s not an excuse. We don’t need to overpay for a guy who doesn’t play the position we actually need, and we have to be careful about what salary commitments we make going forward.

Take a step back and see that this isn’t an all in year coming up, we don’t have to break the bank or trade assets we want to keep right now, we really can afford to be patient here.

A top 4 RD is the ONLY hole this team has right now, and few teams in the league can even make that claim.

We’ll find out guy, but we need to be smart and patient and get the right type of player that fits our roster need, and salary structure. I’d personally prefer a big stay at home defender on the right side.

As for trading for a D man mid season being pricy? Naw, the guys are pricy right now, and we aren’t going to be desperate. We also have a wave of waivers coming up to look at, and we’re looking for a #4 guy, not a star. We’ll be fine.

our defense is the same as last season except for Sanderson who is still recovering from injury lmao

We don't really know what the other holes are on the roster. A partner for Chabot has been a need for the past 4 years and every year dorion has cycled through different guys. This isn't a one year problem. It needs to be fixed.

If you want to move a 2023 1st, Greig + another high quality asset for Chychrun you could get him. I think that’s a massive overpayment myself.
