Florida's defense is somehow worse than ours now even with Zaistev...

ekblad/montour/forsling/gudas/sjalin/carlsson/staal

like what is that haha

This is where they ranked in ice time last year and in the playoffs. They added M.Staal this summer.
It looks pretty bad. Plus they're well over the cap and won't have a 1st rounder until 2026, so they can't easily fix it. Next year, they free up $10.6 million in effectively dead cap (Yandle's buyout and Hornqvist's last year).

Player / Reg. TOI rank / Playoff TOI rank
Ekblad 1 – 1
Forsling 3 – 2
Weegar 2 - 3
Chariot X – 4

Gudas 4 – 6
Montour 5 – 5
L.Carlsson 6 – X
M. Staal X – X (bottom pairing in Detroit)

Is it just me or did Florida get absolutely hosed in this deal?
Hub and Weegar only have 1 year left and I don't think FL could fit them so they traded them for 8 year security of Tkachuk. I don't think it's a fleecing. If Calgary manages to sign them it's a pretty big W for them and if they don't it could still be a W depending on their respective returns in trades.

How about Dubois pulling the power move by signing his QO. Winnipeg should move him ASAP.

For people calling it a win for either Calgary or Florida, Consider the downsides for both.

1. Florida Option 1: Do you want to spend 15-16M+ for Huberdeau and Weegar into their late 30's? You also run the risk one of them leaves in Free Agency.

2. Florida Option 2: Do you want to spend 9.5M for Tkachuk into his early 30's and have 5M+ left over to fix your roster?

I think most people will pick option 2. There's a cost for option 2 though. It's a first round pick and a mediocre prospect. Even with the cost, I think I'd go for option 2, personally.

1. Calgary Option 1: Sell Tkachuk for futures. All your older players might ask out and you're stuck with a 5+ year rebuild. You're staring at the Abyss. Some of your high quality young players like Hanifin also only have a few years of contract left. It could take a decade to find a top-6, top-4, and starting goaltender like Calgary has currently after the Tkachuk trade.

2. Calgary Option 2: Trade for a risky package of assets that keeps the team competitive. If you can't re-sign them or if the team struggles, you can always sell them at the deadline for a similar value of a "futures" package that you originally sought for Tkachuk .

I think those are the reasons the trade war made.

Calgary had a chance to rebuild in a year where there's potentially multiple franchise players available in the draft. Instead they're trying to tread water.

Does this trade bring them closer to winning a Cup? I'd say no.

They're either trying to win with core players in their 30's or they're delaying their rebuild by a year.

Assen na yo!

There's avreal possibility that Florida's offense is significantly worse this year. Calgary fans suggested that Tkachuk's season was largely because of Gaudreau and Huberdeau drove Florida's offense the same way.

There's no way that trading a guy who doesn't want to be there and who is set to make 9.5M per year for a guy who finished top 5 in Hart voting and the 8th leading vote getter for the Norris (who will make 150K more than Tkachuk this year) plus a prospect and a first can be a bad deal.

The biggest flaw (as a result of Gaudreau leaving) got filled in a huge way.

If klingberg signs with ottawa who does he play with?

Chabot Klingberg
Branny//Sandy Zub
Holden Hamonic//zaitsev

Or

Chabot Zub
Branny//Sandy Klingberg
Holden Hamonic//zaitsev

Or

Chabot Klingberg
Holden Zub
Branny//Sandy Hamonic//Zaitsev
With whichever partner he plays best with! Try him with them all.

I would be excited to see a Chabot-Klingberg pairing as it could be very offensive oriented and significantly increase GF when one of the 2 top lines are on the ice.

Well yeah the likes of Josh Brown, Hamonic and Zaitsev aren’t amazing puck-movers but we have a ton of guys now or very close that can move the puck. JBD, Thomson, Brannstrom and Sanderson are all good puck-movers with varying offensive abilities obviously. We have very little physicality on the backend and not as much size as you’d want, as Brann/JBD/Lassi are small-average, and it’s not like Chabot and Klingberg play that type of game.

In a perfect world, we could use a player with size, a great shot and that plays physical on our back-end. Having said that, there just aren’t many options. I’d do Klingberg on a short-term deal but I doubt he takes that, and long-term I think he’s redundant for the above reasons.

I like Kilingberg and would sign him for 3 to 5 years. We have defencemen who will be moving along soon anyway: Zaitsev, Holden, Hamonic.

What we might have left would be:
Chabot - Klingberg
Sanderson - Zub (sign him too)
Brannstrom - ???? (JBD or Thomson)
Kleven/Roger/Romeo/Next Year's first rounder?

I think the deal is a win for both. Flames get to stay competitive and if they decide they want to blow it up, they can still move a lot of pieces for futures. But they also have Lucic and Monahan coming off the books next year so they'll have capspace to make a big signing/trade to stay competitive.

Panthers get younger, and have some security to stay offensively top tier. Their defense takes a hit but with Yandle's buyout coming off the books next year, they'll be fine.
