As much as I am wondering WTH is going on with the team this year, and looking to move Norris or Chabot, it's pretty much the same team as last year. Is it possible that the new additions in Tarasenko and Kubalic are room dividers? The team should move those guys with the Sens eating salary in Kub, and possibly this may fix the room dynamic. Just grappling at straws before we send a lightning bolt through that room.
If Tarasenko and Kubalik who are first year senators are able to divide by all accounts a really close knit group then the issues are even worse than expected.

Move 1: Korpisalo on waivers. Sent to the AHL to re-find his game and gives salary flexibility ($1.1 mil) for a period while down there.

Move 2: Recall Sogaard. Give him and Forsberg a run of NHL games to at least get a sense of what we got.

Move 3: Ask Hamonic if he'd be willing to move to a contender.

Move 4: Begin soliciting offers on Tyler Boucher and Thomas Chabot.

PS - I am a big fan of Chabot. Just hard to not see the writing on the wall.
Couldn't agree more with this post.

Try out Sogaard at this point, can't be any worse.

Corey Perry is cleared. If we're going after vets I think we should be ALL IN
Without knowing the specifics of what he did (aside from his apology indicating it was alcohol related) I don't know how you can be all in. The team probably knows more than what's in the public domain, if they are comfortable with bringing him in, fine, but we're looking for vets that can be the example for the kids, the standard for personal conduct is much higher for the guys we're interested in imo than say for a vet laden team looking to bring in pieces that can help for a run.

As their cap currently stands, they would need to sign him to a league minimum deal with paper performance bonuses, like play 5 games get x million. The big downside is that unless the Senators cleared out enough cap at the deadline to cover those bonuses, they would carry over to next season.

Something that hasn't been talked about with Dorion's mismanaging of the cap, is that we could end up losing up to 1.85M next year because Sanderson may hit some of his performance bonuses.

Bingo.... This "we will see who wants to be here and who goes", will cost serious coin.

But more troubling is, 16,000 asses in a 19,000 seat arena means loses... Now add the contracts.. and maybe Andlauer panics. And looks for a way to shed 5-10 M... So now, the Pinto rumour, Greig, Klevin, "Sanderson", "Zub".. all get put on the table.

And we are back in Eugene Melnyk territory.
That would be a disaster. If cap space or money becomes an issue I think MA is more likely to pay to ditch a bad contract, such as Korpisalo, Chabot. Or buy them out. MA isn't at that point yet but I have to think he is surprised at how bad this team is and is now considering what might be needed.

I have a hard time seeing another team take on Chabot or even Norris at this point.

If the team doesn't come around they might be go into a rebuild status, as much as that is distasteful to fans who just experienced what appears to be a failed rebuild.

We'll see. There remains reason for optimism; we'll know the direction by September I expect.

Do you think he would come here?

They would have to overpay.

It took 4M to get him to Chicago. He is going to have less leverage now because so few teams have cap room for him. That isn't accounting for how whatever happened might have damaged his reputation with teams, if it did at all.

A deal with him would probably be something like league minimum base salary, and then depending on the market for him anywhere from 1M to 3M in performance bonuses based on something like 5GP or 10GP.

Or, it would be some sort of consolation like giving him 2 years of term when every other team will only go 1 year. The problem with that is it would require moving out cap, which isn't easy right now.

We don't have cap space unless we move someone in any case.

They can sign him to a league minimum base salary and send down other players. They can give him most of his money in soft performance bonuses (5GP, 10GP, etc).

Performance bonuses can be carried over to the next season if a team overspends. It is a loophole that is often used with 35+ players to extend the cap in the current season at the expense of losing cap the next season.

Sure give a few games to Soogard so he gains experience. But we are better off tanking at this point. I don't want Sogaard getting shellacked and losing confidence.

Right now we can't fit him in unless we waive Forsberg or Korpisalo, so a few games isn't really an option, it's all in or nothing.

I'd rather wait until we clean up the mess in front of the goalies. Give the guy a fighting chance.

Found this on Puckpedia

While performance bonuses count against the salary cap, teams are permitted to exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses, to a maximum of 7.5% of the Salary Cap.

I'd rather waive Korpisalo. No way he gets picked up right now. Team needs better goaltending as they're completely demoralized.

Yes, that's true unless we waive someone, or there's more injuries I suppose. I'm not really worried about salvaging this season anyhow, and just responded to someone making a post a few posts up (which you didn't respond to btw). I'm just taking the long term view at this point and writing off the season.

Why would we expose Sogaard to this mess? Belleville is finally figuring out how to play D and the goalies are doing great there right now. Let them fight for the playoffs there.

I know this isn't the main takeaway - but why would someone from an NHL org ask Dreger about Pinto?

Team people and media people talk all the time. It's not like they're asking for Dreger's opinion on whether he's a good player or not, they're asking what Dreger's hearing about him as a person, or about his gambling situation, or his standing in the organization now. Information that Staois certainly isn't going to divulge, and that Dreger - who's job it is to talk to people and collect information - might know.

Right now, I'd like to:

- Find a trade for Brannstrom, if a contender wants him for depth, or a bottom feeder needs a guy that can fill a top 4 role while they rebuild.
- Call up Kleven for a different dynamic in the D.
- Trade Tarasenko for futures,
- Find any takers for Kubalik, he isn't a fit here,

In the offseason,
- If we can find a top 4 RHD that is physical and strong defensively, that's our target.
- Make a call on which of Chabot or Chychrun we're going with long term. Shop the other one.
- Find a vet winger that plays a heavy two way game.

Tkachuk-Stutzle-Giroux
Greig-Norris-Batherson
Joseph-Pinto- someone like Neiderreiter
Kelly-Kastelic-MacEwen

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot/Chychrun-Top 4 RHD (a right handed Methot???)
Kleven-JBD
Hamonic

So, that's a big change on D, not a lot of change up front, the only "big" move up front I could see is moving Norris since we have good center depth with Stu, Pinto, and Greig, but idk if the team will go there (maybe a trade of Norris and one of Chych/Chabot to get that RHD?)
