So much for the “DJ did a good job with the kids” argument. First thing the new assessors saw was “this team needs better vets to change the culture in the room”.

I think we can all just say DJ was a massive waste of time that served absolutely no purpose. Let alone a positive purpose

That is certainly a concern.

I guess you just have to assess your roster as it would look if it were reasonably healthy. Under those circumstances it is a waste of cap resources to allocate ~25M to three guys that are essentially the same player. They're already committed to Chabot and Sanderson.

I feel like the Chychrun situation is heading down the Duchene path. A guy comes from a losing environment and is hyped to have a shot at winning, but it just ends up more of the same. To be honest, I doubt he'd even want to extend here this summer. So get ahead of it and get the max return possible and begin re-tooling the roster.
Well if Chychrun is actually willing to re-sign and the logjam is a concern, then I’m moving Chabot first.

It's one thing for a lottery team to trade assets to bring in young high end talent, but we are in no place to be incentivizing CLB to trade us a 31 yr old guy who at best will be our 3rd line center or 2nd line LW. If needs be we can seek someone out in UFA, like Foligno, Noesen, Okposo, or Henrique. Not as good, but you keep the assets and still get a guy that can fill a role while providing that vet experience.
I have zero confidence we can get someone of similar quality in UFA.

Well, we may have to overpay a bit, or settle for someone who's more 3rd liner than middle six, I think Foligno would be a good cheap UFA alternative, he's not as good but a vet 3rd line ex captain.

I'd also argue if we're throwing the kind of assets around you feel it will take to land him, I'd be targetting a RHD, the gap between Zub and our next RHD is huge.

Every player under DJ regressed as time went on, and the team as a whole looks as bad as ever during his tenure.

Dude f***ed this team up so bad. The roster may be poorly constructed but there's no reason why our "stars" are worse than they were 5 years ago.

I agree with you so don’t think I’m trying to argue but our players need to take a large portion of the blame here too. They’ve been rotten and lazy

I'll move Chabot before Chychrun.
Too bad there will be absolutely no takers.

Wrong again. The black and white projection you always have is incorrect. He was great for the first few years after a tear down. Kept a tight room amongst chaos. Players play hard and for each other but he should have been replaced two years ago. Defensive structure and accountability should have been the focus from an entirely new coaching staff. The players that have regressed the most are the d men. They still have the d man coach.

From what I see, the kids never seemed interested in adding more tools to their toolbox. They try the same moves every time. Hardly any of them have added any significant muscle. The same injuries keep occurring over and over.

It doesn't take long for the NHL to have a book on players. The cute little moves that work in the rookie year don't work in year 3+ when everyone knows what you're going to do and counters it. And you can't bust though the counter when you're as weak as a wet noodle.

Why couldn’t defensive structure and accountability been the focus of DJ? You’re actually allowed to do that in rebuilding years. Like..it’s a thing.

Tight room amongst the chaos? Seems like he just lets a bad culture fester in the room and let the kids get away with way too much.

I'm on board with any trade that brings us closer to becoming a legit contender. This team has something fundamentally wrong with it, and fortunately it's not my job to determine what that is because I have no idea. They sold us hope this year, and we're all outta that so.. they've lost me. The most dejected and apathetic I've ever been about the Sens.

I truly think no one on this team is an untouchable. If there is a move that makes us better, Staios should do it. I've learned to not get emotionally attached to players, I am a Sens fan after all.

Funny that what this team needs most is a Mark Stone type player. Elite IQ, motor, and heart. Dorion and Melnyk f***ed this franchise up so bad. Staios and co. have a huge job in front of them

I didn't say it wasn't. Why would you assume that?... But 3 years of a new coach the message gets thin and all teaching has likely been instilled. They needed a new voice. Obviously dorion can't identify that and melnyk was too cheap to hire the right person.

Yes he did keep a tight room amongst a psychotic owner and a petty scummy GM who had no leadership skills. During covid, a tear down, no talent and no fans. Bad culture? He kept them away from it. Do you have any memory recall?

It really can't be understated how badly he has f***ed up the past 7 years.

Rule number 1, if a GM is in charge, and making moves to win, when a team has a catastrophic collapse like in 17-18, he should not be in charge for a rebuild of that team. It legitimately makes zero sense.

Staois and Andlauer have their work cut out for them, and Dorion left a few more live grenades before leaving.

I still remember the day in Jan or Feb of 2018 that Boo Boo reported that Dorion had been given an extension.

I honestly thought it was a mistake, that Dorion had been fired and Bruce had just misunderstood or something...

I generally agree other than to say there are a few exceptions to the weight part. Brady and Greig in particular have put on a lot of muscle since being drafted.

Move 1: Korpisalo on waivers. Sent to the AHL to re-find his game and gives salary flexibility ($1.1 mil) for a period while down there.

Move 2: Recall Sogaard. Give him and Forsberg a run of NHL games to at least get a sense of what we got.

Move 3: Ask Hamonic if he'd be willing to move to a contender.

Move 4: Begin soliciting offers on Tyler Boucher and Thomas Chabot.

PS - I am a big fan of Chabot. Just hard to not see the writing on the wall.

I think Norris and Chabot are the guys you move out but you’re going to need healthy seasons in order to get even decent value out of them. This isn’t a duchene trade at the moment as currently Norris (like Duchene in 2016-2017) is underperforming. Give it a year and hopefully those guys can put together a productive season and then move them out when their value is up.

Unless you can find a sucker Dorion who will trade 2 1sts for each of them then it just isn’t worth moving them at this point.

Brady and Greig have as a big chunk of their game is based on it (and both could still use more muscle). But Chabot, Norris, Timmy...these guys need more strength. In Chabot's case, he has needed it since being drafted, and has had more than enough time to get there.

100% agreed.

JBD, Thomson, and to an extent Batherson, as well.

They can't move Chabot instead of Chychrun. Chabot is at the lowest point of his career and is signed for 4 more years at 8M per. If another team would trade for him, Ottawa would likely have to retain or take back a bad contract. Without doing either, he is either untrade-able, or he is only trade-able for a very soft return.

A good activity with players is to ask yourself, if they were a free agent July 1st, would they be able to get their current contract on the open market? I don't think Chabot gets 8M x 4 with a 10-team NTC. Also, his real money AAV starting next season is 9.5M, which will be a factor for some teams as there are quite a few budget teams who do not spend to the cap.

Also, why would Chychrun extend here? The only reason there is a chance he might is because of the hometown connection. Looking at everything else, it makes absolutely no sense for him to prioritize staying. It's a terrible fit on the ice because they already have 3 top 4 LHD. They are locked into a failed roster with little to no way to move out players in trades that make any sense. Chychrun spent his entire career already with hardly any playoff hockey. It is unreasonable to expect him to stay.

Then if he doesn't really want to stay, the ask is probably top 2 D money. That would be 8 years, 9.5M, NMC, signing bonuses. If he wants to stay, the ask is probably 8x8.XX with signing bonuses, and some sort of NMC or NTC.

I have a memory of the last two years and no one does jack shit defensively. And I see the new GM and management team worried about the room and the attitude of the players… some times the proof is in the pudding. And it looks like these guys didn’t learn a damn thing for half a decade.

I agree last year was the time to fire him though IF he needed to be hired in the first place.

Chabot and Chychrun to Calgary for Weegar and Andersson.
We would have to add another player to make that deal happen but I can dream??
