all it takes is for two+ teams to want him. Then it becomes more about getting him over the other bidder. With his cap hit and scoring pedigree there is definitely going to be a market for him. I don't think the sens have genuinely explored trading him yet tho.

Would be crazy if they hadn't explored the option. This salary cap issue has been looming for the entire summer and the noose has been tightening since training camp.

2 second round picks
Would Pinto be a larger contribution than Kubalik + whatever we could bring in to help the team with 2 second round picks at the deadline?

Keep everyone, use the 1.7M space we have now to improve the team by bringing in players. Let Pinto sit out the year.

His buyout was higher than that because he has a backloaded contract, so the Senators have to pay back the 500k they originally saved against the cap. Capfriendly's calculator doesn't allow for archived buyouts, but it would be a bit above 1M a year. Additionally, you can add the replacement cost of 775k+ because Joseph is projected to play in the NHL as one of the skaters. So in theory, a buyout would have saved very little money.

You're also operating under the false idea that there was adequate planning around the cap throughout the offseason, or whatever plans or backup plans they had didn't completely fall apart. Something lead to the cap being completely mismanaged.
Pinto would be Joseph's replacement, under the current roster construction. We have 12F, you minus out Joseph and his buyout and the money works perfectly to give Pinto his $2M.

I honestly don't think the plan was to trade or offload Joseph. He's very versatile and I'm a firm believer that you never sell low on a player unless you're convinced he's never going to rebound, kinda like Matt Murray.

Sens aren't going to be trading Joseph, or they shouldn't be.

He's much, much better than viewed on here. Even last season he was a perfectly fine bottom 6 player.

He's overpaid by a small amount, and has a very real chance to prove more than worth that contract.

35 point, 14-15 minute a night PK ace who plays with tenacity and a nonstop motor who can keep up offensively with a top 6 role

I was worried about moving Joseph because of his role on the PK and likelihood he'd bounce back, so far that seems to be proven a valid concern, nice to see him playing well

I think Kubalik and Brannstrom are the best options to move, both are on one year deals so could be viewed as good pump and dump options or guys you extend for a lower tier team, which opens up suitors and should mean we get something back rather than paying to dump them.

I'm not sure either would have much/any value around the league.

Not because either are awful players, but because of their roles and contracts

Depending on what pintos cap hit ends us being would like us to flip kubalik for a cheaper bottom 6 forward

Since removing kubalik+chartier gives us about 3.2 million in cap

Ya, I'm not expecting much, if we were talking about at the deadline I think you get a 3rd or depending on the market and whether your willing to retain, maybe a 2nd for either guy, but right now a 4th is probably based case, and likely less given our lack of any leverage.

Both guys would imo be excellent depth adds for playoff teams looking to get a low cost boost. Brannstrom might scare off some teams for a playoff push given his size though.

Put Kubalik on waivers and if he isn’t claimed then put Brannstrom on waivers and if he isn’t claimed then we need to add a sweetener to move one or both.

He should, if he was traded in the summer. Now he will not unfortunately. Teams know the Sens are in a bind, and will want to be paid to help them out.
I think he will have value to someone. Might not be much but they shouldn't have to attach a sweetener for him. He is a ufa to be and is on a cheap contract. Maybe they only get a late pick or a prospect but someone in the west should be open to a deal for him.

Moving Kubalik really seems like the best option.

Tkachuk - Stützle - Giroux
Joseph - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Tarasenko
Kelly - Kastelic - Macewen

With Chartier, Smejkal as call up options that looks pretty darn good and balanced.

Trade Kubalik is the play here

Floater

Perfect money freed up for Pinto swap 2.5M for DK for 2.5M to Pinto

Wow…Does Pinto have an impending expiration date?

Wait for Norris to come back into the line up, and see how he holds up and wait for him to play at least 10 games to be sure he is healthy…meanwhile Greig slides into the third line Center position (not a big drop off from Pinto I would suggest) and then solve the cap issue and sign Pinto… there is no need to rush this, getting Norris back and playing regularly is the front burner issue, not signing Pinto at some of the high costs being suggested Is a back burner issue.

I hope so. Would be alright with pretty much a neutral trade. Teams know Ottawa is in a bind.

Its a results based league . If the decision is based on the 3 games to start the season. Joseph vs Kubalik. Joseph has been more visible , which is somewhat expected due to his speed, and high energy play and he has scored 2 goals. Kubalik has not been close to as visible and he does not have the results on the scoreboard.
Brannstrom has been more or less as expected as a bottom pair defenseman. He has been fine but not great. The 2m Brannstrom AAV doesn't stretch far and really only offers a band aid moneywise.
Joseph has stood out in a good way more than any of the three.

(2m,2.5,2.95)
I am still ok with moving on from 1 of the 3. Its not a good look for Dorion regardless of the choice he ultimately, after closing in on 3 months , makes. The team will survive and thrive with any decision. The worst of this is the optics for Dorion imo.

There is probably a solution in there somewhere.
I was looking through rosters this morning and there is no team where I see Kubalik as a fit (other than here ironically). Brannstrom I could possibly see a team grab off waivers. Tough situation.

I mean I think Kubalik and be replaced with Greig on the third line.
No brainer at this point
Dorion has to stop seeing Kubalik as the prize for losing DeBrincat
The prize was the cap space to sign Tarasenko
Trade Kubalik for a late draft pick or whatever with no cap implications and Sign Pinto asap
