It’s crazy how much better this team would be with another top 4D and a winger for Stützle. You’d be able to keep Tkachuk with Norris and Batherson and at least have two lines going every night (and leave Greig in the bottom six where he’s much better), and then a really solid top 4 with Sanderson not lugging around Hamonic.

This is what happens when you have garbage tier management for so long.

We have a few good to great players but everything else is mediocre to poor.

Dumping the incompetence was a good first step but that doesn't make you good, it just stops the downward spiral. Getting back to good will take a long time.

Lmao the urge to deny deny everything around Tkachuk is pretty funny. How many times have we been told that Tkachuk wants to win in Ottawa while avoiding the reality that he is not winning in Ottawa right now and that’s why these rumors won’t go away?

No way he’s traded mid-season but this weekly Tkachuk rumor circus is annoying already.

The rumours don't go away because GMs like Drury would kill to get their hands on Tkachuk and writers like Larry Brooks are happy to serve as a mouthpiece.

This "rumour" was immediately shot down by every reporter Ottawa has access to. It's not even a rumour - it's one GMs wet dream put in print.

I mean that could be it.

If it is something like Trouba to CBJ for a bad contract like Gudbranson that puts them in a much better position to deal for Brady because it doesn't have to be cap in/out, which could become very convoluted.

Also, the most logical piece for Brady, Lafreniere, does not have a very high cap hit to offset the cap hit of Brady. So moving Trouba out completely, or with only taking back a much smaller bad contract gives the Rangers more flexibility to deal with Ottawa.

Sure, except Garrioch himself said another losing season and the rumours would be true last summer. Mendes also talked about the possibility and how you can’t begrudge the player at that point. Scanlan wrote an article about it and said he gives it a year.

The rumours have no truth to them while Ottawa is fighting for a playoff spot. Not like these things are just completely out of thin air though.

If Lafreniere is the “main” piece coming back, it’d be a tricky trade to make this year since his new deal doesn’t kick in until next summer. This year his cap hit is just 2.325M.

With that said, I don’t believe that any Tkachuk trade would happen until the draft in the scenario that he does want out.

I would have to know what Mendes said to comment on his side of this.

But Garrioch and Scanlan writing pieces about the possibility of a trade are not proof that any of this is real. They exist downstream of non-information. Ryan Whitney talks out of his ass on a podcast and every writer in need of content writes their piece about it. Some local blogger gets traction writing about their team having interest and every writer in need of content writes their piece about it. Chris Drury uses Larry Brooks to declare his interest and every writer in need of content writes their piece about it.

It's annoying that this has become a monthly occurrence, but the fact that we have this cycle of rumour-then-denial does not mean that there's ever been any substance to one of these rumours (or "rumour", in the most recent case).

Of course they aren’t proof that it’s real. Mendes was purely speculating.

My point is that it’s not nonsense drummed up by everyone else for nothing. Even on the Ottawa side, the reporters who denied it would happen last summer acknowledged it as a possibility should things go south this year. Now that things are going south, the answer is “Brady Tkachuk wants to win in Ottawa”. But the question has never been does Brady want to win in Ottawa, it’s what does Brady want if winning in Ottawa continues to evade him?

And no one is answering that question for a reason. And honestly there no need to, the season isnt over. Just bc other teams are taking advantage of it it doesn’t mean it stems from nothing at all. But that is my opinion and only time will tell.

It opens the door to move Brady for Lafreniere+Picks and Prospects without having to include multiple other players to balance out the salary cap.

As someone else pointed out, Lafreniere's cap hit is only 2.325M. The Rangers currently have 1.3M in space. So if they clear about 5M in the Trouba trade, they can do Brady for Lafreniere straight up as a base.

We could do worse I suppose. He looked great in the playoffs and doesn’t play on their first unit PP, so his production might improve here.

These trades are usually underwhelming though
