Haven’t been on capfriendly in a while… are we in a position to have to make a player transaction in order to fit Grieg back into lineup?

Hope that sending down highmore clears the needed room. Thank goodness for Grieg ELC. And hope this gives Kubalik some time before Pinto is back to find better production and up his trade value!

I believe we are currently compliant. Kastelic is on LTIR.

We don't have any scratches up front. I assume they don't want to risk sending JBD down as he might get claimed this time. I think if it gets to a point where they have to send down a D, they might send down Brannstrom. He would have a higher chance of clearing due to how few teams have 2M, and it would also free up a few hundred k extra of cap since the Senators would get back 1.125M, and the F recalled is probably in the 775k-1M range.

Seems like Chabot might be out for some time pending an MRI.

That would resolve any cap issues going forward since he could go back on LTIR.

If Chabot is out for the season (or close to it), they should acquire a pending UFA 4/5 defenseman. Something like the Zadorov trade. Prices are low now. They can rent the player, and if there is no extension or winning streak, possibly recoup the asset by flipping the player at the deadline.

Is there an injury update?

Acquiring pending UFA's makes no sense for a team that's last in the conference.

If Chabot is out, it makes sense.

Go after a UFA in a trade now while prices are depressed (Zadorov for 3rd+ as an example). Test drive them, and get the inside track on signing an extension. They can be flipped at the deadline to recoup or gain on the pick that was originally given up. If last year was any indication, prices will be highest at the deadline.

Of course, that comes with risk. The player could get hurt.

Branny for Broberg?

There would have to be a cap component to the deal to make it cap in/cap out for Edmonton. Such as Ottawa taking on another contract, or Ottawa retaining on Brannstrom. They may have to bring in a third team as well to get Brannstrom down to 863k.

They could do Foegele (750k retained)+Broberg for Brannstrom+Depth Forward. That would be cap in/cap out for both sides.

I don't think the Senators will qualify Brannstrom. He will be arbitration eligible. He will not get enough that the Senators can walk away from his settlement, but he might get an overpayment due to having a projected 250+ NHL games under his belt.

Of course you want to win, but I think realistically part of right now is looking forward to moves that need to be made to prepare the team for both trade deadline and next season. If they can flip Brannstrom for a different young defender in a change of scenery move and audition them, that would be worth doing.

In the case of Broberg, it would give the Senators 1.5 years to figure out if they have something in him before they have to decide whether or not to qualify him.

I guess if they could flip it out when the time comes it could make sense, just seems a bit strange considering they're the last placed team in the East and aren't really playing for anything.

It's probably premature, but at some point soon, decisions need to be geared around next year and the years that follow, not this one.
