Rewatch last nights game. JBD was very good and covered up a few of Chychrun’s gaffes. He is getting better and better.

Just needs to make decisions a bit quicker. Once he has the confidence and reps to know exactly what he wants to do with the puck he could be a steady support defensive dman.

Some added strength will help him as well.

I noticed that too. JBD was holding his own and not hurting the team. Didn’t panic clear as much either, maybe the game is finally slowing down for him

I wonder if GreiGate causes the Leafs to pull the trigger on Tanev, who they were rumoured to be in on.

Reilly at 6+ games could not come at a worse time for them. They have a 4 game road trip with 3 games spread across four days. Giordano is injured.

They may enter a road trip with both Lajoie and Lagesson dressed and playing in a very difficult and tight schedule. A losing skid would likely put them out of the playoffs.

This is the kind of scenario where if they talked to Calgary or another team about a defenseman, they might cave and pay the price because after the road trip because Reilly got baited into taking himself out, their season might be at risk. Better to make the deal now and get a few extra wins than to make the deal after falling out of the playoffs and needing to dig themselves out of a hole.

Not to mention, Toronto could theoretically flip whoever they acquire to a different team if they still implode even after picking up a rental.

So if you don't want Ottawa to give up a 1st for Tanev, maybe you're a bit happier if Greig causes Toronto pull the trigger and acquire him.

Not sure he has the skill to do what he needs to do with the puck. I don’t see it man. He’s just like. Not that good. His good games are “fine”. His bad games he’s a turnstile

Not sure either. I think he could make it as a low- event steady RD who complements a puck mover.

His decision making and feet are too slow currently. Holds onto pucks and gets into trouble at times.

If he has mostly fine games, and minimal turnstile games, he can definitely play at the NHL level. If he gets there is still up I'm the air.

Chabot. He’s part of the culture here.he’s our Kyle Lowry.

Trade Chychryn to Winnipeg for 2 x 1st round picks and use those picks and smart space to acquire a top pairing RD for Sandy - Chabot plays with Zub and sort out that bottom positing with 2 legit NHL Dman
Lowry has that dawg in him. His whole role is taking the hard hits and drawing offensive fouls.

Chabot doesn't play with that kind of grit or IQ. Only resemblance between them is their tenure.

I agree with your assessment. I think more reps and more strength his play will continue to improve and he can be a serviceable RD... When he keeps it simple he is at his best. His puck moving has to improve decisions and time. He doesn't have the best feet so he has to be smart and good positionally.

Given he is on the fringe his clock may run out and he may get passed by someone with more upside.

Chabot is tough as nails. Carrying the puck for the worst team in the league, taking bad passes from bad defensive partners, playing 27+ minutes every night and coming back for more and sticking around - Chabot’s a stud. He’s the kinda guy teams need to win, the dedication and team first attitude is what made Lowry Lowry, his commitment to the franchise is what’s remembered

We have very different definitions of tough mate.

Chabot didn't stick around out of some good will towards the team. Securing the bag is a major factor. He had the highest D-Man contract in Sens history at the time of his signing.

I respect that he was willing to extend here for 8 years but his play has definitely declined and he has to bounce back from whatever crap habits DJ instilled in him, but nothing really screams willing to do what it takes to win from him or the notion of tough.

How's this for a deal between now and the deadline?

To Columbus:
Kubalik
Brannstrom

To Ottawa:
Peeke
Texier

The main motivation for CBJ here would be to get out of Peeke's final two years by taking on Kubalik's expiring contract. We would be taking a bit of a risk with 2 more years of Peeke at $2.75M but the hope would be that his simple more defensive-leaning/stay at home style can stabilize a pairing with either Chabot or Chychrun. Ultimately, it would bring balance to our pairings by moving LD Brannstrom out for RD Peeke in without it costing an arm and a leg in assets or cap space.

Brannstrom and Texier are included so that forwards and defenseman stay balanced before and after the trade (Columbus doesn't really have room for more forwards otherwise). Both guys are in a similar situation being on expiring RFA contracts and having their development stall a little bit after being hyped/having some pedigree as a prospect. I could see both players possibly benefit from a change of scenery. Texier could play center or wing and plays a complimentary game that can slot in anywhere from the 2nd to 4th line. Columbus also has the opposite problem than we do in that they have more RD on their roster than LD, so they also create more balance by moving out a RD to bring in a LD.

Lastly, cap hits are almost equal, we would shed $225k in the deal for this year. However, the biggest cap implication as mentioned (and likely most important to consider) is Peeke's 2 remaining years after this one at $2.75M.

that’s fine. I define tough not as Ryan Reeves - I define it as the guy that battles for every puck, skates the hardest minutes for the team, does everything the coach asks for and never cheats the fans.

Chabot is a stud - all this “I know better” attitude Ottawa fans have developed since Sanderson showed up is stupid and shows immaturity. We are allayed to have 2 good LD - we don’t need to choose one or degrade the other because one is better. We need them both

You need a lot of excellent - TOUGH players to win the Cup and I’d take Chabot any day. And if you knew what was good for this team you would too

I'd trade Chabot still over Chychryn. We need RD help badly.
Keep all 4 of our main dmen and fill out the two RD spots

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-X
Chychrun-X

Getting Demelo and trading for someone competent like a Tvr solves the problem too while making sure we have someone elite on the ice always. That being said I would consider trading Chychrun if he wants a stupid number for his extension

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Demelo
Chychrun-TVR

I say this too. Demelo lyubushkin. Tanev ruhwedel. Tanev miller? Demelo Miller. Lyibushkin dumba. Roy Bortuzzo? Hakanpaa bortuzzo/miller/walker. Carrier miller? Carrier dumba. Roy carrier?

Some combos

One of the biggest negatives of Chabot is that he isn't very tough though.

Like if he played his size or his game actually had snarl, or if he was tough defensively or if he had good mental poise. But he is tough in none of those ways.

Anyway I like Chabot but he isn't tough especially not all caps tough.

But he was given pretty shitty mentors and unfavourable development standards so I cut him some slack and hopefully Martin and Alfredsson can rebuild him to be mentally tough again.

Under DJ it was really Chabot who suffered the most while the forwards went around doing whatever they wanted which would end up in Chabot fishing the puck out of his own net.

That shit would get to anyone over 5-6 years.

Not worth it for CLB to give up Texier for this. They aren't in cap trouble and Texier has only played half a year since returning from a long absence... he still has the ability to be a good middle 6er for them.

I like the idea of trading Branny/Kubalik for RFAs and depth players. Some possible examples include Texier, Kakko, Fabbro, Kunin, Hayton, Lundestrom, Lizotte, Rasmussen, Grundstrom, Zadina, Jones.

Since the new year, it hasn't really been close as to who has been better, and who Martin thinks is better and puts out there.

I personally don't understand wanting to keep Chychrun over Chabot, especially when he's going to cost the same on the cap. One has looked quite good for a while, the other hasn't.

Even when he's on the left side like last game, he's still getting ~5 minutes less than Chabot

I'm fine with pretty much any option minus dumba and hakanpaa.

It just makes more sense to shore up the defense and make korpisolo look more competent and fill out the forwards where we can. We have 5 top 6 forwards. We have pinto and grieg who can be considered really close or locks depending on who you talk too. We also got Joseph who let's face it is going to go a bit back to earth. Our forwards are actually in a pretty good spot. Spend all the extra money on defense.

Tkachuk -Stutzle-Giroux
X-Norris-Batherson
Grieg-Pinto-Joseph
Kelly and training camp battle for last 2 spots

Lowry has that dawg in him. His whole role is taking the hard hits and drawing offensive fouls.

Chabby was a monster in the world juniors in high pressure games

I am curious to see these guys in the playoffs and we will really know who has the 'dawg' in them and who doesnt

Chabot is a better player overall. Chychrun is overrated IMO. He's a nice player to have but I feel people are high on him more because he's more flashy offensively and he's the shiny new toy with the Ottawa connection. There's no way we should be paying him 8M$. He's not been on a good fit on this defense and he's not as good as Chabot at transitioning and just general effectiveness in his play.

Chabot is a good two-way defensemen if he could get a little help from his partner. He needs to be used properly and with a good partner, that's been the biggest issue pretty much since Demelo left. He needs to have a guy who he can rely on defensively so he himself can push offense more and play more freely.

To me it's a no brainer, I wouldn't think twice and I'd keep Chabot.

One of the things I used to like about Chabot was that he was chippy and played with a bit of an edge.

He had a bit of a temper.

I haven’t seen that aspect in his play for a long time.
