I think goalies know they can cash in on a good year.

Murray was bad before we acquired him. That contract was something his agent pulled out of his bass.

Talbot has always been all over the place. Korpisalo the same.

Also there aren’t many goalie positions available. Sooner or later that have to take the job offered to them. Can we pay a guy 2 mil to play .905 hockey? I think so.

Ridtolaijen???????

He’s f***ing brutal man. Like truly brutal
You're right, goalies know they can cash in on a good year, which is why they might avoid a place where lately goalies have been hung out to dry. Hopefully Martin can change that perception, but it's been 5 years of our team putting goalies in a tough spot, so they likely don't see Ottawa as the place they can reliably have a good year to cash in on. That's the crux of my point. We simply have a reputation for making life tough on goalies.

Seriously. No more big goalie contracts for a while. If one guy isn't working, just fling some other shit at the wall.

Seems like any decently paid goalies in the last like 15 or so years haven't been a positive contributor for the most part other than Anderson, and even he was paid too much for too long on his last one.

Korpisalo, Forsberg, Talbot, Murray, Nilsson, Condon, Hammond, Lehner, Elliot, Leclaire, Gerber, Emery. HM to Anderson's last contract.

Some of those guys played well on low salary prior to their biggest contracts with the team, but did a single one of them other than Anderson play well after getting their biggest contract with the team? I guess in fairness the teams were pretty middling throughout, but that's basically 2 decent pay contracts that worked out, and both were to Anderson.

Goalies are voodoo it seems now, other than the top 6-8.

As bad as Ristoleinen? Wtf are doing here people?

Chabot has played only 25 games has 15pts
50pt pace his career average. Despite less ice time & PP minutes.
+ player

The last 10 games he’s looked like the #1 we pay him to be again, this nonsense of shitting on Chabot has got to stop.
He’s not a perfect player, he’s a really good one though.
He had a bad year, along with everyone else.
FFS let it go.

Chabot. He’s part of the culture here.he’s our Kyle Lowry.

Trade Chychryn to Winnipeg for 2 x 1st round picks and use those picks and smart space to acquire a top pairing RD for Sandy - Chabot plays with Zub and sort out that bottom positing with 2 legit NHL Dman

I’m saying it won’t stop a goalie from cashing in here. Like korpisalo did.

Yes. Man. Worse than chabot this year. He’s horrid.

I'm saying goalies might start thinking a 3*3.5 deal with a strong defensive team will be more beneficial to them casing in long term than a 4x5 deal that gets bought out after year 1 and results in them struggling to find their next gig,

The price for us to entice them to sign here will continue to rise until we break away from our reputation as a goalie graveyard,

Trade Deadline:
To anyone: Tarasenko, Kubalik & Brannstrom ($9.5 mil out)
To Ott: picks/prospects

Summer Deal:
To Philly: Chabot LD ($8 mil out)
To Ott: Ristolainen RD & Laughton LW ($8.1 mil in)

- Ristolainen fills a top 4 RD spot
- Laughton fills a bottom six LW spot
- Sens likely need to decide between Chabot & Chychrun

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux $23
Norris - Pinto - Batherson $16
Laughton - Greig - Joseph $7
Kelly - Kastelic - MacEwan $4 = $50

Sanderson - Ristolainen $13
Chychrun - Zub $9
Kleven - JBD/Hamonic $ 3 =$25

Korpisalo - Forsberg $7
($50+$25+$7= $82 mil - includes dead cap)
If we trade for ristolainen, and Laughton is the “reward” for taking him on, we might as well move to Utah. That would be the worst decision in pro sports.

Where is this coming from?

No one liked my idea of a 775k 1 year followed by 8x5.7M for Pinto in October.

How would everyone feel about that type of long term deal now?
Thats too much for Pinner. $3.75-4.5 on long-term deal.

Martin has quietly been fixing Chabot. His play is improving and is clearly better than Chychrun right now.
Yes, Chabot's play has been improving over the last several games. Except for blowing a tire followed by a bad pass/giveaway by Stutzle that led to the Leafs 1st goal last night, I thought Chabot played a good game last night.

Did Martin reduce Stutzle's ice time last night? I got the impression I wasn't seeing him as much.

Also, any updates on Sanderson? Is there any more info other than lower body injury?

Stutzle played 16:37, one of his lowest of the year. Leaned on Pinto at 20:14, and Norris at 18:52 more.

Looked like just playing who was going last night. Stutzle wasn't smooth and connected like he needs to be to push the play. Didn't try to do too much and cost the team though. Slowly improving his B games.

That would be a great extension for Pinto.

I don't think we get 8 years with him at that number. I think he would want more for giving up UFA years.

He has 4 RFA years left (2 arb eligible). I could see a 5 year deal being the sweet spot where he is locked up long enough that they don't have to worry about negotiating soon, but the player isn't selling low on too many UFA years. Maybe something like 5x5.XXM.

Hard to choose for me. Both have liabilities and lack physicality.

However, I would prefer to keep them both and run 3 pairs with Chabot, Chychrun and Sanderson getting equal ES time at LD. We just need to shore up the RD side with 2 more players.

Zub is fine. Brannstrom has some skating and puck skills but lacks size and strength. JBD does not look like a competent #6 D to me.

Perhaps 8 X $5M = $40M to set him up for life. It might be enough.

5M gets the Senators 5-6 years at most. If he was willing to lock in at 5M for 8 years, I think they would have jumped on that already. That would buy up 4 UFA years.

The way Pinto's side likely looks at it is that if he puts up 20-30 goals and 60+ points next year while playing top 6 minutes, he will have earned the Norris contract. Team structure is always going to factor in.

2-3 years is 3M-4M. 4-6 years is 5M-6M, 7-8 years is 6.5M-7.5M. The sweet spot is 4-6 because nobody gets burned too badly in either direction if Pinto either fails to live up to expectations or exceeds them.

Since coming back, he plays similar minutes to Norris at ES with tougher deployment. He is point per game (all ES). Killing it on faceoffs. It's a small sample size, but it reinforces what was already expected about Pinto's potential. His camp likely looks at it like he has a high chance of getting 8x8 after the 2024-25 season, so any 8 year offer has to make sense. 5M is too far away from. 8M.

My guess would be some variation of 6x6. It seems like the best middle ground for both sides.

Rewatch last nights game. JBD was very good and covered up a few of Chychrun’s gaffes. He is getting better and better.
