He's 21 and playing behind Fox and Trouba. Pretty hard to play top 4 when that's the case. No he will never be a point producer like Chychrun but I think he's trending towards a zub like shut down rd who compliments an offensive lefty. He's big and he can skate and make a first pass. I could see him being A methot like d man and big D typically take longer to develop. Ottawa doesn't need 3 offensive ld men. Either chychrun or Chabot is going to go if they fill the hole on RD with it then so be it. He's exactly the type of player they should be targeting. Big physical d cores win games.
I don’t think he has the smarts to get to Zub level but I still think it’s a good move. He can surely ride shotgun with an above average LD.

Gotta pay to play. Weegar is a stud on a pretty decent AAV at the most in demand position in the league as RD. Brannstrom isn't worth much and will be gone soon, so I probably could have just left him off, but at least it's a body to go in for Weegar.
Not overpay to play though.

Well, I admit to not knowing in this case then. I assumed Weegar alone would carry a fair bit more value than Norris, at least at present.

I actually thought my proposal may have been a little low for Weegar since Brann is basically a throw in.

Surely, we must be the ones needing to add to get it done, no?

How many RDs are moved each year on average? Just curious.

People might remember one or two that were acquired for a reasonable return. But, I think the tricky part is that don't become available very often. I think if there's a few on the market this year, or this summer even, I'd think that isn't a typical or average year.

I'm not trying to make an argument about value here. Just wondering about the supply & availability per average year.

Wish I had some stats to go along with that and more than just my memory though.

Monohan went for a late first. Calgary just traded a center. Weegar is older and reached his potential. Norris is still growing. Squeeze Calgary. If they don't like it. Fair.

I Guess I hold Weegar in higher regard in general and not sure how Monahan's value is relevant? Weegar is not a player I think they'd want to move anyways, but he's one of the best RD out there and there seems to be some inkling that he might be available at some point.

The whole debate with Norris is a tough one. I like the player, I think he'll bounce back and I said the best play is to keep him for now, but I see where some people are coming from with injury concerns or long term performance concerns relative to his big contract. The option of shifting him to wing probably alleviates the high paid center crunch that I think will come with Pinto.

What about a trade centered around Norris going to Calgary. I'd be looking for Tanev (w extension), Yegor Sharangovich + a good prospect; I might flip one of our goalie prospects for Wolf or would be asking for Zary assuming Coronato would be off the table. Other AHL pieces could be involved .

Calgary gets a younger but firmly established C under control.. to go along with 30+ Huberdeau and Kadri

Without the emo of not trading Norris; what would be an appropriate return?

Cal: Norris
Ottawa: Rasmus Anderson

Or

ott: Rasmus Anderson, Nazem Kadri
Cal: Norris, Boston 1st, Brannstrom

?? Rasmus might be the better player overall TBH

I like Rasmus but he's only got 2 more years left after this one, so the same conversations being had about Chychrun now start next year for Rasmus.

There wouldn't be a conversation. He's a rd. We resign him. The only reason there is a conversation about Chychrun is because we have 3 ld that can play in the top 2 pairs.

yes true, I’d hope he’d want to extend and play with Jake Sanderson and be on a winning team, I’d sssme we’d extend him at about $5.5 -6 million for 5-7 years. He’s perfect age and what he does and minute played. Complimentary top pairing RD which let Chabot and Zub slot to the 2nd pair where they both belong and could excel

He is getting big money on his next extension. He is a RHD who plays 24 minutes a night and is good at it. There are not many of those in the league.

On our team where Chabot and Sanderson both make 8M, the floor for an Andersson extension would be 8Mx8M. It could possibly be higher depending on whether he has a take it/leave it attitude with staying here, and how high the cap gets for 25-26.

The rumoured number for Hanifin in Calgary was 7.5M. Hanifin will probably be looking for something around or even higher than that when he is up for an extension with Calgary at the end of next season.

If we trade for Andersson we are renting him for a year, because at the end of 24-25 we're going to have to flip him for assets if he doesn't want to re-sign, or if he wants to play out the year before deciding. Weegar makes more Sens because he is not only a fit, but also cost controlled at a great cap hit.

He would be an excellent player to bring in, no doubt about that. Potentially worth the risk. I like Weegar a little more out of the 2, but he's also older, paid more, and locked up well into his 30's.

With the rising cap, I wonder about Andersson's next contract. $5.5-6 seems low to me, but either way, more about convincing him to stay.

Kadri makes no sense. If they retained and took Korpisalo, then you could maybe think about it - but it would still be very difficult to pull the trigger on because at least with Korpisalo you can buy him out. Kadri's signing bonuses and longer term make a buyout pointless.
Yeah, no thanks. He's a f***ing rat, he's already old and has 6 years left or whatever. Although, yeah taking dead weight in Korpisalo is 16 million, then they retain half of the rat's contract, so it becomes very cheap.

You’re right he’s going to be $7 million or more. If they can afford it I’d add, the D needs to be figured out before this team takes another step

Seems like a lot of people are down on Norris. He's pacing at almost 50 points coming off of major surgery where the focus would have been rehab not strength training. At 8M AAV and with projected cap growth, his contract isn't outrageous. The center position is a huge strength for us. No need to move any of them.

What we need to sort out is the LD position and how we get a decent RD out of the LD strength

I thought I saw an article from BG saying Forsberg would be ready after the break... am I wrong in saying we can't fit him under the cap without a more or two? Seems that way from capfriendly but maybe I read it wrong.

We can fit him in by sending someone like MacEwen down again, or we just put Hamonic, or Sanderson (what happened to him?) on LTIR.

I am a bit surprised we only had to play 1 game short this year with only 12k in cap space, but such is our luck with injuries.

If we activate Forsberg we will to free up 742 k after sending mando down. Most likely Mac gets waived or Hamonic goes from IR to LTIR

An intriguing bridge option on RD - Radko Gudas. Playoff warrior coming off of a finals appearance last year who brings exactly what our back end lacks - grit.

Signed for two more years in Anaheim, who won’t be contenders. He’s somehow a +17 there on a terrible team - that would put him ahead of everyone on Ottawa.

He could make an impact here, as he currently has more goals than all of our blue liners but Chychrun and Sanderson, and would definitely give Brady some relief in the toughness department.
