Yes, I agree with the bolded. We don't have much history or info to go on with our new owners/organization. If they wait for free agency which seems reasonable on the surface, I hope they are talking to player agents to get a feel for who's out there and who's interested.

From what one can put together it seems the strategy is roster flexibility and having assets to acquire targetted players. Instead of shopping on July 1 I think the strategy will be to pay prices for specific players (ie Tanev) instead of just shopping for RD on July 1 and getting whatever you can. And I agree with this strategy from Staois - Ottawa is close and needs the right perfect fit for this to get to another level because the slap happy ways of the past and just taking chances on ideas without core values or core principals obviously did not work at all

I remember a rumour earlier in the season that Tanev was willing to sign an extension with Toronto or that Toronto was confident they can sign him. Just from that it seems like there is definitly more going on in the background that we don;t know about. If we do trade for him I suspect extension conversations would have already begun

Brayden Pachal 6'2 205 RD on waivers by LV.

This is the kind of player having Hamonic with a NMC blocks the Sens from picking up.
Pachal was the captain of Prince Albert in his last year junior the year they won the WHL ; a team mate of Parker Kelly. Also captained his AHL team Sliver Knights.

Be nice to claim him and see but between lack of cap space and the aforementioned Hamonic its very unlikely.

If they’re willing to sign now. They’ll be willing to sign in the summer
What if they are willing to sign with multiple teams now and in the summer, but can only sign with one?

To state the obvious, there is a big difference between holding someones exclusive rights and bidding for them on the open market

What about a trade centered around Norris going to Calgary. I'd be looking for Tanev (w extension), Yegor Sharangovich + a good prospect; I might flip one of our goalie prospects for Wolf or would be asking for Zary assuming Coronato would be off the table. Other AHL pieces could be involved .

Calgary gets a younger but firmly established C under control.. to go along with 30+ Huberdeau and Kadri

Without the emo of not trading Norris; what would be an appropriate return?

Yorkie says a significant trade will happen before the deadline. A roster player. His brother is an owner so I’m going to assume that they are aware when a long term player is shopped.

The two guys that make sense based on Yorkies comments lately are Norris and Chych. I say this bc

1) he’s been hyping up norris a bit while he hasn’t been scoring
2) he’s proposed a few times that pinto goes to 2C and Greig fits the bill at 3C.
3) he was adamant that we should trade for chych quite a bit and was very vocal. Hadn’t mentioned a peep lately even with all the rumours.

Now I personally think you keep norris. Move him to wing. And you don’t need a tank anymore. But typical Ottawa can’t wait to lose a trade in a meaningless season.

It won’t be chabot. We all know it. But fans seem to think they will. Let’s discuss this without chabot.

I think Yorkie said not Chychrun or Tarasenko. He said someone that would shock people. I guess for Batherson because Staois said he receive lots of calls for him

I would do this and run

zero chance the flames do this. Sharangovich is a cheaper norris

I haven't caught up on the last few episodes. That being said, York has been saying a big trade will happen for a bit and then when asked who, says Tank, Brann and Kubalik. Which isn't a roster shake up at all.

Rock solid defensive defenseman and has been for years.

Odd to think folks aren't very aware of him.

Like others have said, if it was a short term contract (i.e. 2 years) it could be worth the risk. I think some are just looking at his age and saying no interest. He'd need to come with an extension of course.

If there are better options (younger, just as good, etc.), then sure, go for it.

Yeah his "rock solid defenseman" reputation is what we both know of him - im fine with admitting that I don't EVER watch Calgary or Vancouver, unless they are playing the Sens - but you didn't answer the question or show that you are any more aware of his actual play style than I am....

Can he move guys from in front of the net with his physical prowess? Can he stand guys up at the blueline? Or is he just a defensive stalwart that doesn't necessarily need size to defend?

Not asking you by the way, questions already been answered by others (not really is the answer Im getting).

That kinda old school defensemen don't really work today. He uses his position well and has the size to get positioning and can skate well. Exactly what you want in a defensive guy. Age is a concern though

Tell that the Golden Knights blueliners lmfao... I guess they didn't get the memo..

At the draft:

To Boston
The Detroit/Boston 1st
Kleven
Forsberg(50% retained)

To Ottawa
Extended Ullmark

Yay or nay?

I don't think Ullmark would extend here.

Swayman should be our target. Should have been last summer, but alas.

Fits in with our core age group better and is an RFA.

Trading Norris when his value is at its lowest would be a new level of poor asset management that would make Dorion blush.

but that's not really needed in the current NHL

You say size isnt needed, but how comfortable would you be with zero dmen on your team being above 200lbs in the playoffs? No one would be okay with that, is the right answer.

Not saying he can't be in the know but the minority owners do not have a line to SS when it comes to that stuff. Andlauer is notoriously tight lipped and from what I understand he cut them off from hockey ops completely since day 1. The same was true of the sale process once he had their commitment.

I think it is unlikely that anything York knows is through his brother, especially if it is making it to the radio. Doesn't mean what he is speaking about in this case is untrue, just that there isn't reason to assume he is getting info from his brother.

Note - Spreadsheet was edited to fix a mistake (forgot Tanev). Not sure if you are proposing making two (2) additions to the blueline, or just one (1). It wasn't clear based on what was posted. My bad if your intent was to make just one addition. I can fix that quickly if need be.

I took your roster idea with additions and subtractions and applied the cap hits to them. This spreadsheet is for 2024-25.

Total $89,435,381 (over cap ceiling)

In general, I'm more focused on next season as this season is basically a lost leader. Also, seems more realistic (less fantasy oriented) to include cap hits to determine feasibility of the proposed roster.

Out - JBD and Chychrun retained @ 15% (690k)

In:
Tanev - modest raise, so $5 m
Kaliyev - Current contract expires at end of this season, so $1 m. It's a very modest raise & a guess.
Roy - Current contract expires at end of this season, so $4.50 m. It's a modest raise & a guess.

Other notables:
Pinto - new bridge contract
2nd line LW = TBD, or re-sign Tarasenko at $5m
22 player roster

Thanks for taking the effort to plug things in! Only changes in my eyes would be to not sign Tarasenko, buy-out Hamonic, and send Mackewen to the minors. This should make us compliant.

i didnt say size is not needed. bruising defensemen aren't

Big players who use their size for positing on defense is key

The only logical move if you move chych is either bring home Clarke or make a move for Jiricek.

If it’s between Weager and Chych I’d rather Chych.

Clarke would cost.

Chych (50% retained for both years) + Bos 1st

For

Clarke + Kaliyev

Different ways of going about it of course.

The biggest saving would be to find a less expensive player to replace Tarasenko like you said. Or maybe if the Senators feel like a current player could fill his shoes, they move that player up in the lineup. One possibility for this might be Grieg. Then they would need to fill the void on the 3rd line caused by Grieg's promotion, presumably with a fairly inexpensive player. I have no idea what the Staois is thinking of course.

The cap hit would only need to be reduced by approx. 2 million to become compliant with your additions. Not sure if buying out Hamonic & waiving MacEwan would be enough because $366k would be counted against the cap still with the Hamonic buyout, hence a $733k saving along with whatever is saved with MacEwan. Lots of different ways of going about it though.

Heres how it looks via capfriendly.
