I don't like the idea of trading for an upcoming UFA. If we are going to sign a guy like Roy or Tanev it's probably going to require a dumb overpayment, which is something that's hard enough to swallow on July 1st let alone giving up a quality asset for the privilege.

LA being interested in Chychrun isn't a surprise though. They are starting to realize goaltending may be an issue and no good goalies seem to be available. Only solution then is to add a good defenseman.

Brandt Clarke and Matt Roy for Chychrun would be sweet. We can explore the possibility of re-signing Roy but if we decide to walk away we still get Clarke. They can have Boucher if it seals the deal. :naughty:

If they ever traded Clarke it would be because they don't want to let Roy walk and think Spence will be able to nail down the 3rd pairing RD role long-term.

I'd gladly retain 50% on Chychrun in an attempt to steal Clarke from them. May even throw something extra.

Still pissed we won the last game of the year in 2020/21. Made our pick drop from 8th to 10th. Clarke would be a Senator right now if not for that.

If Lassi Thomson isn't a throw in for some other deal, he might be able to be flipped for another prospect at a similar stage of their career. Something like an upcoming RFA who has either lost or about to lose their waiver exempt status and is potentially a question mark as to whether the team they are currently with are going to qualify them or give them a fresh start somewhere else.

From the 2019 draft Samuel Poulin and Jamieson Rees come to mind. Another option would be someone like Curtis Douglas who I thought the Sens should have given an ELC to anyway. They all add something to the B Sens roster at the very least.

Meh. The bozos in charge would probably still have picked Boucher because he wasn't a "low character guy".

is there a path where we just keep Chychrun? He seems to be doing well with Chabby under Martin now

Is there a path forward where we just get a lower cap RD like a David Savard with 1mill retained and send Branny, JBD and Hamonic packing? Could then put Kleven and instantly you have a lot more size and grit on the blue line while still having a lot of skill?

Bringing in Roy but getting rid of Chychrun seems like a heavy downgrade to me

They'd like the 2nd, would likely not want Brann though, would rather a prospect or another pick
Good old alberta boy like JBD

Goes to show that every slot matters, and every game matters in a tank.

Going into the 2019 draft, it was clear that there were a consensus top 18, and then a pretty clear drop off to the late 1st/early 2nd pool of players. Dallas picked 18th and got the last of the top 18 guys available, Thomas Harley. We picked 19th and got Lassi Thomson.

Trade Deadline:
To Philly: Kubalik LW & Korpisalo G ($6.5 mil out)
To Ott: Laughton LW & Walker RD ($5.65 mil in) (signed)

To Car: Tarasenko RW ($5 mil out)
To Ott: Pesce RD ($4.025 mil in) (signed)
Not sure what you mean by "signed"? I'm guessing you mean they are under contract this year???

Pesce is a UFA this summer. So, the $4.025 m is this year's cap hit. I would imagine he will be making more than $4.025 m next year. I'm not seeing how the Canes would be particularly motivated by this. They'd want to keep a good defenseman for a playoff run you'd think. If they want to bolster scoring, maybe they move picks so they don't subtract from the roster.

Flyers might want a simpler deal and just dangle Laughton to see if they can snag a goalie. That's assuming they don't have other options (i.e., maybe even an internal replacement). I suppose the interest in Korpisalo would be to replace Hart. It's at least based on some logic and better than the Canes deal I suppose - imho. Again, this assumes there aren't better options than Korpisalo.

Chychrun will cost 8M to 9.5M per season, depending on how aggressive he wants to be.

Even on the low end of 8M, that means our top 4 along with another #4 type RHD likely costs around 33M of the cap.

Any solid #4 RHD will cost 4M-5M.

It's doable under the cap, but it would come at the cost of having an inadequate top 9 and possibly having to cheap out on our goalie tandem.

There is also diminishing returns, because if we bring in a RHD like Tanev, he will take minutes away from our current top 4.

I understand you are suggesting bringing in a cheaper RHD, but unless we get lucky like we did with Demelo and a cheaper RHD blossoms into a top 4, any cheap RHD is going to be a 6-7 type who won't factor into the top 4. So what you're basically asking in that scenario is, can we keep our top 4 as is with someone of their offside.

We could go after Tanev or a similar D, and keep Chychrun for 1 year as an own-rental, with the intention being to load up for a playoff run next year. I don't think we can do that given how many major assets we have burned though. If there is no real market for Chabot, we need to move Chychrun to recoup some assets and then use a smaller portion of those to get a more fitting RHD.

Brannstrom + 2nd for Tanev?
Interesting, but I'd really like to know if an extension is being discussed. Senators going for a pure rental at this point would be kind of weird. Not sure if that kind of (extension) info will be available. Don't think including Brannstrom will be that appealing to Calgary though.

Not to take focus away from Melnyk and Dorion and how awful they were, but I'm sure Dorion could have gotten a 1st for Stone. He just valued Brannstrom - who was at his peak value - more highly.

LOL. IF you're talking about Montreal sending money to the Jets, I don't think Jets ownership really needs help.

David Thomson info below.

Most of these owners are rich.

Take this with a grain and salt. I read in another forum that we have an agreement with Calgary, with an extension in place. But Tanev politely declined

Flyers possibly going to trade Scott Laughton.

He's someone I could see Staois being very interested in.

Signed for 2 more years at 3M. Can play C but is better at LW. Only 20P/50GP this year but had 43P/78GP last year.

Could see something based around Boucher + BOS 1st + more.
Too much for Laughton.

Moving Joseph for a 3rd line vet is the definition of a lateral move.
It's a move that does not make our team better. Trade Kubalik for Laughton!
