A bunch of these make no sense from the other teams perspective, why are LA or Phi trading away top 4 D when they are hoping to make some noise in the playoffs?

It's TheHockeyWriters, which basically makes it as credible as a post on a fan message board.

Which isn't to say there aren't a lot of smart fans who know a lot, but its basically fan blogs and it should be viewed accordingly.

a lot of talk of Tarasenko being traded, that’s great and he should have lots of value BUT are we considering he asked for a full NMC for a reason?
He seems quite close to his kids and family, and very well may choose to excercise his right to go absolutely nowhere until the offseason.

Good news is he already played in New York so probably won’t want to go there. Bad news is Toronto is probably the next closest city and it would be gross for him to force us to trade him there.

He apparently turned down a long-term deal in Ottawa with a similar AAV to the one he signed.

It's a lot more likely that he takes the opportunity to go to a contender and audition for a big contract.

While he has been good this year, he hasn't done enough to guarantee a big long-term deal. Being an important part of a big playoff run puts him in a good position to cash in on July 1st.

He also has a full NTC last year, he didn't refuse to go to a new city, he waived for one of the teams who wanted him. I don't think it's logical to assume he won't want to be traded.

Every time I read The Hockey Writer articles I am disappointed in them as the writers are amateurs who write trite and superficial columns and do not follow the Ottawa Senators team, thus have poor knowledge of our players. I must stop reading them.

I'd be thrilled if we could get a late 1st for Tarasenko, but I'm expecting a 2nd as the main piece with another small value piece attached.

I don't think he's been as impressive as his stats would suggest, and I imagine other team's scouts can tell he's lost a step.

I would take Lafrenniere before the NYR first round draft pick in 2024.

Getting Lafreniere for Tarasenko would be an Erat for Forsberg tier trade relatively speaking...

They would want something else like a top prospect or a 1st round pick. They would have to be super low on Lafreniere since they have him cost controlled for another year before they have to worry about arbitration.

I could see them making Kakko available for a rental. It moves out cap and saves them draft picks. He is arbitration eligible next year, which might make qualifying him difficult if their cap is tight and they don't want to risk him getting an overpayment.

What's going on with Kakko? 3 pts in 21 games, compared to 18 g and 40 in 82 last year, I'd blame it on the injury, but he's only played the one game since returning.

I would give them the first round pick we are getting from Detroit (likely the Boston pick) for Lafreniere; but not our own likely top 5 pick. I would add Kubalik if they have any interest in him, or a second round pick. However, I doubt that NYR will trade Lafreniere at this time.

I would do Kakko for a second round pick too.

Remember Sanderson 7 mil raise kicks in next year tooo.
between all the dead cap hits coming off the books, and the salary cap increase, we should be fine.

We're at about 74 mil with this to start next year:

Tkachuk-Stu-Giroux
Greig-Norris-Batherson
xxx-Chartier-Joseph
Kelly-Kastelic-MacEwen

Chabot-Chychrun
Sanderson-Zub
xxx-JBD
Hamonic

Korpisalo
Forsberg

Pinto needs a contract which would push one of Kastelic of Chartier to be the extra, we probably call up Kleven, so lets say that adds 5 mil, bringing us to around 79 mil, leaving a 3rd line LW spot to fill. if Chychrun is out that opens up another 4.6 to replace him with that RHD, so down to 73.4 in an 87.5 cap world.

So, 7 mil for a RHD, and another 7 left to fill that 3rd line (or 2nd line and push Greig down) LW sport.

He's been good but not great. The losing a step is probably offset by how good a teammate he has been. I.e. maybe he has lost a step but his professionalism and perception of his personality has definitely been boosted.

There has been some league-wide talk making the rounds lately suggesting Chychrun may not be a fit in the Senators room. Two separate sources have suggested his desire to sign in Ottawa long-term may be in question

Not a fit in the room?? Pagnotta isn't the most reliable but that's not at all the vibe I get with Chychrun. Guy hates losing which is exactly what we need.

Our external needs for next year:

DEF top 4 RD defensive/physical
DEF depth 6/7 defensive/physical
FWD top 6 C/LW/RW 200ft
FWD depth 12/13 defensive/physical

Who do we get? What do we give up?

Im hoping for (in the mould of):
Weeger (chycrun or chabot or norris)
Seeler (UFA - $2M)
Teravainen (UFA - $6M)
Clutterbuck (UFA - $2M)

If Chychrun is unwilling to re-sign, ending up with Weegar would be one of the best case scenarios.

It would solve one of the major problems with the backend by adding a RHD. He is cost controlled for many years through a rising cap. Chychrun likely costs 8M-9.5M to extend.

Can't imagine Chychrun is thrilled with how his time in Ottawa has gone thus far.

Has done nothing but lose his entire career. Has a grand total of 9 playoff games in 8 seasons and this team is falling apart.

He's tasked with babysitting Hamonic at even strength and has been on the #2 PP almost the entire year, even with Chabot was out with injury.

Hasn't been a great fit so far and it should surprise no one that he probably won't extend here this summer.

If that is the case we should obviously be trading him at this year's deadline with retention. Need to try to replace as much as we gave up to get him.

This is a human who eats raw liver to get a competitive edge. I could see how he might not jive with being in a room of a losing team who enjoy collecting running shoes and getting yucky with the boys at the Byward market.

I think Coleman is a buyer beware addition, you're paying a major premium for a big outlier of a season. Good player that plays the way we want, but worst possible time to try and trade for him.

I think he has the profile that we're looking for. I don't think this team will be as focused on top end talent rather than hard working players that give their all every night and own a spot on the top 9.

I'd argue that Joseph has been as effective than some of our top 6 players. We need guys who give their all every night and we don't have that.

Whoever ends up getting moved, I suspect the return will be different than what we expect. It'll be depth, salvage, underated or overlooked players. Mid round picks. Assets to add depth to the line up, prospect pool.

Has Greig shown you enough to believe that he will become a Second line Left winger and score 20-30 goals and add 30-40 assists? keeping in mind that 20 goals must be paired with 40 assists and 30 goals can be paired with 30 assists as a player is more a scorer than a set up man.. So 60-70 points.

The Kid is sitting at 4 goals, 10 assists for 14 points in 28 games.. that is ~ 41 point season.. Adding 20 points for increased PP time. And we have a 61 point player...

In todays game, is that okay for a #2 line player? most of Ottawa's top 6 forwards are on their way (less Norris) to 70 point plus seasons. And it's not like Ottawa is tearing the league to shreds, offensively.

if he does not evolve, then saving money could rob you of a key 5-10 points of personal performance, which is 2-3 points in the standings for the team!!!! 95 versus 92 points is in the playoffs or 10th in the conference.

careless contracts, underperforming players, bad trades, bad drafts.. there is a price to pay for that.

Huh?

Every team parties winners or loses... what are you saying

I could see it. He has a pretty strange personality. Dude is seriously red-pilled if you follow him on social media. Like he reposts some pretty stupid right-wing shit.

All true, but that lineup depends on Grieg as a winger on the 2nd line. If it's not Grieg, then just using Tarasenko's salary as budgetary number, it adds around another $5 m to the cap. I can you see why you did move Grieg to wing though. It's like our LD situation in that we have surplus of centers as well.

Plus, we still really only have one true good RD in Zub and are forcing a LD to play the right side like we have done this year with questionable (at best) results.

Just thinking out loud, and who knows? I'm not pretending to be Nostradamus.
