Depends on what kind of identity they want on that 4th line.
For sure. I'd like them to have options so as not to pigeon hole themselves to one identity. Kastelic in the middle is good, but a MacEwan/Kelly wing combo tells you no offence and it's purely a grinder line. Probably a 5-8 minute a night only type 4th line.

how many contract slots do we have left?

i’d like to see one or two guys brought in at league minimum to create competition in the bottom-6 and give the team depth.

Why did we sign MacEwen to a bigger contract than Sundqvist or Boqvist?

What exactly does Dorion think makes a good bottom six?
Dorion learned from his DBC mistake. Called MacEwen, asked him if would be willing to play here, MacEwen answered maybe if we offered a 2 year deal not just 1. Dorion said im all out of the 2 year paper contracts here is 3 years instead.

Right, Smejkal is in there too. I'm nervous on expecting anything from Sokolov, but good mention.

Kelly produced 1 goal last year. I think I speak for everyone when I say he needs to bring more than that, even as a guy in there for his jam. We see more of what we saw last year and I hope he's quickly demoted. Would not be opposed to him needing to play his way back in again.

I still hope a middle 6er is added to push someone down and increase the quality of the bottom that way.

Me too. That contract fits well as a 13th/14th forward. With the term, they may be willing to throw him on waivers when needed too.
Sokolov is not waiver eligible & if they plan on him playing in Belleville he will need to go through waivers & they could lose him. IMO they need two guys for the 3rd line & maybe it's between Joseph, Smejkal, Greig & Sokolov. Joseph has the experience but next to no offence, Greig likely has more offence but less experience & Sokolov has paid his dues in Belleville & the only question now is if he can translate that success to the NHL on a 3rd line? Smejkal is a wildcard, no one knows what to expect from this guy. Pinto is a lock for the 3rd line C spot. Not sure if they stay internal or go to the UFA market or make a trade before the season starts, my guess is that he brings in one more top 9 player they can afford that fits their budget, maybe Laughton LW.

Greig/Smejkal - Pinto - Sokolov/Joseph
K

Not really
Yes really, who is going to fight Reeves, Lucic, Matt Martin, Xhekaj & all the other enforcers in the league. Or do we go back to JM's approach to just ignore it while they eat our lunch. Boyle punching EK in the face they had to dress Carkner to fix that, they had to dress Neil to take care of Tanner Glass who was running wild with no response, remember Gary Roberts? How many examples do we need? Who else is going to fight those guys? Kastelic is still not ready, he almost got killed fighting an experienced fighter last yr, Tkachuk is too valuable to have him fighting & Hamonic isn't tough enough to be a heavyweight enforcer.

Interesting. I'm hoping we see something like the below, but certainly wouldn't be opposed with a 2nd upgrade too, even if it means someone near the bottom like Kelly or Joseph goes out the door.

Giroux - Stutzle - Tkachuk
Kubalik - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Addition
Smejkal - Kastelic - Joseph

Kelly, MacEwan as extras, possibly one put on waivers.

Sokolov possibly to start on the team over Greig because of waiver status and to see if there's anything there with Sok or not. Or just take our chances with Sokolov on waivers if he has a poor camp.

Basically, I don't want to see many spots in that bottom 6 gifted and hope we have a lot of competition in camp, even if it leads to losing a guy on waivers or ditching them via trade. Nobody other than Pinto and Kastelic showed they belong there on a full time basis, even Joseph.

I like the looks of that ... Needs to be a good Addition .. Like Laughton for example; Tatar would be good too

I would like Laughton, but the cost to acquire could be an issue. Tatar feels like a good, cheap short term option that could help get to the playoffs we can potentially even upgrade on him at the deadline if we're in it. Someone like Garland could work there too if they want someone with term.

Just hate the idea of some of these guys being penciled in or being thin when injuries hit.

We seem a little vulnerable there again.. If any of the big guns get hurt... or at this point Pinto as well. Laughton would cost more than most would like I suspect but he'd provide a very nice depth piece.

Yup. Too thin atm and too many guys comfortable that shouldnt be, but at least sounds like it should be addressed, just depends if we like what Dorion does there.

Greig - Pinto - Smejkal - Kastelic - Joseph - Sokolov - MacEwen - Crookshank are 9 options. Need 1 more consistent piece I think.

Maybe 3 or 4 guys in that list that I’m comfortable with.

They just signed MacEwen so I doubt he is waived, maybe Kelly, but my guess continues to be Joseph & his $3 mil to be traded. I agree with SOA that Laughton would be a guy that they could go after given his association with Giroux & DJ, he's a left shot which to me means he would replace Greig most likely & Sokolov being a RW would fill that 3rd line RW spot. Laughton fits into their salary structure at $3 mil & has 3 yrs left on his contract & he's only 29 yrs old. He checks a lot of boxes they like.

I think Ott needs to move both Joseph & Brannstrom to free up the money to trade for Laughton along with that 1st rd pick we just acquired from the DBC trade. The 1st rd pick entices them to do it, Joseph replaces Laughton & maybe they could use Brannstrom as a PMD. We'll see, but they are getting close to filling out their 13 forwards since they already have 8 D & their goalies in place. This trade makes the team bigger & harder to play against, adds a little more offence & Laughton brings some leadership qualities & toughness. I think it's an overpayment but it depends how much they want him, he would improve the team, no question.

To Philly: 2024 Boston conditional 1st rd pick, Joseph LW/RW & Brannstrom LD/RD
To Ott: Scott Laughton LW

Tkachuk $8.2 - Stutzle $8.3 - Giroux $6.5 = $23
Kubalik $2.5 - Norris $8 - Batherson $5 = $15.5
Laughton $3 - Pinto $2.5 - Sokolov $1 = $6.5
Smejkal $.8- Kastelic $.8- MacEwen $.7/Kelly $.7 = $3 + $48 mil

Chabot $8 - Zub $4.6 = $12.6
Sanderson $1 - Chychrun $4.6 = $5.6
Kleven $1- Hamonic $1/JBD $.8 = $2.8 = $21 mil

Korpisalo $4 - Forsberg $3 = $7 + Dead Cap $5 = $12

Forwards $48 + Defence $21 + Goalies & Dead Cap $12 = $81 mil leaves $2 mil for injury callups.

If the Flyers turned down a 1st + 2nd for Laughton they aren’t taking that.

Read somehere by a russian guys. Tarasenko seem to torn with the Sens. Said the Sens look alike the Red Wings in the end of 90 s. He think he s the missing pieces and like the idea to play with Giroux

Who else will give him a chance to play with 2 guys as good as Stutzle and Giroux? Im genuinely curious.

Giroux-Stutzle-Tarasenko
Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Kubalik

That's a hell of a top 9.

There's simply no way you trade for a 3rd line player by giving up a 1st, a slightly overpaid 3rd line player and a cheap young D that's demonstrated the ability to play top 4 minutes for extended stretches of time.

Laughton played 18 minutes a night last year and posted 43 points. You can't win with him playing 18 a night. So when he drops down to a 14 minute a night guy, his points are going to plummet and people will be screaming
