Feels like no team is going through scorched earth rebuilds anymore . Winnipeg and Calgary holding on despite their rosters wanting out. Maybe Florida giving teams hope that they just need to squeeze in and pray. Also economic downturn right now makes lower attendance more drastic .

Also, just thought, let’s say we have to trade Chabot to fit Karlsson, but we don’t have to trade Chabot for Karlsson, the question could become;

What type of return could we get for Thomas Chabot?

His WAR was 3rd in the league last year behind EK and Josi(?) or something (I saw it on Twitter yesterday)

Like could we get Necas and Jarvis from Carolina or something crazy?

Im not advocating for it, but this is a possibility I think.

So Sakic got Colton from TBL for the 2nd round pick he got in the Newhook deal.

So essentially he got a a late 1st and Ross Colton for Alex Newhook. I like Newhook but for a team that needs depth and is hoping to win now, that is great management by Sakic.

Again though, what does Colton want as a contract? I assume Sakic knows, but still, it's up in the air until it's done.

There is zero chance that Carolina would give Necas and Jarvis for Thomas Chabot. That would indeed be crazy.

I would hold onto chabby for another season. Wait to see if Chychrun is asking for a reasonable next contract or not

Problem with Dubois is that he only gives a shit in about 60% of the games it seems. All the tools but not sure he's a guy you can rely on to go hard every night. And at age 25 I'm not sure that will ever change.
He does struggle with being consistent but last year according to winnipeg fans it was more due to playing through injury. Which is what happened in the second half. He was an animal first round when I watched. I think he is getting more consistent, he is the type of player you win with. Id take him on my team in a heartbeat.

Fair enough. It's probably in the same ball park as Newhook though. I think for what they need the player to do on the Avalanche Colton is a better fit than Newhook. I'd bet the salaries will be similar.

So why would Ottawa trade a player that is committed to this organization and actually fits into its age structure... I was disappointed with his play last year but we have seen what he is capable of. Now that he is better insulated I expect him to be much better. I do think a new coaching staff or at the very least defensive coach would really help. With the competition in ice time he will naturally be held more accountable. A new voice could really help him. This team has the high end pieces in place its their depth and goaltending that needs to be addressed. These arent overly hard fixes. Scoring wingers are not hard to acquire and the goalie market is pretty saturated this offseason.

What ballpark is Newhook a well? So many variables right now. These guys need contracts. 3 mil, I assume, which is good for Colton, I would do it.

Avs could definitely regret giving up on Newhook early. Very talented and smart player.

Colton + 1st is a great return if Newhook doesn't turn it around though.

My point is that both are RFAs. And will command roughly the same AAV moving forward (short term anyway). Colorado's window is open and they want to win now. They obviously weren't happy with just futures for Newhook. Managed to replace him and also get 31st overall. To me that was very well played.

I'm just not sure that Newhook would have gotten the offensive role he needs in COL. I think he's a very good young player. Montreal might just be a better fit.

If he becomes a Senator.. who else?
They’ll say that he was a guy they were interested in at the draft. He can put the puck in the net, they like his skills and think he has more there than he’s shown in Detroit. Whatever the reasons, he wasn’t able to become the player they think he can be and they’re excited to get to work with him and give him a new start.

Let’s go!!!!

Colton would have been an awesome pickup. Damn that really sucks. Must be nice to have a guy like Sakic at GM.

Don’t get me started on Capuano… I agree he will be better and there is no need to, it’s a completely hypothetical scenario about asset management and roster construction. And it’s likely a very bad decision and horrid asset management. It’s interesting for me to think of what pieces we could fetch for Chabot.

Like hypothetically Necas and Chatfield. Then use that remaining 4+ mil in cap to sign Hathaway and Accairi. Is that a better team than where we are now?

Even with 4 million retained on EK that’s the cost of reality. But Erik in that 2D jersey, I mean… There going to put that on cereal boxes.

Why does Ottawa always get screwed? Same situation as Dubois and PLD forced his way to LA and the Kings gave up a kings ransom. But Ottawa is going to get nothing for Debrincat? Makes no sense. Dorion is a joke.
Cause attractive teams can afford to overpay, they will replace the assets with UFAs.

Closest DBC comparable you will find.

he had 10M QO as opposed to 9M for cat.

Meier coming off a 40goals 26 assists campaign. for 66pts in 78 games.
Debrincat 27 goals 39 assists for 66 in 82 games but had 40 the year prior.

I'm thinking Ottawa needs to trade DBC before the season starts.
No team that would trade for him is going to remove from their roster closing in on the playoffs. If you're Ottawa, losing a top6F right before playoffs and not getting something back really kills you.
Stop being scared of being on the ledge of the window, it's ok!
