I feel like EK makes little sense for them even just from a cap picture.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree, I’m just saying that given the choice, I’m sure EK would rather go to the Canes because they play a style that complements his game and that they have a much greater chance of winning the cup than us.

Pens should have bought out Granlund, that would have given $4.7 mill of capspace this season. Then it's 3 years of a 1.8 mill caphit, offset by Carter gone. Plus it would have given room to extend Guentzal.

The Canes are arguably the hardest working team in the league, or among them, Pittsburgh... well. EK would likely have a blast playing here. I think he would have a hard time with Brindamour despite likely enjoying more success there.
I don't anyone can deny Karlsson's effort. 2017 was a brilliant display of carrying a team and doing everything.

He himself almost beat us.

Only way Carolina can do Karlsson is by moving multiple contracts including either Burns (who was really good for them..?) and Pesce (who is obviously always great). Would be a super weird deal and I don't see why they would do it given that they have a bunch of dudes who will run their powerplay already.

I disagree with point #1 but yea #2 is obviously true - unless the Pens get EK. Then maybe not.

I honestly don't see how the Canes can make Karlsson work without having massive issues throughout the rest of their roster. They can definitely make it work, it's more of a "why are you doing that?" type of thing.

Their defense right now is:

Slavin-Burns
Orlov-Pesce
Skjei-Chatfield

They can get the money they need by sending out Skjei and Pesce for assets, but why are you doing that? Their defense is already stacked the way it is, why not spend those assets or cap space on a forward or something?

I think the Canes have been rumored to be shopping Pesce for weeks. He doesn't make a ton, but that's definitely a RD and like ~$4 million cap leaving if they end up with EK65.

Still, I don't think it happens, but we'll see.

I'm sorry, I think you're insane if you wouldn't drive a 1st, and a B level prospect for the best Dman in hockey. I'd give them even more.

They can have DOC, Smith, anyone else they want. None of these pieces matter. POJ? Go ahead. Who cares.

Karlsson would give them a dynamic force that they have never had. And a PP of EK and Burns will improve their worse than our PP. I see the logic.

They have sooo many middle #3/#4 guys that are good defensively, that they can trade 2 of them and be set.

More 5v5 points than McDavid this year playing with nobodies.

He's top 3, 5 at worst.

Seems like the Canes are going for broke this season. They better pray the cap rises significantly next year or they're looking at a cap crunch.

Yeah I think they're shopping him out of an asset management thing, where they don't want to hold onto him and lose him for nothing. I get that entirely, the Canes are a really smart regarding asset management of their players. But is it really the best idea to spend that much on your defense?

Assuming Karlsson comes in at $8.5 million (so $3 million retained), they're going to be spending $26.8 million on their top-4 D. That's a ton, especially when Necas, Teravainen and Aho all need extensions next off-season.

Carolina is stacked on defense. EK really isn't needed. Do they really want to completely throw a grenade at their defense?

Pittsburghish
Probably mentioned, but I loved Dubas giving Rossi shit during the presser in terms of cap calculations. That was funny stuff.
Now the hit pieces will start.

“Kyle didn’t even say goodbye to Penguins legend Brian Dumoulin. Sidney Crosby sighed dejectedly and said ‘I guess this is how we do things in Pittsburgh now.’ Evgeni Malkin toyed with the idea of enlisting in the Russian Army over returning to the gulag created by Dubas.”

The Canes go for broke every season, and while they're good, they're coached to be the most boring f***ing team of bigger names in the league. EK65 will have an infinitely better shot at competing for a Cup there, but he'll be like a 60pt blueliner.

Yeah, I think the thing that's gonna keep Carolina from ever really competing for a Cup is their lack of a genuine, premiere, game-breaking forward. I dunno how they get it, but their best guys are good players, but nothing close to what I'd consider game-breakers at forward.

Yea I don't get it from their perspective. With Orlov now their defense is probably already a top 3 group in the league... if they're gonna take a swing get DeBrincat, they need forwards that can finish.

The best way to describe their cap situation: if the Canes bring in Karlsson at $8.6 million, the Canes will have exactly $50 million committed to a group of 5 forwards, 4 defensemen and 2 goalies. Those 5 forward are Svechkinkov, Bunting, Kotkaniemi, Fast and Staal. So basically, it's not a good group.

With the rumored $10 million extension for Aho, that would take them to $27.5 million in cap space (assuming an $87.5 million cap hit) for 2 top line forwards, a 3rd line forward, an entire 4th line, an entire 3rd pair and 3 extras doesn't seem ideal. And then the next off-season, all of Slavin, Orlov and Burns are UFAs, meaning they'll have even more work to do.

Idk, personally I'm just not a fan of spending $60 million on 12 players for a team. They can probably end up making it work, but I feel like trading for Debrincat makes a ton more sense for them than Karlsson.
