As always the best strategy and best moves around deadline and FA are usually the ones you don't do. Tinker a little.

Dubas blew a full load on day 1. Like he was backed up for months.

I would rather have signed neither Poehling or Eller because both are only 4th liners.

Your 4C is Acciari. They needed a 3C and neither Poehling or Eller are that.
Let’s apply the Jarry defense here:

WhO wAS teH BeTrEr opTioN?!?!

See, still a stupid way to defend a bad contract.

FWIW, I hope the people out here portending doom are right and this team spirals to a top-10 or top-5 pick. I just don't think they're that bad yet. They're still in the even worse spot of being aggressively mediocre, and unable/unwilling to accept reality.

Bracing for impact from the dumptruck of reality that is Carter or Granlund are likely to end up as the 3C.

And honestly I wouldn’t have an issue with that, at least relative to the alternative of Granlund as the RW.

I just want them to add a physical presence on that LW. I wanted Kostin so much because he is pretty much a perfect fit for a defensive line. But this bottom-6 is still butter soft.

I don’t think something like Kostin-Eller-Granlund would be a good 3rd line, but it at least fits what Sullivan wants out of the 3rd line. I really like O’Connor-Acciari-Nieto for the 4th line, but you need someone with some grit on the 3rd line.

All I want out of the bottom-6 is to not hemorrhage chances/goals against. I don't think they can assemble a possession/cycling line, I don't think they can assemble a 3rd line that's an added layer of offense, I don't think they can assemble a shutdown 3rd line.

As long as Carter and Granlund are in the lineup, they'll have one or both bottom-6 lines with a terrible player on them. /shrug

Imagine a team using cap space to get decent players for free off of cap strapped teams.

Where have I heard that idea before? Oh, from the guy who just blew his cap space on Jarry and mediocrity.
Pens can’t really afford another 4+ mill winger, but in theory it would have been nice.

To be fair, that's what they did with Reilly Smith. Vegas dumped him so they could give Barbashev his 5x5 deal.

If the Penguins could just get out of Carter's deal and use the extra money to bring in a physical LWer for that 3rd line, I'm at least satisfied with the bottom-6 going into next year. It's certainly not great and no one would argue it is, but it's at least a coherent vision that fits how Sullivan wants to use it.

Just have to wait and see what happens with this Karlsson talk for now, though. My thoughts on the 3rd line would likely change if Granlund and Petry go out for Karlsson, to the point where I'm actually not sure what I'd do with the 3rd line if they pulled off a trade like that.

Is Smith at 5 mill really that big of a steal for a 3rd from what we’ve seen today?

I’m not crapping on Smith or the deal in itself. It gave me hope that Dubas was smart, but he blew it.
A 3rd rounder is basically worthless, imo. They saved half a million for a player as good or marginally better than Zucker was last season, which was his best with the team.

I mean, it ain't much, and we agree that today was boring and underwhelming, but I didn't expect anything different from an organization that's been scared shitless to commit one way or another for years, and has been entirely content to lazily ride this thing out until Sid retires.

Fingers crossed Geno changes his number to 11 in camp. :)

Help make the decision for this weak ass organization, Geno. One more heroic act.
