After one day, I am somewhat optimistic. I am not a fan of Kyle Dubas, but he did well overall today. He has one main weakness: he overpays for players. I am hopeful that whenever he hires Pridham or someone else, that person will do better in this area.
That said, he added players we desperately needed for quite some time. Graves, while overpaid, is one of those players. Acciari is a terrific addition. Eller is better than many other options that were plausible. He is better than Blueger and Bonino, that much is for certain. He is getting up there, but not crazy old. Nieto is very meh, but he does play Sullivan's style. And at least we went with someone new instead of rehashing the same Sullivan favorites. Over and over. I also like Koppanen. There is some upside there. He adds good depth imo.
I wanted a guy like Nedeljkovic. I think he could become a steal if he can find his game. As for Jarry, my least favorite move but he does have more upside than most of the goaltenders out there. This contract will probably start to smell badly once Nedeljkovic wins the job a la Stuart Skinner, but virtually all NHL GMs are at a loss when it comes to goaltending. It is a pure crapshoot. Would I have done the Jarry contract? Nope. But there is no goaltender move that can ease and appease. It is the nature of the position.
I listened to his presser. It sounds like more younger players will be brought in. I also think there is one big trade coming. Is it Karlsson? Maybe. I personally want Lafreniere. Offer sheet or some other fashion.
For the first day, not bad at all. We are a much better team today than yesterday. We still need more work, but this is a very tough task to bring this thing back to contention while making the future less doomy and gloomy than it was. More work is needed there, for sure. But for a guy I do not like, he is impressing me.
