They kept an aging core in tact that has already been failing and I'm not sold on Rutta outside of Tampa.

If they do in fact end up with Johan Larsson (was reported by EF on Wednesday but nothing has been signed yet, they may be trying to clear money first) then yeah, thats a pretty big pick up for them. I get how hard it is to walk away from franchise cornerstones, but theirs aren't getting any better. I'd expect further steps backwards from both Malkin and Letang in the coming season and lets be real, father time is going to come for Crosby at some point too.

Jarry also still sucks. Not seeing it with the Pens. They're an old group that is going to be really easy to push around.

Carolina OTOH is really interesting. I don't know so much that they got better than they got different but that may be exactly what they need to get over the edge. Clear that they felt goal scoring (especially on the PP) was an issue and they've added 2 really good shooters.

Pittsburgh doesn't have to be great, they just have to be acceptable in the regular season. If they're healthy come April, they will be a royal pain to play against.

I'm not in love with Carolina's D. Outside of Slavin and Pesce their D is trash. I know Burns is a weapon but he's more like a hybrid/roamer. Skjei is a low IQ player. DeAngelo/Smith/Cole leaving will hurt their depth. Unless Heimosalmi or Seeley can pull a Moritz Seider, they're in big trouble. They could always sign washed up guys like Subban or try and revive Stralman's career, but it's not looking too good.

re: Kakko. Pardon my ignorance on the RFA contracts. Does he HAVE to sign a two year bridge deal? Maybe they are trying to convince him to sign a one year contract with less money and then sign him to the bridge next year? 1yr/1.5 million which allows them to sign Motte? I never understood why he HAD to sign a 2 year bridge at 2.5 per. He hasnt played enough to justify that.

I was playing around with some numbers regarding the 2023-24 cap.

A Barclay Goodrow buyout gives the Rangers a $200,000 cap credit for 23-24 and 100,000 credit for 24-25.

The 4th season of the buyout could hurt the Rangers but they will benefit by removing the entire cap plus $200,000 for 23-24 and $100,000 for 24-25. 26-27. The cap will $90M-$100M by 26-27. It gives them a better opportunity to keep their team together next summer.

The $3,427,778 buyout money is off the books after this season. Buyout Goodrow. Free up $3,841,667.

Drury and Ryan Martin have to seriously consider a Goodrow buyout next June. Goodrow is a good player but the Rangers need the money for better players.

He doesn't have to. I would think the Rangers would prefer him to, because if he goes off next year, it would be really tough to sign him next summer, with Laf and K'Andre up for new contracts too.

Disgusting but true. Maybe he would accept a trade with some retention on our part as an alternative.

Goodrow seems a likely playoff LTIR candidate for us, rather than going straight to a buyout.

Hey glad to see other people are on board the Goodrow buyout train. Been harping on it for a while. Unless they can find a taker for him next offseason a buyout is going to be the simplest avenue to be able to keep more important assets. There's really no way around it.

Goodrow's contract is structured weird. Makes me wonder if a buy-out after year 2 was on their minds when they drew it up.

That would not be suprising. If so, great job of thinking outside the box by Drury. It essentially turns an 8 year buyout into 6 years because of the 2 year cap credit and it occurs when the cap is hopefully flat for the last time.

Something feels up doesn’t it? Kakko shouldn’t really be a difficult deal at this point and motte is the type of guy that coming off that playoff should be snatched up quickly. Going past today unsigned? Seems odd.

I don’t know you still have Kravtsov too who we don’t know if he really wants to be here. Hunt is hunt more than expendable. They may be trying something still to make things work.

Flat hard cap with guaranteed contracts is maybe the dumbest thing in any sports league ever

Not sure, we are probably low balling him.

Ty Smith has stunk, still young, but seems like a good trade for the Devils if they think there is no improvement coming.

Because of John Marino? Lol cmon.

I dont understand that trade for NJ. Why are you dealing Ty Smith already? Has he taken a step back?
he took a big step back this past year and i guess they didnt think he was gonna be that great top pair puck mover.

Smith had a rough sophomore year, but there’s talent there.

This is a good deal for Pitt. They rid themselves of Marinos 4.4 for the next FIVE seasons

Pittsburgh just opened that space up. Hold on to Kapanen for the 2nd buyout window. Buyout Zucker. Saves them 3.5M this year. There is the money for Kadri.

Not sure why the Devils or Pens do this

Devils already have Hamilton, Severson, and Nemec at RHD

Pens are selling low on Marino

Both Marino and Smith suck so I’m fine with it but I thought the Pens would use Marino to get a forward. Not sure where Marino slots in on the Devils considering their top 4 RHD are locked up with Hamilton+Nemec for the next 5 years at least

But why would the Pens go after Kadri? They just re-signed Geno. Unless they plan on shifting him to wing, but still weird fit
