He's RFA.
Hmmmm
I wonder who was the last RFA RD picked in the top 10 that was traded ?
Never ?
Certainly rare, but then again Trouba whole situation is uncommon. Trouba actions has spoken very clearly, he wants out. What’s less clear is why or where to......rumoured to want to be closer to his family (Michigan) or GF (she lives in Florida).....if true that covers the why and to a degree narrows the where somewhat. Chevys options are, assuming Trouba refuses to sign long term:
- Go arbitration for one more discounted year and use him as the Jets own rental for one more max level playoff push. Let him walk at year end for free or trade him at the TDL if the season goes poorly.
- Trade him this summer. If traded without any new contract extension or an agreement before to sign (trade/sign)......fair to assume a top pairing 25 yr old RHD would get at the TDL (20 games or so) roughly a late 1st, 2nd and C level prospect......so if traded now he would likely get a bit more for the entire year. If Trouba was traded with a new contract or a trade/sign agreement his return would be higher. Finding a trade/sign deal might be negatively impacted by Trouba limited number of teams he willing to sign with.
We should know in less then 4 weeks though, by the end of the draft I fully expect Trouba to be gone.
I doubt a 1 for 1 trade happens. I’m expecting a complete futures return or a bridge solution RHD & futures as a return.
Only reason the Jets would have interest in that trade is if the scouts were 100% Nylander could be a successful two way 2C at the NHL.
If Trouba is going to come to Toronto it will be in a deal that doesn't include anyone from our core. Understand that Winnipeg is in a cap mess as well. If they can save some $$$ in a transaction with the Leafs this is the only way he is coming. This would eliminate a player like Nylander going the other way, or Marner, or even Kadri. The deal would have to be for lower costing players (Brown, Kappy, Johnsson, Llijegren, Bracco and picks). By Winnipeg trading Trouba, they also have Myers as an UFA. You would have to assume any deal with them needs to have a cheap defensive piece included in the deal.

3rd Round Pick

Trouba
Something like this would be the deal.
Many people don’t understand the cap situation in Winnipeg......not as bad as you think. Taking a contract back isn’t the problem as long as it fills one of two needs.....long term 2C or top 4 RHD.....cap spending is all about priorities.....those are the two biggest needs by far. Certainly they can’t take any dump contracts or unimportant contracts. There are non cap teams, cap teams......and then there is cap hell teams. Jets are a cap team (not totally in-similar to the Leafs), with loads of options to create cap space b/c many big ticket players have no trade restrictions and can easily be traded to use cap else where. Cap hell teams don’t have this flexibility, they are restricted from trading players bc of trade restrictions on their contracts resulting is forced trades of good players just to keep bad players......see the Oilers as an example.
FYI Myers is being booted out the door, Jets have had zero chats with him or his agent about any extension confirmed by Myers himself. Buyer beware on Myers.
I like KK but Jets have zero need for more wingers, they have too many now. Only way KK would be part of the deal is if another trade was done after to flip KK or one of the current higher paid wingers to another team to fill needs else where on the team and/or create cap space.
Both the GM & Owner promised there would be significant changes to the Jets this summer partly due to the disappointing year & due to cap realities & misc reasons (Trouba highly likely). Expecting at a min to be gone most if not all via trade or buy out or pushed out the door: Kulikov, MP, Myers and Trouba. More players? Maybe a Connor or Ehlers to fill top 4 RHD void left by Trouba (depends on the Trouba return)? Myers played 3rd pairing so filling his spot is easy from within cheaply. Going to be a fun summer to see all the moves by the Jets and other teams.
