Seems very unlikely.
Not sure why people discuss unlikely things.

Attitude seems to be whatever helps us make a better team versus trying to understand the potential trading partner's motivation, needs and the alternatives that the other team has.

That's basically what this whole forum is... discussing unlikely things. You are in a free agent and trade thread. Outside of of some RFA's being resigned, there isn't much "likely" in signing UFA's, or discussing trades.

Or the leafs could trade marleau for spooner in Vancouver for buyouts. Then marleau goes back home for minimum.

Marleau would be 3.8 million in cash and a 6.25 hit.

Spooner would be I think 2.6 million in cash and 1.3 million hit for 2 years.

We would have to give them something for the extra 1.2 million for sure but who knows.

Ya, we'd need to add for sure thought for them to eat that cap hit

But question is how much. It’s not the capnhit for Vancouver. They would be adding 3 million to cap when they have miles available. They won’t care about cap hit.

It’s the extra 1.2 million they would have to eat. I don’t know how much that is worth?

Not that much. We could probably make it a decent prospect and that's it.

He's RFA.

Hmmmm

I wonder who was the last RFA RD picked in the top 10 that was traded ?

Never ?

Certainly rare, but then again Trouba whole situation is uncommon. Trouba actions has spoken very clearly, he wants out. What’s less clear is why or where to......rumoured to want to be closer to his family (Michigan) or GF (she lives in Florida).....if true that covers the why and to a degree narrows the where somewhat. Chevys options are, assuming Trouba refuses to sign long term:

- Go arbitration for one more discounted year and use him as the Jets own rental for one more max level playoff push. Let him walk at year end for free or trade him at the TDL if the season goes poorly.

- Trade him this summer. If traded without any new contract extension or an agreement before to sign (trade/sign)......fair to assume a top pairing 25 yr old RHD would get at the TDL (20 games or so) roughly a late 1st, 2nd and C level prospect......so if traded now he would likely get a bit more for the entire year. If Trouba was traded with a new contract or a trade/sign agreement his return would be higher. Finding a trade/sign deal might be negatively impacted by Trouba limited number of teams he willing to sign with.

We should know in less then 4 weeks though, by the end of the draft I fully expect Trouba to be gone.

I doubt a 1 for 1 trade happens. I’m expecting a complete futures return or a bridge solution RHD & futures as a return.

Nylander for Trouba ?

Only reason the Jets would have interest in that trade is if the scouts were 100% Nylander could be a successful two way 2C at the NHL.

If Trouba is going to come to Toronto it will be in a deal that doesn't include anyone from our core. Understand that Winnipeg is in a cap mess as well. If they can save some $$$ in a transaction with the Leafs this is the only way he is coming. This would eliminate a player like Nylander going the other way, or Marner, or even Kadri. The deal would have to be for lower costing players (Brown, Kappy, Johnsson, Llijegren, Bracco and picks). By Winnipeg trading Trouba, they also have Myers as an UFA. You would have to assume any deal with them needs to have a cheap defensive piece included in the deal.

Llijegren
Kapanen
3rd Round Pick

for

Trouba

Something like this would be the deal.

Many people don’t understand the cap situation in Winnipeg......not as bad as you think. Taking a contract back isn’t the problem as long as it fills one of two needs.....long term 2C or top 4 RHD.....cap spending is all about priorities.....those are the two biggest needs by far. Certainly they can’t take any dump contracts or unimportant contracts. There are non cap teams, cap teams......and then there is cap hell teams. Jets are a cap team (not totally in-similar to the Leafs), with loads of options to create cap space b/c many big ticket players have no trade restrictions and can easily be traded to use cap else where. Cap hell teams don’t have this flexibility, they are restricted from trading players bc of trade restrictions on their contracts resulting is forced trades of good players just to keep bad players......see the Oilers as an example.

FYI Myers is being booted out the door, Jets have had zero chats with him or his agent about any extension confirmed by Myers himself. Buyer beware on Myers.

I like KK but Jets have zero need for more wingers, they have too many now. Only way KK would be part of the deal is if another trade was done after to flip KK or one of the current higher paid wingers to another team to fill needs else where on the team and/or create cap space.

Both the GM & Owner promised there would be significant changes to the Jets this summer partly due to the disappointing year & due to cap realities & misc reasons (Trouba highly likely). Expecting at a min to be gone most if not all via trade or buy out or pushed out the door: Kulikov, MP, Myers and Trouba. More players? Maybe a Connor or Ehlers to fill top 4 RHD void left by Trouba (depends on the Trouba return)? Myers played 3rd pairing so filling his spot is easy from within cheaply. Going to be a fun summer to see all the moves by the Jets and other teams.

Two 4th line guys who can PK and we can for sure get on the cheap are Carpenter, and Rieder. Carpenter can also play center and is right handed (plays with a bit of grit too). Rieder is fast and will be looking for a bounce back season, hes very trusted on the PK.

With Dermott's injury, I'd be interested in say Coburn as a veteran presence and he's 34, so you don't have to worry about a 35+ contract

Maybe a guy like Brown+spare 4th rounder?
Brown is a guy who can be a 3w on that team.

Leafs move Marleau, Brown and the spare 4th, Vancouver moves Spooner

Marleau signs for Brown money, 2.1m x 1 year (whatever it is, this is just for simplicity)
Leafs save Marleaus current $6.25m - $1.33m Spooner buyout for 2 years.

So Leafs save $4.92m in 2019-2020 and add $1.33m in 2020-2021

This is the only potential trade i could see us moving Marleau and its a long shot.

After July 1st so that the leafs pay the brunt of the actual dollars on Marleau's contract...

To Ottawa:
Marleau
Brown
2nd/3rd round pick

To Toronto:
Whatever

Then....

To Ottawa:
Malker Karlsson (2 Million cap hit)

To San Jose

Marleau @ 50% retention (3.125 Million cap hit)

In summary:

Ottawa gets:
M. Karlsson, Connor Brown, 2nd/3rd round pick for free and reach cap floor quite easily

San Jose Gets
Marleau while only adding 1.125 to their cap (Marleau is better than Melker karlsson)

Toronto Gets:
Cap relief

Why does San Jose want Marleau
They didn’t want him 2 years ago

I can guarantee you San Jose will not trade for Marleau.they stripped him of the captain of the team. Same management there

The Leafs would not pay Brown and a 4th and still take on Spooner. Dumping Marleau is not going to cost that much. It may not even cost anything at all, and with his NMC, he probably stays... which is fine since we'd need to replace him anyways.

Fan service. Another season without a cup, they'll be looking to distract from fan scrutiny

Sounds like a man looking to get out of town :)

Sounds like a guy who is willing to tell it how it is.

It is 100% true. Our system is the largest issue, followed by inconsistent efforts by our forwards in our own end. But of course it'll be goal tending or a defenseman who have to take the majority of the criticism for defensive woes.

Maybe that is the problem? I'd have a problem if these guys were malicious, or decided to go to the media before talking it over with their team. Neither Zaitsev nor Sparks said anything malicious or even untrue. It is something that Babcock or one of our leaders should be drilling into our team, but based on their performances, does not seem to stick all that well.

Even worse than that, if there is a culture in the locker room, or the organization as a whole, where guys are not allowed or do not feel comfortable in raising even the most legitimate concerns (at least in Sparks' case, Zaitsev is kind of just a comment about toxic Toronto media and fans which is also completely warranted) to their teammates, coaches or management, then we have problems that require a lot more widespread changes than those being talked about right now.
