Not sure how I feel about trading Hyman. He is probably valued around the league much more than what he's worth, given how relied upon he's been so far. And while I really like Hyman, I'm not sure it's entirely deserved. So this could be an opportunity to sell really high on a player who is not a core piece on this team.

On the other hand I value diversity in a team, and Hyman has qualities that I want to keep around. Like @JustAShadow said above, he's not the kind of piece you should move for cap reasons. If we dangled him and could catch a nice fish that could actually be more valuable for us, that's another thing entirely.

Agreed. Why move him? Brown is less effective - move him instead.

My final offer for Nylander was 3 x 5 AAV.

Better than 5 x 11.6

its about managing your windows of opportunity

They are at the end of the brief one with top guys on ELC
the next should have been 2 or 3 years on bridge deals
the one after that a couple years after bridge where they rebuild depth from within

the Marleau contract was still okay if you bridged those guys but now its not with what Dubas is signing guys for. Also now looks like trying to fix the D internally where guys like Lil would have been relied on at the end of that middle window but instead Leafs need (mins, role, etc) them now.

Just have to trust dubas knows what he's doing and is able to do things we aren't seeing yet.

But everyone knew the D was an issue (specifically RHD) going in to last off season

TB isn't going to be worse next year

leafs were also a top 10 team last year and lost to the team that probably is going to win the cup. we probably just have to much time to analyze this stuff :). If they beat the Bruins all these conversations would be different and they would have actualized that first window i was talking about.... and damn how amazing would it have been to have Leafs and Raps in respective finals at same time

Use common sense

Trouba is going to want 6-7 million a year

Which one of Tavares Matthews marner or nylander are you getting rid of

If not them then brown kadri kappy and johnsson have to go and then we deplete our depth.

We have enough space to sign marner

If we sign Trouba to 6 million that means we have to get that salary from somewhere

Take your pick one of the top 4 forwards or our depth
If Zaitsev, Brown, Kap, AJ are gone we could afford Trouba at 7 million. We would not have to move Kadri as well...I think our depth would still be ok if Moore and Bracco could step into roles and other Marlies could fill bottom 6 positions.

This is the only potential trade i could see us moving Marleau and its a long shot.

After July 1st so that the leafs pay the brunt of the actual dollars on Marleau's contract...

To Ottawa:
Marleau
Brown
2nd/3rd round pick

To Toronto:
Whatever

Then....

To Ottawa:
Malker Karlsson (2 Million cap hit)

To San Jose

Marleau @ 50% retention (3.125 Million cap hit)

In summary:

Ottawa gets:
M. Karlsson, Connor Brown, 2nd/3rd round pick for free and reach cap floor quite easily

San Jose Gets
Marleau while only adding 1.125 to their cap (Marleau is better than Melker karlsson)

Toronto Gets:
Cap relief

I dont know about all this also because muzzin and dermott will need new deals after next year, rielly and anderson will be coming up soon to so hopefully cap goes up abit but raised a good question in my head...

If you can get a panarin for 9ish or at least allot less then marner specially if 16 actually wants Matthew's money do you do it and trade marner for elite defender on a good deal?
Say a parayko or something...is that even a consideration

The obvious trade that stands out as unfair is the Brown for B. Ritchie swap. Ritchie doesn't have that value.

someone on the fan asked would you trade marner for kap, johnson, gardiner and 4 x 1st

marner is my favourite player, love watching him but putting it in context like that helps imo

I would trade him for Panarin, Johnsson (we can probably sign one of Johnsson/Kap as is), and 4 1sts. I love Kappy and Gards, but use that money on a legit Marner replacement

The challenge on this theory, is that "if" Marner goes by the offer sheet route, it will be too late to sign a guy like Panarin, who likely gets signed on July 1st.

Trouba changes our team so much it is crazy.

RHD we need.

Teams don't trade RHD.

doubt that changes

Or the leafs could trade marleau for spooner in Vancouver for buyouts. Then marleau goes back home for minimum.

Marleau would be 3.8 million in cash and a 6.25 hit.

Spooner would be I think 2.6 million in cash and 1.3 million hit for 2 years.

We would have to give them something for the extra 1.2 million for sure but who knows.

Marner is going nowhere he will re-sign cheaper then what people are speculating. Not Marner's camp or the Leafs organization has said a word about what Marner is expecting. Its pure speculation on the media side. All that we have heard from the people actually involved in the negotiations are that they want to get it completed by July 1st and conversations have been positive and fluent.

Speculating otherwise and all of us forcing Marner out of town is so premature. Until I hear someone from the Leafs organization state that Marners camp is being unrealistic or Marner's camp actually putting out there a comparison to what they think Marner is worth. Im not sweating it and no one else should either its a waste of time.

At least in the Nylander negotiations things were leaked by the actual parties involved (Nylander agent, Shanny, Dubas, Nylander dad). In Marner's case the only thing I heard so far is what I already said.

Nylander for Trouba ?

If Trouba is going to come to Toronto it will be in a deal that doesn't include anyone from our core. Understand that Winnipeg is in a cap mess as well. If they can save some $$$ in a transaction with the Leafs this is the only way he is coming. This would eliminate a player like Nylander going the other way, or Marner, or even Kadri. The deal would have to be for lower costing players (Brown, Kappy, Johnsson, Llijegren, Bracco and picks). By Winnipeg trading Trouba, they also have Myers as an UFA. You would have to assume any deal with them needs to have a cheap defensive piece included in the deal.

Llijegren
Kapanen
3rd Round Pick

Trouba

The way I see it, this gives the leafs the opportunity to go all in next season, and also gives Bracco, Liljigren, Sandin, Engvall and Marchement an extra year to develop.

I would trade Roslovic's RFA rights, Kapanen/Johnsson for Picks and Prospects, and let Gudas Walk. The following season have:

Panarin - Matthews - Anderson
AJ/KK - Tavares - Nylander
Hyman - - Lowry - - Bracco
Moore - Engvall - Ritchie/Korshkov/Marchement

Rielly - Werenski
Muzzin - Liljigren
Sandin - Dermott

Doubt if Ottawa would be incentivized by that meager return and very skeptical that Columbus would move Werenski even for Marner. CBJ can add forwards via other methods e.g., free agency Didn't pay much attention to the rest of the trades.
