Why would Florida make that trade when they're reportedly the front runner for some of the hot ticket ufas?

Why would any team trade any player? If they believe that Nylander will pan out, and like Johnsson as a depth piece, want to build their offence, the pick was good enough, and don't 100% trust Ekblad... then why not?

Obviously, like any trade proposal its just based on speculation. Nothing more. I'm not predicting it will happen or anything like that.

JvR - 27 goals and 21 assists in 66 games played.
Pacioretty - 22 goals and 18 assists in 66 games played.
Nylander - 7 goals and 20 assists in 54 games played.

So, yeah, not elite money, I guess, however, 2 of the 3 scrubs produced more for the scrub money they got payed! ;)
Given the choice between the 3, I certainly know who I'm taking.

(Hint: It's the 23-year-old)

The point in was getting at is teams generally dont have any interest in trading their core young guys, even for a "fair" offer - hence why it rarely happens it today's NHL.

Your package was decent but it doesnt fit what Florida's likely offseason plan. They can sign Panarin and keep Ekblad.

Well no shit.... Again, its a trade PROPOSAL. Nothing more.

Florida could sign Panarin, Trade for Nylander AND sign another quality defensman (Myers, Gardiner, etc). Again, this isn't a prediction....

7 NHL teams that could threaten to offer-sheet a superstar - Sportsnet.ca
Offer sheet compensation for 2019 off-season
(based on AAV of sheet signed)

$0 to $1,395,053: None

$1,395,054 to $2,113,716: One third-round pick

$2,113,717 to $4,227,437: One second-round pick

$4,227,438 to $6,341,152: One first-round pick, one third-round pick

$6,341,153 to $8,454,871: One first-round pick, one second-round pick, one third-round pick

$8,454,872-$10,568,589: Two first-round picks, one second-round pick, one third-round pick

$10,568,590 and up: Four first-round picks
Although the safe bet remains no one floats an offer sheet, here are seven candidates who meet the requirements and desire to at least consider one:

New York Islanders

Detroit Red Wings

Montreal Canadiens

New Jersey Devils

Carolina Hurricanes

Arizona Coyotes

Buffalo Sabres

Arizona and Carolina cant afford too (re: front loading/signing bonuses)

Buffalo will open the doors for us to poach Dahlin if they try

I dont see how Detroit could? Theyll have 10 mill in space to sign 5 players...

Montreal has Domi and Mete coming up the season after next, they need to make sure there is still money left

NYI have Nelson, Lee and Eberle as FA, theyll only have space if they dont re-sign them

Offer sheets I think are much more viable for guys like Johnsson and Kapanen because of the compensation, not so much Marner. (one of Johnsson/Kapanen for 4.2m is only a 2nd)

Do signing bonuses count against retention in terms of actual money paid?

For example. If a player has a 10 million cap hit with 8 million a year in bonuses. If there is 20 percent retention. Then obviously the retaining team has a 2 million hit.

But in real money. Do they actually pay 20 percent of the full 10 million Or just the base salary?

In this example if it’s the full hit they pay 2 million a year in real money if it’s the full
Boat. If it’s just base salary that’s only 400k

That depends.

For example, Nylander has an $8.3 million signing bonus on July 1st next year, and a $700k salary.

If he's traded on June 30th, with 20% retention, old team is on the hook for $1.8 million, the balance to the new team, of combined bonus and salary.

If he's traded on July 2nd, the bonus will have been paid, and the 20% retention would be only on the $700k in real money dollar terms. The old team would pay $140k salary, with the new team the rest.

I guess my question is. Signing bonuses are treated differently... they count in buyouts..... do they count in retention? Or are they separate?

And they would have to be able to provide lockout protection.

The leafs can give a huge signing bonus on July 1 of the lockout year. So if there is a stoppage. Even if unlikely they could get paid.

Could Arizona pay Marner 10 million to sit at home?

With Makar in COL now, I wonder if Tyson Barrie could be available for a forward. COL needs some secondary scoring.

Do the Leafs want/need a right handed version of Gardiner?

Wouldn't the Leafs want someone more two way on the right side?

A Muzzin-Barrie or Dermott-Barrie pairing could be quite good.

Rielly-Muzzin/Dermott
Muzzin/Dermott-Barrie
Sandin/Rosen-Liljegren

Not sure what Colorado would want.. Maybe a Kadri-Barrie swap .. Problem is Barrie is a pending UFA, so you're giving up a cost-effective Kadri for a rental.

On top of that the Leafs likely don't have the cap space to re-sign Barrie too so I'm struggling to see a deal make sense.

Agree Barrie contract status makes it hard to trade for him without a contract agreed to beforehand. Barrie going to be starting his last year next season, then gets a bit of a raise. Personally I would prefer a RHD that's a bit more defensively aware/balanced (two way guy) and ideally more phyiscal then Barrie.

Yep if I’m looking at a small RHD with 1 year at about 5.5 I’m looking at spurgeon.

Minnesota is more likely in my mind to make moves as they missed the playoffs. He is much better defensively

Theres gotta be a good trade coming up....we have too many bodies and more coming from the Marlies. Guys fighting for higher spots in lineup and may be wasted on the 4th.
Here's how I see us shaping up with current positions and guys that should be up IMO.

Centre - Tavares, Matthews, Kadri, Gauthier, Brooks?
LW - Hyman, Marleau, Petan, Johnsson, Michaylev, Marchment, Engvall
RW - Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, Moore, Bracco, Korshkov, Brown

Centre looks a little thin. Gotta keep Kadri or at least get a serviceable 3rd line guy back in any trade. Time to move on from Gauthier as he doesn't add anything.....Is Brooks able to work there?

LW looks pretty bad at first glance. Assuming Hyman is locked on top line and Marleau cant be moved that leaves 2 spots. Michaylev and AJ I guess.......with Marchment or Engvall as pressbox material or available to trade?

RW is a surpluss. Marner and Nylander are top 2. Bracco cant be put lower than 3rd line with what he brings which leaves Moore on the fourth....which I hate. he should be higher. What about Kap/Korsh/Brown?

Too many bodies....not a bad thing....but lots of trade options to get us that RHD. Kap/AJ/Brown/Prospect/pick....has gotta return something good no?

IMO, Franson gets a little overrated by certain stats, but he also is undeniably a better player than some currently on NHL rosters. If he would sign dirt cheap I would take him over Justin Holl.
Not sure what he would cost but if he wants to get back into the NHL a low priced 1 year deal may be a good option for us?
