You could but with Savard and Jones as top 4RD it probably won't matter that much

I'm sure there desperate to get Wennberg off the roster but I'm not sure how much money they would eat to make it happen

I wonder if they would retain enough to get him down to 3.5M then move him to us for bugger all?, that would be 5.4M over the life of his contract

Their fans seemed interested in the Marleau+ 2 picks for Wennberg scenario

Travis Hamonic is on the TSN trade bait, he would be a good partner for Rielly.

He would be depending on the cost, don't think he goes though, believe it will be Brodie.

One Flames fan offered up Hamonic, Bennett and their 1st for Nylander.

That is tough.

Naw the flames offer is weak.

Hamonic is a UFA in a year he doesnt have any where near as much value as he did when he got a 1st and 2 2nds. Bennett is a disapointment who cant crack 30 points. The flames 1st is in the 20s. I'd deal nylander if the right deal came but not for that sort of package.

2019 4th (ours I guess?) and a 2020 3rd + Marleau for Wennberg.

I like Wennberg so I'd be tempted to do that, move Zaitsev and Brown with a surplus of forwards you could trade for defensive help isn't a bad position to be in

Didn't notice the Hamonic deal was nearly up, I would need to see if an extension could be worked out first.

I was thinking something around Z and Pysyk, apparently FLA/VAN were into Zaitsev a bit.

I usually do Brown+Sparks for Edmonton's 2nd, they might want to send Kassian or Benning our way in that deal though. I don't mind Benning, he plays a simple physical game.

Getting some bottom pair RD insurance wouldn't be a bad idea if you want to slow roll Liljegren in the AHL, so if you could do a Zaitsev for Pysyk or could afford to take Benning back it's not a bad idea

That is a solid start for our defense, depending on how the rest of the cap etc went. I wouldn't be mad at a Stralman return on a 2 year deal.

It looks like wennbergs buyout would be like 400-800k a year.

Not plan A. But a last resort to get rid of marleau contract it might work.

If they buy out Wennberg it costs them $7.1M and the buy out is on the books for quite some time.

Marleau is owed 3M signing bonuses July 1st and then 416k a year but only $6.25M on their cap this year, kind of less annoying for them.

If Wennberg still sucks for us after this season, we could buy him out for 1/3 still.

Ya I don’t know if I would do it myself. But it’s interesting as an idea.

Stralman on a 2 year would be good. Other teams will be able to give him way more money than us though. We could probably offer him 3m x 2 years, if we are able to clear enough space. I doubt that gets it done. I honestly could see them bringing back Hainsey for less and letting Dermott Grow into Rielly's partner

Yeah, it is conceptual just was trying to find something that made it appealing for both teams.

I could see us doing 2 years at 4M per if those other deals came to fruition.

I ran it through cap friendly with trade marleau followed by wennberg buyout.

Then got rid of brown and signed Marner for 10 and mango and kappy for 2.5 each.

That left a full lineup with 3.5 million to spare.

It might be worth it. The first 4 years would only be 400 k on the cap. By the time it gets to 800k. Kessel would be off And the cap would be like 90 million easy

It's a good start, trying to get somebody like Miller on the Right could help as well if were running a fast moving advance the puck type style

Having an excess of forwards as trade chips wouldn't hurt with that

Is that us buying out Wennberg? Because if we get him I'd rather give rehabbing his value a shot instead

I think he'd fit our play style and system watching his play at the worlds and it opens up a Kadri, Johnnson or Kapanen trade for defensive help

I haven't gone through the cap ramifications though

Try doing Z for Pysyk, opens up a bit more.

I usually do Marner 8 years at 9.5M but I guess a 500k buffer isn't the worst.

Id try to hide Miller more then running him 1st pair.

You could if you run Rielly and Muzzin as the top pair then Dermott and Miller or Dermott and Pysyk as the 2nd pair

I just had a look on cap friendly and I could make things work with a

Marleau + picks for Wennberg trade
Brown for Benning + something small
Kadri for a 4M type mid pair RD (I used Miller + pick)
Zaitsev + pick for Pysyk

I would say I was using Wennberg as our 3C and I resigned Johnsson and Kapanen at 2.85M×2 then Marner at 9.85×7

Once I LTIR Horton it fit, the defense wasn't horrendous and I didn't need to IR Dermott or Hyman

This is my ideal offseason that I've put together. Lots of moving pieces but a very complete team IMO.

Signings:
- Marner (RFA): 6x9.5
- Johnsson (RFA): 2.7x3
- Kruger (UFA): 1.1x1
- Acciari (UFA) 1x1

Trades:
- Kapanen + conditional 1st (on Spurgeon re-signing) to MIN for Spurgeon
- Brown to EDM for 3rd + 4th
- Zaitsev + 3rd to anyone for conditional 7th (on Zaitsev playing 83 games)

Team:
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Moore-Kadri-Bracco
Marleau-Kruger-Acciari

Rielly-Spurgeon
Muzzin-Dermott
Rosen-Liljegren

Andersen
Sparks

Realistic? I don't know. But I like it.

If we trade Nylander, we need to get something great back. A second pairing defender on an expiring contract, a bottom six forward, and a late 1st is not that. In one years time, that trade would look awful.

Obviously, you only make that deal after you've talked to Hamonic's people, a) to see if Toronto is a fit (NTC) and b) agreed to some sort of an extension. Yes, blindly, this could be a bad deal. But, if you have an extension, it's a pretty good deal.
