I would not spend $3 mil in cap space on Simmonds at this stage in his career. 3 points in 20 games after being traded, and ended up being scratched. His game appears to be regressing to me. Simmonds of a few years ago... sure.

Cost controlled Dman who is generally regarded as the best to enter the league since Karlsson. A 50 point W/C who still is improving and adds depth to our C needs, if desired, or replaces Mitch on JT’s line and should benefit playing with Johnny T, as has every other winger who has played with him and who will be substantially cheaper to resign than Mitch. The dollars saved can be portioned to other needs.

Essentially, downgrade at both positions for a year or two (though not substantially) while having more money to use elsewhere, and betting that Dahlin becomes the best D in the league, as has been suspected he will.

(BTW, I love Morgan and Mitch, I just think it helps Buffalo become relevant again...playoffs after 8 years...and perhaps maintains the Leafs this year by offering greater balance while gambling on Dahlin becoming a threat for the Norris in a Lindstrom like way, cheers)

It's amazing that when players like Simmonds (and Lucic) fall, they fall hard. It's not that they become echoes of their former selves, it's that they can't play at all any longer. It would be pointless even at the league minimum.

I don't suspect the Leafs are looking to downgrade for a year or two at this point.

To Edmonton: Matthews, Nylander, Rielly, Liljegren and Moore
To Toronto: McDavid and Klefbom and some expiring dead salary (Sam Gagner and Brandon Manning)

Leafs wouldn't do that one either.
 
The Leafs solely have to clean up their cap by trading players that aren't needed any longer. Players like Marleau, Brown and Zaitsev being traded will go a long way in retooling this team to where it needs to be. All these ludicrous trades are never going to happen. Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Tavares, Reilly and Kadri are here to stay. They are not our issue.

Mine was just for fun, but I think there’s some merit, though as ACC1224 said: doubtful the Leafs would downgrade for a year or two.
