Forslund contract negotiations

So with Forslund likely gone, there’s something else to be considered.

Who will be the new kinetico spokesperson?

Kinetico: It Clenches Your Thirst

It’s the kiss of death. First Peters supports them and is forced out by TD. Then Forslund. So whoever we want off the team/organization should be the next spokesperson.

I agree with your overall point. As an addition, is this also not the way she's built her brand? There are plenty of women in the "math" or "hockey analysis" scene (Namita, Chayka, Shayna, Lukan to name a few), but isn't Sara just... not that? Her whole brand is decidedly not in that direction, it's about providing new and different angles to engage with the team, decidedly in the "human interest" direction. And frankly she's outstanding at it, a very good writer, and has been a massive part of the rejuvenation of people paying attention to this team around the league.

This whole thing feels very "oh so women can't know the sport or do analytics now, is that it?" No, that's not it, but providing new angles to engage with the Hurricanes players, coaches, and staff on a personal level is how you've carefully cultivated your following. Analytics and in-depth game analysis is not your slant and that's ok and frankly that seems like it was a conscious decision by you that's brought you a ton of success so maybe you were right to do so and are good at this? And if someone prefers a more analytical slant (something the Canes don't really have a dedicated presence for) that's ok and doesn't take away from the fact that you're good at what you do? Criticizing her for not being something she's not trying to be isn't fair, but probably a product of the Canes not having a single other relevant writer. Until we do get an analytics presence, she will probably continue to be criticized for not being all things to all people, and in many cases (not all) it's not coming from a sexist place but instead a "preference" place.

If the Canes had an analytics writer who was good, they probably wouldn't be writing...the team would snatch them up and meld them into the borg.

To make the issue even more confusing, she just "Liked" a tweet of mine responding to her. For fear of her Twitter army, I won't post it here, but I'm now left even more confused.

IDK what any of that goings-on last page was about, was not involved

What I will say about Sara's apparent reaction to criticism on Twitter is that Twitter is media-heavy and as such, can often feel like a safe haven for journalists/writers/bloggers etc. to vent about criticism. I've done it myself. It's incredibly difficult and mentally draining being a journalist (of any kind) in this current sociopolitical climate. Doubly so for women - I see this firsthand every day. If she has/had a chip on her shoulder about anything, I'm inclined to understand.

And without having too much idea of what any of it was actually about, I guess I'd just say consider the particular medium (whether message board, FB, Twitter, Reddit or what have you) and adjust expectations accordingly.

The cross pollination between formats bugs me sometimes though. Whats on Twitter should probably stay on Twitter, what's on 26 should stay on 26, and so on. But that's just me

Well, there was the previous debacle where someone apparently said that Sara should post the lines (or somesuch) as "that's literally her only job". I would guess that is some of the foundation that things got built on now.

Though, I learned of that one from her own Twitter. Now, in the face of latest developments, I would lie if I said that I don't have some open questions on that one. But, I don't know who is and who should be in charge of posting the lines at pre-game time to begin with. Maybe it's just thing that always has got done somehow out of some mutual understanding that it would be nice to know the lines.

But. It's the NHL, the best hockey players in the world playing the game. It would be kind of logical that the best hockey reporting would be happening here too. One of the teams probably got the McDavid of beat reporting, like we had the McDavid of pbp guys until we refused to pay him. So that would probably be the ceiling that a fan can expect in optimal conditions.

Obviously 30 other teams don't have McDavid as their 1C so in practice only one team can be at the ceiling. Some other team may have a "skate fast, pass good, don't shoot" guy as theirs who the fans still love a plenty but will occasionally call him out for not shooting ever which is a thing they kind of justifiably could expect to be somewhere in the job description of a 1C in the highest hockey league there is, especially if they see some other teams' guy do it so seemingly effortlessly. But obviously they all are individuals with their own quirks and you have to be generally happy with yours as long as he gets the job done and is somewhere in top-40ish in his position (because some utter f***ers like the Pens may have hogged two of the top ones).

Anyway, that's what I think of being a 1C in the NHL. I have never played in a team on any level myself though.

"There are some women in this forum": women :: "I have some black friends" : POC

No matter who is correct, it has to be acknowledged that this is a white-male echo chamber, and here exists a gigantic blind spot.

I will go on to assume that @Lempo @Lucky Lindy and @Incubajerks are also white. Well... I am. But I am pretty certain, we are dispersing your echo simply by being on the other side of Atlantic. Trust me, we're more different from you US guys than some of you would believe. Not to mention the differences between each of us just by the virtue of the recent European history.

I did not recognize this board at all from the highly stereotypic Hockey ManTM image which brush many in the twitter replies were eager to paint us with. And they did use the assumably plurar "them", not "he", though only one single post was quoted. It's hard to take it as nothing more than a general venting at the stereotypic Hockey Man, where many participants possibly didn't even know where and what individuals it technically was aimed at.

So, it becomes kind of funny that half the guys here switched for a jerk handle when the actual Traditional Hockey Culture in form of Don Cherry had at the Canes and their antics. Goddamnit, @garnetpalmetto was the one to come up with the name Storm Surge for it!

I'm so not going there but isn't this "you're the stereotypic stereotype!" shit what we as a society was supposed to move away from?

Also, @MrazeksVengeance , yes I'm white, as deemed by a Minnesota court in 1908 in U.S. vs John Svan. Per the judgement, our possible Mongol ancestry is distant and diluted. The prosecutor's claim that our Asiatic frame of mind was out of harmony with American thought didn't succeed.

The Twitter and it's limited character space is kind of planned from the get-go to be a cross pollination medium. As demostrated by the embedding option on this very forum that I don't think you even can turn off.

As a Sara defender, I'm a little disappointed that she chose to go to Twitter with this, when she could have just said "hey guys that's kinda bullshit" right here on the board. Feels like she got irritated and pulled the trigger a little quick. It's not like we're not frequently reading and dissecting her work here, and some of us paying for it. It's not like we don't know her work. We're not random internet antagonists. We're her fanbase.

I'm not saying she's wrong either. The "girls know marketing and boys know math" theme is a pervasive one, and it's wrong, and it's worth addressing. But like this? Are we part of the Canes family who can argue and maybe screw up once in a while, or are we content?

Not a big deal in the end, just a day in the life of Twitter. But a little disappointing.

I took offense with a statement of hers on twitter, where she stated that all white men were the same, in some offensive manner. I responded to her tweet with the dictionary definition of Racism...She immediately blocked me

I immediately cancelled Athletic subscription

She won't last, if she can't accept criticism of her sometimes moronic posts

That sounded harsh, but i followed her for her hockey access, supported her by subscribing, I certainly didn't follow her for childish attacks on race, sex.

It's incredibly difficult and mentally draining being a journalist (of any kind) in this current sociopolitical climate.

I am sometimes too much of a traditionalist. Journalists should challenge the status quo. The Athletic only does that from an analytics perspective. While Sara did give voice to John, the journalistic thing to do would have been to push Waddell on why they "aren't negotiating anything right now." She has had opportunities to ask pointed questions—and never really done it. Why did Dundon buy 61% of a team when every business school will tell you 50% +1 is a controlling interest? If the name is the CAROLINA Hurricanes, what is the value of having an AHL affiliate in the same state—if necessary what $ is worth moving the team? Even, when she writes about Hockey is For Everyone and the NHL promotes it, do the players who are open about their religious convictions support the efforts? While not a conspiracy theorist, a journalist realizes that the "real story" is about things that end up being conspiratorial (Watergate, clergy pedophilia, tobacco usage and cancer, the NFL and concussions).

I hope Sara reads this. She has the ability to be a good journalist, but to this point she has been a writer/commenter/blogger. The term journalist should be earned.
