Exactly. I don't think for one second that BB was insinuating she needed a man to explain numbers, but even if he had actually meant that... she has an account here. Ask him to explain himself, or simply clap back. He's right there, all it takes is tapping the keyboard.

There's a very deliberate method in screencapping the comment to Twitter and then posting a "response" where it won't be seen by BB, but will be seen by 50,000 random people who have no context for what was said. So a dedicated, very reasonable member of the fanbase gets mobbed because he had the gall to make a very normal criticism of someone who self-identifies as an influencer.

This is some toxic bullshit our community doesn't need.

This. And while I've enjoyed the coverage of the Canes and other content, this is making me reconsider my Athletic subscription.

Go back through the history of that meme thread with a critical eye and you'll see some stuff in pretty questionable taste, and people who aren't regulars here, if that's all they see of us, could develop some ideas. That's all I'm saying.
i don't read it because it is full of problematic "barstool" esque garbage that i dont want to read and dont find funny

I’m confused, why on earth wouldn’t she get info from Dom? Isn’t he an expert? She should be getting info from him as should any other beat writer of any race, creed, or gender.

That's where I'm a bit lost as well. He's the Athletics go-to guy for advanced statistics, she specifically mentions getting info from him in her articles all the time, but implying that she requests certain advanced statistics from him to support points made in her articles is sexist?

I have too. The Braves' writers are just awful. The Duke coverage is fairly limited to conjecture and opinions and that isnt my thing. ECU doesnt get any coverage. BUT, there is a lot of good stuff that comes out from not Braves, Duke, or Canes writers that are good.

The article about the Canes front office's first draft was good. The break down of Necas as a player was really good. The articles about the Braves' version of Bobby Bonilla was something I was unaware of and found fascinating. Other coverage of the drafts and other things are good. So, I am torn on the subscription.

I have no doubt that she is hypersensitive to stuff like that, especially given the torrent of truly ridiculous abuse to which she is subjected.

My problem isn't with the angle she took here. There's a shitload of implicit sexism in this world, and it's fair for her to read that comment and think "hey, I actually do a lot of analysis, wtf is that supposed to mean?"

That's the kind of argument that we have on this board all day, every day, and had she just come on the board and said "yeah that's some bullshit I do a lot of analysis, see here and here and here, and your take is shallow and bad" then I would have been 100% Team Sara while she dunked all over us for our dumbass bullshit. Because that's what we do here.

But that's not what she did. She took a quote out of context and held it up to Twitter for ridicule.

There's a reason we post this stuff *here* and not on *Twitter*. This is a place where we argue, we listen to each other, we go back and forth, we write novels, and at the end of the day we feel like we're all in it together.

Like, it's weird how much this bothers me. The cognitive dissonance is painful right now.

This is my biggest problem with this whole episode. I'm not sure I agree with her point on the sexism of the post she brought up, but I'm willing to be convinced if she wants to try and state her case. But to silently lurk in the background and then run to her megaphone somewhere else and yell "Behold the heathens!!!" is pretty shitty.

Stupid puns, topical and period relevant memes, boomer memes, Babylon bee, Lincoln joke. @sabremike calling out NBC on absolute BS, RTS references (WC3, AoE2), Masters of the Universe, some more stupid puns, show me the law, some more sabre edgy humor that is completely fine by European standards, us celebrating @Roboturner913 is back, @MinJaBen complaining about ads and @Lempo helping out, me sharing Conan YT videos, discussion about the ridiculousness of English language, annoyed Jack Nicholson, discussion about Liberty's looks.

I mean I could see people being offended with some sabre's posts, but being offended doesn't equal being right.
Loosely quoted Ricky Gervais.

Because overreacting is counterproductive for anyone who actually likes Canes?
Because you know that she has probably faced actual sexist comments, but this was not the case? Because having a discussion would be so much better here?

Furthermore, this does not help fight sexism at all. It just creates a rift, because it is a display of power. It doesn't change people's hearts.

To make the issue even more confusing, she just "Liked" a tweet of mine responding to her. For fear of her Twitter army, I won't post it here, but I'm now left even more confused.

She figured out it was you, realized she made a mistake and is letting you know that much.

I'd guess if she came by, told us what upset her and why, and gave us a chance to hug it out, without having to be exposed to Twitter, I'd like that.

Not that she's obligated to, or that she will. Maybe she shouldn't, even. I don't know.

Treat us like family, not like strangers, because that's how we'd treat you.

Eh, there’s some pretty political content in those “edgy” memes. I don’t care for it, but I also don’t frequent the thread enough to bother bringing it up. It’s easy to see how someone coming here for the first time could see that thread and think it’s “like that” around here, which it really is not except for that one thread.

I have said it on two separate occasions to Dave that I am proud that as far as my stay here goes, we have never needed "NO POLITICS" tag. So I would say we're definitely not like that.

Yeah, I apologize about that. Obviously, if I knew that Sara would take offense and decide to weaponize her followers (something she was called out for, acknowledged, and said she’d try to stop doing during the whole Aho drama), I’d have left your name out of it. It was simply easier at the time to simply mention your name, since the mobile site is an absolute nightmare on the phone.

I’m still not sure where this drama came from. Judging from the responses, it was the insinuation that she doesn’t do any research for her articles(?), which I don’t think I implied. I only mentioned the Dom comment since it’s something she’s done multiple times, and she herself even has said so in her Twitter responses. But it’s apparently a joke? One that flew over my head, I suppose.

I was simply saying that writers have strengths and weaknesses in their skill set, and IMO, trying to write about the analytical side of the game is one of hers. I was the exact opposite. When I wrote, I loved digging through the numbers to see if I could quantify the unquantifiable. In fact (way back before advanced statistics were “a thing” in hockey), my first article was a big piece trying to determine if we could identify “home ice advantage” through statistics and if so, who had the biggest advantage.

But ask me to write a human interest piece? I’d hate writing it, it’d show in the writing, which in turn made me hate having to associate my name on the published work. I wouldn’t promote those articles at all and simply pray they’d die a quick painless death. It’s extremely difficult to write when the passion isn’t there
You got what you deserved for agreeing with me. :D

Right. The thing that disappoints me is the feeling that she's punching down into her own fanbase with limited knowledge. Whether she's right or not, it feels unnecessary.

(Of course, then I look at some of the stuff on the meme thread and think "hmm, maybe we've got it coming")
Why didn’t she just hit the reply button and address the situation directly here with the poster instead of taking the route that she did? or via message to ask for clarification ?

As for the content here that may or not be occasionally be my cup of tea, that’s what the scroll and page down buttons are for from my perspective. There are plenty of real life causes to put that energy into outside a fun sports forum.
