It was a #20 pick, at that stage you can probably draft for needs as it's pretty much a crapshoot at that point.

Claude Giroux being drafted just two positions later stings though...

Boston had a hell of a draft that year... Kessel, Marchand and Lucic...
Gainey even stated they wanted to use that draft to build their RD pipeline. That’s simply the wrong approach to take IMO

Former Habs prospect LeGuerrier is signed to an AHL deal by Rockford Ice Hogs.

I believe there are three former Habs picks who they never signed that are now signed to AHL deals:

LeGuerrier: Ice Hogs
Houde: Penguins
Fonstad: Monsters

With the contract glut created in part by the curiously celebrated stockpiling of later picks MB has done the past few years, will be interesting to see if a player or two we walk away from early, because we've got no contract room, finds their way to be a late blooming quality NHL contributor elsewhere...

Still don't get the approach. Adding as many mid & late picks as we have, only to keep them, then let several walk when we can't sign them later despite them still being AHL caliber, seems silly. Why not package them at the draft to move up, rather than continuing to do the opposite so frequently :dunno:

I would had kept LeGuerrier. Big, right-handed d-man.

With 21 picks in rounds 4-7 over the past 4 years (5 more than just using our own picks), the glut of prospects means lots of guys who won't get a legit shot to make it with us, making the internal scouting/development work even more crucial... neither are areas we seem particularly strong at.

I never understood Bergevin's strategy of piling up and trading down picks to get these mid-rounders. He should had packaged these mid-rounders to pick better in the first three rounds instead. Smith, Biondi, Pitlick are next in line to be dumped.

Let's wait for them to show they actually are AHL caliber before calling it silly.

Waiting assets is always silly. I wouldn't expect many late round picks to stick, even in the ahl, that's not the point... draft picks are assets that shouldn't be wasted unnecessarily.

It's only 6 weeks into the season over there but color me shocked when I saw that Audette is 2nd in the KHL in goals, 1 back from the league leader and 3rd in the league in points. He killed it last year in Liiga, now the KHL, did not see that coming, was never a big fan of when he was with us.

Ikonen is 2nd on his team in assists, 3rd in points. He's got 9 pts in 11 games, he had 5 pts in 23 games last year. In his career he has 29 pts in 88 games. He's still only 22 and will be all year.
