Player Discussion: Former Bolts Thread

This seems to be turning into the bash former players thread. Serge is playing 26 min a night on a worse team and has 20 points in 28 games, currently 6th on his team in plus/minus (+5), so it's not like plays like this are happening every night. He's definitely taken strides forward from his last year here.

Half of this is because we want to hope the team was right to move on from these players (admittedly, most of these were forced due to cap restrictions) and that we aren't missing out on anything in their absences.

The other half of this is that most of those key role players from the Cup winning teams have, in fact, been subpar at best and downright bad at worst since moving on. Stamkos is making $8M and he's sitting on 1+3 at even strength in 29 games (his full season numbers last year were 21+21). Of course we all love the guy and everything, but there's no sugarcoating that those numbers are utterly putrid, he's truly an $8M power play specialist. At last check, Pally and Killer aren't exactly showing great stats for their salaries either. It's basically Sergachev and Colton who are looking good, but maybe Sergy is one of those guys who needed a change of scenery to grow. It didn't feel like he was improving here, it felt like he'd hit his ceiling and it wasn't enough for the contract he has.

Why bash former players when you can bash the Sabres?

Because bashing the weak and helpless is traditionally frowned upon in society.

When he was here, I was of the opinion that Serg’s play with the puck is often lackadaisical and he is prone to boneheaded plays— that opinion is further reinforced by his recent play.
Serg with the puck on his stick looks as if he is out on the pond with the boys, fooling around—an apparent inability to be reliable. If he were to try some these high risk plays when the game was clearly out of reach in a meaningless preseason game— fine, yet he coughs up the puck at the absolute worst moments, with 0 need for these asinine plays, repeatedly— a terrible attribute for your top two dman, in my (unchanged) opinion.

My reply about Serge's performance this year was responding to the "Serge doing Serge things" post where he made a reckless play on the blueline, but I didn't actually use the reply feature and my response was taken more generally than I meant.

Even when Sergachev is on another team we can't acknowledge the mistakes he makes or talk about them. It's lunacy at this point

I'm for acknowledging his whole game, the good and the bad. He's obviously still making reckless plays, but he's a +5 on a team with a -1 differential, and playing #1 minutes, so I can only conclude he's doing "Serge things" less than he used to, while still posting good offensive numbers as well. I'll be sad that we didn't keep him if he does continue to develop into a true #1 d-man, but I'll also be happy for him.

Regarding Stamkos, I was in favor of trading him due to the cap. I think Nashville grossly overpaid, but I'm still rooting for him to still have some respectable offensive seasons. He's currently only 1 point behind Marchessault, but unfortunately, he makes 2 mil more per year.

i stopped caring at all what other people on this board think and just this morning i awoke crying because this life is so beautiful

Don't forget the revolving door bottom six.

Sergachev was never going to justify that contract without PP1 minutes. And those are hard to come by behind Hedman. Even at 34.

People try to justify their horrific takes. The previous page actually made me laugh out loud, those trying to discredit Sergachev. Just pitiful.

One thing that I’ve learned about this board is that there’s multiple things to enjoy about hockey. On the one hand you have sick shit like kuch making dope ass passes, different defenseman making booming clappers, point going around all fast and zipping around like a zipping thing and deking guys asses off, one dude beaking off at another cat, guys punching each other, blowing up the goalie and he might be dead, etc., and on the other hand you have posters here that are watching other teams feeds like theyre on the spectrum trying to find highlights of them making mistake and compulsively posting them here and just awaiting the likes.

and both are equally important to our enjoyment of the game.

Tweets are calling him Ticker. No longer going by 'Tik', I guess. Too funny of a nickname to have around Swedes.

Remember those guys who insisted Sergachev wasnt getting traded and it made sense to keep him?

Mean when JBB said he wasn't being traded? What am I missing?

He didn't, you guys took that well out of context. He simply stated what the top-4 would look like next season barring any roster changes when asked by a reporter. He never said "Sergachev was not going to be traded." You guys took that as he cemented his top 4 and nobody was getting traded lmao, it was kinda silly actually.

Here's what he did say a week after the season ended though, which actually fits with how he's been running things:
"Mr. BriseBois left himself open to that possibility when asked about it in the press conference. After comparing rosters to puzzles with constantly shifting parameters, he acknowledged that “nothing is off the table”. So he is open to the idea of moving a contract off of the team if he needs to."

Sorry, that was a drunk reply, I usually try to be a little more nuanced.

It was not out of context. You are right, he did not explicitly say he was not being traded like I said, but it could be deduced with logic. You cannot have a top 4 with Sergachev if he’s traded.

The vast majority of people who said Sergachev probably wouldn’t be traded were also throwing in the caveat that JBB can simply change his mind. It made too much sense at the time to trade him that it wasn’t a question of should he be traded.

Honestly, I thought Sergachev HAD TO BE traded after McDonagh was brought back, and I also took JBB's comment to mean it wasn't going to happen. For a week or whatever I had no idea what the plan was. Then he traded Sergachev and it felt clear that that had been the plan all along.

The Sergachev trade was so big and perfect (on both sides) that I'm guessing JBB might even have had the framework worked out before he pulled the trigger on Mcadonagh.

It was also suprising he would move on from someone 2 days before their NTC and 7 years out of a 8 year deal kicks in. But then less than a week later he let the Captain walk and we recalibrated our standards of what to expect from JBB.

I think he had the framework worked out by the time of the Hanifin talks.
