Player Discussion: Former Bolts Thread

This seems to be turning into the bash former players thread. Serge is playing 26 min a night on a worse team and has 20 points in 28 games, currently 6th on his team in plus/minus (+5), so it's not like plays like this are happening every night. He's definitely taken strides forward from his last year here.

Half of this is because we want to hope the team was right to move on from these players (admittedly, most of these were forced due to cap restrictions) and that we aren't missing out on anything in their absences.

The other half of this is that most of those key role players from the Cup winning teams have, in fact, been subpar at best and downright bad at worst since moving on. Stamkos is making $8M and he's sitting on 1+3 at even strength in 29 games (his full season numbers last year were 21+21). Of course we all love the guy and everything, but there's no sugarcoating that those numbers are utterly putrid, he's truly an $8M power play specialist. At last check, Pally and Killer aren't exactly showing great stats for their salaries either. It's basically Sergachev and Colton who are looking good, but maybe Sergy is one of those guys who needed a change of scenery to grow. It didn't feel like he was improving here, it felt like he'd hit his ceiling and it wasn't enough for the contract he has.

Why bash former players when you can bash the Sabres?

Because bashing the weak and helpless is traditionally frowned upon in society.

When he was here, I was of the opinion that Serg’s play with the puck is often lackadaisical and he is prone to boneheaded plays— that opinion is further reinforced by his recent play.
Serg with the puck on his stick looks as if he is out on the pond with the boys, fooling around—an apparent inability to be reliable. If he were to try some these high risk plays when the game was clearly out of reach in a meaningless preseason game— fine, yet he coughs up the puck at the absolute worst moments, with 0 need for these asinine plays, repeatedly— a terrible attribute for your top two dman, in my (unchanged) opinion.

My reply about Serge's performance this year was responding to the "Serge doing Serge things" post where he made a reckless play on the blueline, but I didn't actually use the reply feature and my response was taken more generally than I meant.

Even when Sergachev is on another team we can't acknowledge the mistakes he makes or talk about them. It's lunacy at this point

I'm for acknowledging his whole game, the good and the bad. He's obviously still making reckless plays, but he's a +5 on a team with a -1 differential, and playing #1 minutes, so I can only conclude he's doing "Serge things" less than he used to, while still posting good offensive numbers as well. I'll be sad that we didn't keep him if he does continue to develop into a true #1 d-man, but I'll also be happy for him.

Regarding Stamkos, I was in favor of trading him due to the cap. I think Nashville grossly overpaid, but I'm still rooting for him to still have some respectable offensive seasons. He's currently only 1 point behind Marchessault, but unfortunately, he makes 2 mil more per year.
